An Overview of Search Engines
Search engines are used all over the world, everyday, by millions of people. These devices are websites that collect and compile data from the internet so that other web pages, links, and different information can be found more easily. There are an unfathomable number of search engines on the internet. Some popular ones include Google, Yahoo, Dogpile, Infoseek, Lycos, Alta Vista, Excite, MSN Search and Hotbot. With so many websites to choose from, it makes it hard to decide which search engine is the best fit for your task at hand.
Each search engine gathers their listings in fundamentally two different ways. One system uses a crawler-based search engine that creates their listings automatically. In order to operate, the crawler-based search engine consists of three major elements; spider, index, and search engine software. The first element, spider, which is also called the crawler, is used to visit the web page, read it, and then follow the links to other pages within the site. When someone refers to a site as being “spidered” or “crawled”, this is what that means. In case of change in a web site, the spider returns frequently to look for these changes that may have occurred. The second part of the search engine is known as the index, which is basically a storage unit containing a copy of every web page that the spider had found. When the webpage ever changes, the index will be updated with the new information that had been found. In some cases when a website had made changes, the index may not store the new changes as fast as the spider did. In this case, until the information is updated, this web site is unable to access those searching with the search e...

The future holds a lot for the people, and computers are doing wonders in our lifetime. Search Engines are the first place computer users start in order to find a specific topic they are looking for, and the information that is found by these search engines will only develop more and amplify our knowledge.

In 1998, when Google created its search engine, very little data was available about search engines. One of the first search engines was the Wold Wide Web Worm, which was not released unitl 1994. In order to research and create a more dynamic search engine Google’s creators had very little information to go on, and encountered many challenges. It is a challenge to create a high quality search engine as search engines need to crawl and then index millions of pages of information on the web. An additional feature of Google’s large scale search engine is that it will use hypertext information to refine search results. The challenge is to be able to scale the vast amount of data available on the web. The main goal is to improve the quality of search results. The second goal is to be able to make all the data on the web available for academic research. One of the key features of Google that sets it apart from other web search engines is that it is built to scale well to large data sets. It plans to leverage the increase in technological advances and decrease in hardware and storage costs to create its robust system.
The algorithms of search engines are as mysterious as the Force in Star Wars. Some claim to know everything there is and keeps up with the latest updates from Google and Bing, while others know the underhanded tactics that let them squeak by during the updates.

One of the wonderful things about the internet is how it makes life much easier if the information can be found in the convenience of the home instead of going to a library and making a day out of it. This is especially true if the internet offers updated information as soon as it happens were as a library may only update a few things every week or month at a time. It is truly remarkable how much information can be found and because of this it isn’t unbelievable that more and more people are using the internet instead of going to a library or using another service the internet can offer them. However, without organization and direction information is useless. Search engines offer this stepping stone by storing all the data in a manor that is searchable. Two of the major search engines are Google.com and Msn.com. Both offer great search engines and services, but have different styles and appeal to different audiences looking for different things.
According to Lynch (2008), creating a web based search engine from scratch was an ambitious objective for the software requirement and the index website. The process of developing the system was costly but Doug Cutting and Mike Cafarella believed it was worth the cost. The success of this project unlocked the ultimately democratized algorithm of search engine system. After the success of this project, Nutch was started in 2002 as a working crawler and gave rise to the emergence of various search engines.

Search Engine Optimization, which is also known as SEO, is the process of increasing the volume and quality of traffic to a website from search engines via organic or search results. The higher your company's website ranks on Search Engine Result Page (SERP), the more searchers will visit your site.
The most important application of Information Retrieval system is search engine like Google, which identify those documents on the World Wide Web that are relevant to user queries or a set of given words. It also refers to the automatic retrieval of documents from document collection.
When searching on the Internet, one may find it difficult sometimes to know where to start. With the seemingly limitless amount of information, one should use the resource suitable for the searcher's needs and tastes. Comparing different factors like databases, directory types, strengths and weaknesses of two search engines, such as Yahoo! and Lycos, can provide an advantage to someone looking for a starting block.

Search engines have many capabilities from using key words or phrases to find what you are looking for to using general statements to browse the web. But what exactly is a search engine? Search engines are huge databases of web page files that have been assembled automatically by machine. There are two types of search engines. One type is the individual search engine. This type of search engine compiles its information on to its own database making it accessible when you use that particular engine. It does not use any other engine?s information to help with your search. Then there are the meta-searchers which do not have their own databases. They use a combination of individual search engine?s information simultaneously, from a single site and using the same interface. Meta-searchers provide a quick way of finding out which engines are retrieving the best results for you in your search. There are two ways that Meta-searchers show their results. Most use a single list which display multiple-engine search results in a single merged list and had removed all the duplicate entries from the list. The second way that they display their results is through multiple lists. These are separate lists in which are displayed as they are received from each engine leaving the duplicate entries on the list.
The Internet has made access to information easier. Information is stored efficiently and organized on the Internet. For example, instead of going to our local library, we can use Internet search engines. Simply by doing a search, we get thousands of results. The search engines use a ranking system to help us retrieve the most pertinent results in top order. Just a simple click and we have our information. Therefore, we can learn about anything, immediately. In a matter of moments, we can become an expert.
