The French Fur Trade
Beginning in the mid sixteenth century, French explorers were able to establish a powerful and lasting presence in what is now the Northern United States and Canada. The explorers placed much emphasis on searching and colonizing the area surrounding the St. Lawrence River “which gave access to the Great Lakes and the heart of the continent”(Microsoft p?). They began exploring the area around 1540 and had early interactions with many of the Natives, which made communication easier for both peoples when the French returned nearly fifty years later. The French brought a new European desire for fur with them to America when they returned and began to trade with the Indians for furs in order to supply the European demands. The Natives and the French were required to interact with each other in order to make these trades possible, and, over time, the two groups developed a lasting alliance. However, the French began to face strong competition in the fur trading industry, which caused many problems between different European nations and different native tribes. Therefore, the trading of fur allowed early seven- teenth century French explorers to establish peaceful relations with the Natives, however, com- petitive trading also incited much quarreling between competing colonies and Indian tribes.

In the state of Arizona, teenagers that are 15 years and six months can apply for their learner’s permit. A written driving test of basic driving laws and rules is then taken. Upon passing the new driver is given six months to drive a minimum of 30 daytime hours and 10 nighttime hours, with a licensed driver present. This allows teens to become comfortable driving alongside a licensed driver before taking on the task of driving alone. As a result of the Columbian Exchange, the interactions between the Europeans and the native indigenous peoples of North America became, in most cases, increasingly tense and hostile as the effects of the exchange took its toll. At first, the introduction of the New World to the Old, and vice versa, was a mingling that proved positive to both groups, but as the Europeans grew increasingly dependent and even greedy of the New World, the natives became increasingly defensive of their home. This led to a shaky relationship throughout the Americas of the natives and the Europeans.
The French and the Spanish both had a great impact on the Native Americans hundreds of years ago. The Spanish arrived at Alta California where they planned to establish 21 missions along the coast from San Diego to Santa Rosa. Their main goal was to convert Native Californians into Catholic peasants. On the other hand, the French were eager to colonize the northern country. The French wanted the beavers’ valuable fur, but the Indians were much better at hunting them down than they were at it. This worked out well, since it gave the Indians something to trade with the settlers who desired the beaver fur. In the two articles, one entitled Franciscan Missions in Alta California, by Kent G. Lightfoot, and the other entitled The Fur Trade and New France to 1676 (Prologue), by Claiborne A. Skinner, each author is able to describe what life was like in these missions/ports during this time period.
They wanted primarily to bring in more furs, namely beaver pelt (Goldfield, 31). This had become a popular commodity and the French jumped on the opportunity to take advantage of this demand. They were also more peaceful in many ways, befriending the Natives and working alongside them instead of overtaking them like the Spanish did (Goldfield, 32). That may have also been due to the fact that the Indians outnumbered the French colonists (Goldfield, 61), however, it still stands to show a peaceful co-existence is much more efficient than a bloody and violent one.
The colonial-era fur trade was a major component of the economy of early America and its overall development. North American Pelts and hides were in high demand and extremely valuable in Europe, where wearing fur provided warmth and social prestige. And for the Native Americans the use of European weapons, utensils, materials and other goods in exchange for furs were of great value as well. Cultural exchanges were increased and produced offspring used as intermediaries for networking and trade. Although fairly equal in societal benefit’s for both Native Americans and Europeans in the beginning, the Colonial American would later become the dominate society because of the fur trades.
During the early beginnings of the Colonial period in the United States, the original inhabitants, the Native Americans had to deal with many invaders from Europe. Of all the Native American tribes, the Iroquois and Huron had the most interaction with the Europeans. The Spanish, English, and French were some of the few countries that worked with the Native Americans the most. Each country had their own methods of dealing with the Native Americans when it came to interaction or methods for trading and obtaining of goods. Of those three nations the French was the one nation that appeared to not take full advantage of the Huron and Iroquois.
Yossarian can be seen as an anti-hero. Many of his actions could be considered immoral or cowardly. For example, in the hospital, he forged and tampered with letters he censored. Whenever he was overwhelmed by the horrors of war and by memories of his friends' deaths, he created symptoms that got him admitted to hospitals. He also made repeated attempts to be judged as certifiably insane so that he could be discharged. In the end, Yossarian deserted the Army and fled to Sweden, the only place he knew to be safe and sane.
