Blindly Jumping into War
Mike Thompson is a political cartoonist for The Detroit Free Press and is one example of an American expressing his viewpoint about the oncoming war with Iraq. Thompson tries to appeal to anyone who takes time to read the paper, and presumably, his intent is to introduce a new viewpoint to those supportive of the war. In Thompson's political cartoon published, February 26, 2003, he uses a well-known American symbol, Uncle Sam, to comment on current events. By paying close attention to the symbolism and other details in the cartoon, I want to show that Thompson critiques the actions of President Bush, who according to the image, seems to be jumping blindly into a war with Iraq and who will pull an unconvinced country with him.
The cartoon shows President Bush jumping from a warplane, which I interpret as the artists intention to signify the reality that President Bush is "jumping into war". Tied to his ankle is a rope that wraps around a figure that resembles the well-known image of "Uncle Sam", who still standing in the plane, symbolizes America and its founding father values such as equality, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. However, in this picture Thompson has drawn Uncle Sam's face showing a frowned mouth and an unpleasant expression, which implies that he is being forced to do something that is against his American values. I believe this stresses Thompson's argument that by rushing into a war that is unjustified it is also un-American. The expression on Uncle Sam's face is not the only reason, which Thompson suggests, for Uncle Sam not leaving the plane. By drawing the rope as hardly hanging on to Bush's foot and being tightly wrapped around the figure of Uncle Sam, Thompson argues...

...think he wants to gain support from those who agree with his opinion and try to enlighten those who are supportive of the war on Iraq about the ignorance of their President and how some of the country feels about this war.
I agree with Thompson's portrayal of the current situation because I felt he illustrated the fact that not all of America stands behind the President and his decision to start a war with Iraq. I believe this idea is shown by the use of a dejected Uncle Sam tied up by rope, which signifies that the President has control despite Uncle Sams viewpoint of the war. The exaggerated features given to the President can be interpreted as anything but noble and intelligent, but simply implies that he is rather naive and somewhat reckless.

In “response to executive order 9066” by Dwight Okia there are a lot of metaphors and analogy’s some of these metaphors are “I gave her a packet of tomato seeds and asked her to plant them for me, told her when the first tomato ripened she’d miss me.” This a metaphor for her friend basically rejecting her friend ship cause of a misconceived notion. as you can see from this excerpt “you’re trying to start a war,” she said, “giving secret away to the enemy, why can’t you keep your big mouth shut?” Her friend thinks since her family is not from this country she is not like them and she is the problem. But this was her family’s decision her father knew it would be hard for them to be able to become a part of this nation as you can see from this “I’ve packed my galoshes and thee
He used a very selective vocabulary, purposely using emotionally charged words such as: “wholly unjustifiable and irresponsible defiance” (lines 4-5), “ruthless disregard” (line 82), and “restraint and sacrifice” (lines 14-15). By using words with strong connotation, he powers the emotions of his audience once again directing support for himself and appearing as the calm figurehead amongst the emotional chaos. He also makes his speech very personal by mentioning individual American families, literally using the phrase “every American family” (line 25). He appeals to the strong sense of patriotism in the American public by mentioning the four servicemen who died in Vietnam. Despite the fact that they are almost completely unrelated to the rise in steel prices and, if they were alive, would be unaffected by the rise in price, either. And yet, Kennedy mentions the servicemen to make the situation appear that much more dire. By mentioning the tragic deaths of these men, Kennedy aims to trigger a strong emotional response in his audience that would turn into support for
Conflicts between people often have multiple causes and effects. A majority of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an argument that dates back to Biblical times. The Jewish argue Palestine was the historical site of all Jewish kingdoms, which was promised to Abraham and his descendants. The Arabs argue that Ishmael, forefather of Arabs, is the son of Abraham so God’s promise that the land should go to Abraham’s descendents includes Arabs as well . Some of the main causes which worsen the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are the disparity between Sykes-Picot agreement and Balfour Declaration, The United Nation Partition plan of 1947, which was the separation of the boundaries, and Hitler’s Final Solution. While these causes affected both sides
In conclusion, the main point of The Green Berets was to convince its audience the Vietnam War was essential; conversely, the Ugly American attempted to berate it. However, it is also clear that both had a common goal; one that expressed the cruelty war can have. John Wayne’s defeat-all-communists approach was becoming a less popular opinion by the time the movie was released. Instead, the ideals The Ugly American conveyed were the most popular. Unless these two styles of thinking are reconciled, the countries of the world are destined to be trapped in a prolonged war.
The author used many rhetorical devices such as personification, metonymy, asyndeton in order to describe how amazing Ronald Reagan was and how much change he had created for the people of the U.S. and the world. The author used personification when describing what Reagan had wanted to do to improve America. The author shows this by stating, “He sought to mend America’s wounded spirit, to restore the strength of the free world, and to free the slaves of communism.” This personifies America, the free world, and communism. This helps the reader get a much clearer visual representation by making it seem as if these are people he is changing and fixing for the better.Personification is not the only rhetorical device the author had used. He also
This photograph serves as an effective piece of rhetoric. It responds to the death of President Kennedy in a way that allows individual viewers to eulogize the fallen and perhaps find closure. It also provides a tribute to the president in a way that’s not too heavy handed or obvious.
