Look around at your peers in the school. How many of them wish they were dead? When 13.7% of males and 30.1% of females in 10th grade say they seriously consider committing suicide, we need think about what is wrong. What makes these 15 and 16 year olds that have so much of their life left to live want to die? 14% of teens said they tried to kill themselves. That’s like having 3 people in our class who have tried to commit suicide. The pressures of life at our age are difficult but they’re not so difficult that 4,135 teenagers a year should be killing themselves. The rate of teenage suicide has tripled since 1950, but why?
Is it because movies and video games have become more violent? Is it because they make death seem to be heroic, romantic, and glamorous? A 16-year-old boy who attempted suicide because of teasing at school said that before he tried to commit suicide he imagined his funeral with all the people who teased him feeling horrible about what they had done. He didn’t seem to think that when he died it would be over. All he cared about was that dieing would just get him revenge. So is it because teenagers are less realistic about death that caused the suicide rate to triple?

Kohli and Solórzano’s theory of racial microaggression is described as subtle daily verbal and non-verbal racial insults that are often carried out automatically or unconsciously. People of color are usually targeted through layers based on their language, culture, and phenotype, and Eurocentric cultural values through the act of microaggressions often replace these layers. The authors argued that these microaggressions, although said unconsciously or subtly, the consequences of an individual’s experiences can have a detrimental impact on their well-being and self-perceptions (Kholi & Solórzano, 2012).
This suggests that life has nothing to do with race, gender, class, or sexual orientation. They may exist however, they do not play a role in how he or she is evaluated. Each person has a chance at their own true potential as they all start out equal and have the ability to create their own opportunities (261). This myth implies that the opportunities that are presented were created solely by their own potential. One can simply say if they didn’t succeed they didn’t try hard enough. Alger goes on to say, that being committed to merit-based decision making and the existence of standards to measure merit must not unfairly favor one person over another (262-263). However, the standards must come from somewhere or be decided by somebody. Alger’s myths suggest that the pecking order is maintained, to overlook the racial barriers that are so prevalent in American society (264). My knowledge of microaggressions prior to research was limited. Before discussing the topic in class, I had never even heard the term microaggression. As of now, all I know is what I learned in class; that microaggressions are snide, racist comments that are made repeatedly. Due to my limited knowledge, I decided this would be an interesting topic to explore and read about. Through all of my research, my goal is to learn more about the effects and different types of people that experience microaggressions.
Microaggressions are committed constantly, among numerous people without them realizing it. I must say I am completely guilty of also playing part in this act. These acts are done constantly and no one understands the affects it has on people. Miller and Garran (2008) states, “Racial microaggressions are similar to aversive racism. They are “subtle, stunning, often automatic,” verbal and nonverbal putdowns and social assaults that wound people of color unbeknownst to the perpetrator” (p.97). This is what produces pain and anger inside countless of people. Many individuals need professional help in order to surpass the neglect they have been summited to.
They believe that students union or groups are using this expression to pursue success in their movements. There might be some evidences that can prove this theory, but there are more evidences that indicate the harm of microaggression to international students on campus. Referring to Tafarodi’s study (2014), they initially interview 129 international students in a Canadian university and all of them indicate that they have experienced or felt some extent of racial microaggression. Hence, racial microaggression is not an exceptional case; instead, racial microaggression is fully filled within educational institutions. People should recognized this situation first and then they can firmly face this problem.
