Body Image
"Just Be" is a familiar slogan to the current American culture. It is the slogan of a well-known designer, Calvin Klein, who, in his advertisements, supposedly promotes individuality and uniqueness. Yet, Calvin Klein, along with all known designers, does not have overweight or unattractive people on his billboard ads, on his runways, in his magazine pictures or on his television commercials. Moreover, the movie, music and the mass media corroborate with the fashion industry in setting and advertising a certain standards for a physical ideal of a human body. Such propaganda promotes the public into depriving themselves of needed nutrition and generates eating disorders within people in order to fit the set standard of the physical ideal.
The negative attitude towards overweight population of the modern society is a sociocultural phenomenon. Yet, historically the negativity towards excess in weight was not constant. If one examines the artwork as relatively recent as the works of the Renaissance period, it can be witnessed that women who were somewhat "chunky," were considered beautiful and they were painted and sculpted. "Fleshy" men and women are in the masterpieces of such artist as Michelangelo, de Vinci, Rafael, Goya y Lucientes and etc. Love handles, fat deposits and skin folds were regarded as attractive and were applauded. Cleopatra, for example, was praised for her beauty, yet by modern standards she would be considered overweight. Aphrodite, the goddess of love and the image of perfection, is also viewed as overweight and thickset in the contemporary society and would not be painted or sculpted as "heavy set" as she has been created previously. may be observed that during that time frame, as well as during most of the historic periods, the full figured body was preached as normal and ideal and was, though not as intensely and as high-tech, commercialized to the public and society.

Moe also discussed the emergence of the mass media which confronted people with many “ideal” bodies to look at and quickly, body image became a widespread obsession. The book did a great job of going into depth on how television and movies and magazines and newspapers are powerful promoters of the “be thin” message.

Throughout time, the most controversial subject among female’s health has been body image. Society and our culture molds females’s brains into believing that being thin is what will fulfill complete happiness. Being thin means you are more successful, loved, attractive, and overall truly beautiful. Thin women are seen as having an altogether perfect life. However, there is another female figure that is seen as undesirable, hopeless, mainly disliked by most. This type of woman is the curvy or larger female. If one were to go out on the street and gather a group of men and women and show them the thin vs. large female and which one is more attractive, most would say the thinner is. Thus, we deny the larger women because they do not fit societies norms. Thin women are timid to turn into this other that is not widely accepted. To this extent, society and our culture have constructed a monster.
I was recently leafing through the pages of the 2002 Sport’s Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and within a matter of five minutes, I was majorly downing my body and my looks. I couldn’t help but compare my body to that of a woman who is 5’10” and weighs 105 pounds, when the average female is 5’6” and weighs 140 pounds. It’s no wonder there are so many cases of anorexia and bulimia when a model, comparable to the stick figures drawn by kindergartener's everywhere, is yet another symbol of what is considered to be beautiful.
At no time in history have women been so pressured to be thin. Inner beauty and personality is no longer enough. Women all over the world look at themselves and can only find imperfections. Media constantly shows thin, youthful, and “perfect” women, whom in reality have just as many imperfections as the average woman. Body image in the media tends to be a controversial topic on whether or not it has a negative effect on women in today’s society. “. . . this obsession has contributed to an increase in eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression among women in the United States” (Point: Body Image In The Media Is An Unhealthy Picture). What the public sees as beautiful has constantly changed over the decades. These changes have transformed the messages of the media to “you must be this size or you are not beautiful.” Many women have spent and wasted their lives with diets and starvation in order to reach the standards the media sets. A controversy has evolved from the question as to whether media is the real cause of these problems. Women now see themselves in a negative light due to the change in what is seen as beautiful in society and a constant use of airbrushing in advertisements. This has resulted in an increase in eating disorders and self esteem issues.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Marilyn Monroe was iconic for the ideal ‘body perfect’ image. Ranging from a size 10 to 18, with the curvy body everyone fantasied of having. Gawking, awing, and oohing emphasized not only words affected the ‘body perfect’ image, but peoples’ actions did. When did this body image become ‘fat’? In today’s society Marilyn Monroe is consider ‘fat’, how she can go from the iconic ideal body, to an overweight ‘ugly’ woman (Blackwell, 2000). In today’s studies, the ideal ‘body perfect’ image, is ranging from a size 0 to 2, standing at 5’8 feet weighing 110-115 pounds, resembling the looks of a child’s toy called the Barbie (Dittmar 2009, 2). “In the mass media shape and weight define perfection. Women perceive themselves as being bigger than they actually are.” (Blackwell 2000, 367). Placing this as our ideal ‘body perfect’ image, is destroying young adults’ preference of what is beautiful. If you do not look this way, you are ugly, but why do we allow this. Today’s social media portray such an image, destroying a real body image of a real woman. In the past few decades, social media has overtaken what a young adult believes is the ideal ‘body perfect’ image, leaving them in despair to look that way. According to Dittmar (2009) and Sohn (2009) one’s image link negative consequences due to social media. Negative consequences range from eating disorders, low self-esteem, depression, and low self-worth. Do stereotypes of body images exist? “A "stereotype" is a generalization about a person or group of persons. Our society often innocently creates and perpetuates stereotypes, but these stereotypes often lead to unfair discrimination and persecution when the stereotype is unfavorable” (Grobman). It is hard to understand how much the media affects us unless one stands back and evaluates things such as commercials, magazines, and television shows. Women today follow the stereotypical images of beauty that the media portrays. These images of beauty deal with women’s physical appearance on the outside. The unbearable pressure from the media causes women to look a certain way so they are accepted into society. Over the past two centuries, women in this world have strived to reach the stereotypical beauty that the media presents. There are many arguments for the certain ways the media illustrates negative body images. Throughout the years, magazines, movies, billboards, and television shows have made woman’s body images worse. I am going to explain the stereotypes of body image and the difference between them in the mid 1800’s and today. I chose these two times periods to compare because they are complete opposites. I feel that by showing the difference over three hundred years allows one to see how weight and beauty has fluctuated. Body Image has become a very important part of our society and what creates our view of it can come from anywhere. It is difficult to pin point what can exactly shape a person’s view on body image because bodies are everywhere. In certain time periods, one’s body image can be influenced by different things. In the Victorian Age status influenced women to be skinny, while currently advertisements and the professional world influence people to achieve the “ideal” body. However, nothing is more influential than what a person goes through during their everyday life. Even though status, advertisements, and the professional world help shape a persons view of their own body image, the strongest pressure comes from our own personal experiences.