Ultimately despite their best intentions, the British had set themselves up for an inevitable failure by making opposing arrangements that could not be satisfied simultaneously. Hence, the British were doomed by their own ambivalence. The British promises based off a strategy of short-term military and political gains only led to disappointment on both sides, increasing tensions between the opposing parties. However, we must remember that the United States, Zionist terrorist groups, economic issues, and the United Nations all contributed to preventing Britain from fulfilling its promises and mending the conflict. These factors however only accelerated and confirmed the inevitable outcome of an Arab-Israeli war, which was spurred on due to tension created by Britain’s contradictory promises.
In September 14, 1990, an operation, which is called gene therapy, was performed successfully at the National Institutes of Health in the United States. The operation was only a temporary success because many problems have emerged since then. Gene therapy is a remedy that introduces genes to target cells and replaces defective genes in order to cure the diseases which cannot be cured by traditional medicines. Although gene therapy gives someone who is born with a genetic disease or who suffers cancer a permanent chance of being cured, it is high-risk and sometimes unethical because the failure rate is extremely high and issues like how “good” and “bad” uses of gene therapy can be distinguished still haven’t been answered satisfactorily.
The documentary Waiting for Superman, directed by Davis Guggenheim, examines public education in the United States, and highlights educators who strived for education reform. The film focused on DC, New York and Los Angeles Public Schools, and the struggle for parents to find the right school for their child in these school districts. The film also shared alarming statistical data on the U.S math and reading scores, the difference between public and charter schools and the cost of sending a child to private school versus the cost of an inmate in jail. Also, the film presents the issue of horrible teachers who have tenure. Waiting for Superman gives a face to public education in the U.S, and discusses the issues and possible solutions in closing the achievement gap of rich and poor students.
The Arab-Israeli conflict is perhaps the most complex political issue of our time. Many have resorted to simply blaming one side or the other. If people took the time to understand the history and correct the misconceptions a potential path forward for the Palestinians comes in place. The main reason as to why the conflict continues is because both Palestinians and Israelis have been fighting over land for the past 66 years.
...cter of an American in order to show the imperceptiveness of Americans towards an unfamiliar culture on the opposite side of the planet and the senselessness of the intervention in general. The character of the young American Alden Pyle is naïve and convinced in the rightness of his deeds, even though he actually brings on a tragedy. His innocence poses a problem in that his good intentions informed by the simplistic belief that the world can be fixed and things set right only succeeds in killing people. On the war grounds, the only matter of significance is survival, not idealization. It is about fighting to live and being in control on the battlefield. Hence, in this story, innocence is simply a very dangerous thing to hold on to. In the end, Fowler blames innocence alone for the demise of Pyle, and he speaks of innocence as if it were a curse, and not a strength.
Gene therapy enables patients to survive incurable diseases. In the field of genetic diseases, ADA-SCID, CGD and hemophilia are three main ones. ADA-SCID is known as the bubble boy disease. CGD is related to immune system that would lead to fungal infections which are fatal. Patients with Hemophilia are not able to induce bold bleeding (Gene therapy for diseases, 2011). Gene therapy also has good effects on cancer treatment and neurodegenerative diseases, which include Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease. Viral infections, including influenza, HIV and hepatitis can also be treats by it (Gene therapy for diseases, 2011). According to the Science Daily in 2011, gene therapy now can apply to heart failures and neurologic diseases as well.
...on by revolting against British authority and Jewish immigrants. The subsequent White Papers of 1937 and 1939 that the British released were to pacify both sides but sufficiently proved to both the Arabs and the Zionists that the British were unwilling to support just one side and their policies, including the Balfour Declaration, proved to be conflicting ideas. Furthermore the British could not balance the two opposing national movements forever as both were growing with the increase of Jewish immigration and land sales. Eventually the Arabs and Zionists rebelled against the British who in never supporting one side wholeheartedly lost its hold over the entire of Palestine. In the years to come many British leaders “soon reached the conclusion that the Balfour Declaration had been a colossal blunder, unfair to the Arabs and detrimental to the empire’s interests”
The crestfallen tone shows that, as a citizen, the government let people down. Ginsberg thinks that all the economic recovery America gained was through human suffering, since the Depression made a rebound after America started marketing weapons to Europe in World War Two. Uncle Sam has made war the national business. How could you be patriotic towards a country with “libraries full of tears” (12), a country whose history is full of
The way society views same sex marriage can change. Throughout history, many beliefs have changed. In the past, black people were not considered as citizens in the constitution. It is not until the thirteenth amendment in 1865 that slavery was banned. Women were not considered equal to men and were not given the right to vote until 1920 when congress passed the fourteenth amendment. It takes time but opinions and beliefs can change and the past has shown us that is indeed possible! Same sex marriage are nothing more than the union of two humans being that care, love, and want to make commitments to each other. That commitment can not be recognized unless same sex marriage is legalized.