Microaggression refers to “brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward people of color” (Sue et al., 2007). Microaggression has appeared in three forms: microassault, microinsult, and microinvalidation. Microassault is characterized by verbal and nonverbal attacks meant to hurt the victim. An example of this is when a white teacher fails to acknowledge a student of color in a classroom or ignore eye contact. Microinvalidations excludes the feelings and thoughts of a person of color. These hidden insults have been a part of academic discourse for some time, however, the murder of Mike Brown became an example of the racialization. The portrayal in the media due to this event highlights the daily encounters of microaggression people face that is not reached by the mass consciousness. Today, these insults continue to degrade anyone who does not fit into the dominant culture since racism is embedded in the fabrication of society. This includes asking an Asian American “where are you from”, “where were you born?” and “You speak good English,” even though they were born and raised in the United States. This invalidates their American heritage and portrays the idea that they are foreigners. Ironically, the daily common experience of racial aggression may have “significantly more influence on racial anger, frustration, and self-esteem than traditional overt forms of racism.” (SoIorzano, Ceja, & Yosso, 2000). Racist and racism are provocative words in American society. To some, they become curse words. They are descriptive words of reality that cannot be denied. Some people believe that race is the primary determinant of human abilities and capacities and behave as if racial differences produce inherent superiorities. People of color are often injured by these judgements and actions whether they are directly or indirectly racist. Just as individuals can act in racist ways, so can institutions. Institutions can be overtly or inherently racist. Institutions can also injure people. The outcome is nonetheless racist, if not intentional (Randall).
Teenage years are the hardest times. Your having changes in your body, going through relationships, and trying to plan your future. When you go to look for answers, it seems like no one has them. That's what starts teenagers to feel alone. When they feel this way they will try to "medicate" themselves by drugs and alcohol or violence. Studies show that teens who feel this way are at high risk for suicide. Suicide, intentional, self-inflicted death. A uniquely human act, suicide occurs in all cultures. People who attempt or complete suicide usually suffer from extreme emotional pain and distress and feel unable to cope with their problems. They are likely to suffer from mental illness, particularly severe depression, and to feel hopeless about the future. Suicide is becoming a public-health problem. It is now the leading cause of death worldwide. Researchers believe mental illness in young people are the cause of the increase in suicide. Not only do suicides rates differ between age groups but also men and women. Men succeed in more suicides but more women attempt. Methods of suicide can differ from drug overdose to hanging. Poisoning or overdose is the least amount of suicide rates. Hanging is the leading method worldwide. The United States has 60 percent suicides committed by guns. Where it is less easy to get a gun in Canada there is only 30 percent committed suicides. Only 15 to 25 percent of those who kill themselves leave suicide notes. People often think suicide is caused by difficult situations such as failure in school or marriage. Experts believe those are just triggers and its really caused by the brain, genetics or social forces. The majority of people who kill themselves are suffering from depression. Researchers believe that genetics play a role in suicidal behavior. They believe it runs in the family. There are also some psychological theories. "Suicides have three interrelated and unconscious dimensions: revenge/hate, depression/hopelessness, and guilt." said Karl Menninger. Many suicide attempts are a cry for help and to try to get attention. Soem socialogical theories show suicidal people don't know how to cope with stress well. They are also probably suffering from a loss of a family member. There are ways to help prevent suicide. If recongized early you can get psychiatric help and get on medication. Some risk factors can be people with mental illnesses, or substance-abuse disorders.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death in teens. Most teens commit suicide mainly because of bullying which pushes teens over the edge; because they believe what their peers say about them. Studies show that more teens are dying in this generation than any other generation due to suicide. Bullying is the biggest cause of teen suicide because it pushes people to believe that it is the only way out, makes people feel worthless, and causes the most mental problems in teens.
Sex denotes to the bodily and birth features of men and women. Sex is the categorization of people into male and female groups based in biological characteristics. While gender is the cultural or social interpretation of sex; putting people into male behavioral and female expectations groups based on association with biological being a socially characteristics appropriate man or woman. Now the eighth-leading cause of death overall in the U.S. and the third-leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years, suicide has become the subject of much recent focus. U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, for instance, recently announced his Call to Action to Prevent Suicide, 1999, an initiative intended to increase public awareness, promote intervention strategies, and enhance research. The media, too, has been paying very close attention to the subject of suicide, writing articles and books and running news stories. Suicide among our nation’s youth, a population very vulnerable to self-destructive emotions, has perhaps received the most discussion of late. Maybe this is because teenage suicide seems the most tragic—lives lost before they’ve even started. Yet, while all of this recent focus is good, it’s only the beginning. We cannot continue to lose so many lives unnecessarily.
