Allston Corner's Hidden Drama
Site of '60s homeowners rebellion may become the next Harvard Square
Except for the occasional group of teenagers furtively smoking in front of the 7-Eleven, no one spends much time in Allston’s Barry’s Corner. Bordered by gas stations, loading docks, and an uninviting concrete apartment complex, the intersection of North Harvard Street and Western Avenue is a place to speed through before the light changes.
Chris Fazio, an Allston resident and employee at the nearby Harvard Business School, always tries to walk through Barry’s Corner as quickly as possible.
He describes it as a “soul-crushing urban wasteland” that “always looks dirtier than it is. You get the impression that it was just thrown together and abandoned,” he said. “It’s depressing.”
But it wasn’t always this way. It used to be a place that people fought to save.
In 1961, the owners of the 52 houses that once made up Barry’s Corner were shocked to learn on the news that their neighborhood would be sacrificed to urban renewal, according to Thomas O’Connor’s book “Building a New Boston.” Calling the area “blighted,” the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) planned to demolish it to make way for a luxury apartment complex, O’Connor wrote. Residents rebelled against the plans – at one point even arming themselves with brooms and shovels to chase away a BRA appraisal team – but they only delayed the inevitable for a few years. The city agreed to switch the new development to moderate income housing, but the character of Barry’s Corner was irrevocably changed.
Now, after nearly 40 years, Barry’s Corner is once again being eyed for a makeover.

...e police department is better prepared to serve the residents of the neighborhoods,” he said in an e-mail.
Across the highway in North Allston, the nightlife is much quieter. Few undergraduates live in the neighborhood and the Harvard Business School graduate students have little time for raucous keg parties.
Will it be different fifty years from now?
As BU students flock to the bars and restaurants on Harvard and Brighton Avenues in South Allston, the sidewalks are empty in Barry’s Corner. Soon the number 66 bus pulls up, dislodging a handful of commuters. They step gingerly over the puddles flanking the wide streets. The kids are back in front of the 7-Eleven, but they don’t linger long.
It’s hard to picture this corner changing.
Will future Allstonians ever care enough again about Barry’s Corner to fight for its survival? Only time will tell.
Euclid Avenue, referred to as “Millionaire’s Row” from the late 1800s to the 1920s, is one of the oldest corridors in Cleveland, Ohio. This corridor has undergone a number of redevelopment projects in the past century, as the city itself transformed from a commercial town in the 1800s, to the industrial city it is today. Large areas of the Euclid Avenue corridor were demolished in the 1960s, as part of a series of urban renewal programs. These programs were established to revitalize office and housing markets in downtown Cleveland and to further encourage development of University Circle, a neighborhood of cultural, educational and medical institutions, located on the east side of Cleveland. The Euclid Avenue Corridor continues to experience various redevelopment projects, in order to secure its economic position in U.S. and international markets.
Background: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was and still is one of the most influential people in India’s Independence history. His role as a leader and a pacifist eventually taught the Indian public about the importance of satyagraha.
...ad almost everywhere . . . rarely take the laptop along now. The iPad is that powerful.” For me, the iPad is worth the expense to get something with such quality and advanced technology.
The MacBook Pro has a solid-state drive with 1TB SSD which is just what I needed to save the many files and pictures I have. What is great about the solid-state drive is that it is faster to transfer energy, can use less power than hard drives do, don’t make noise and can be more reliable because they’re not mechanical. A fast-hard drive is just what I needed to open my school assignments and surf the web. The MacBook Pro has a RAM of 16GB which is a good amount for me. Having sufficient RAM means my computer will run much faster and that is just what I need. The last thing I will be talking about is the number of cores, clock speed and battery
It was here that he became more maturely and outwardly aware of the social injustices brought upon a people group as a result of a harsh political system with no rights for its Indian people. It was not just the mere understanding and compassion for others that was born. It was also his direct experience with the dehumanizing treatment at the hands of the European authorities. He took this experience back with him to India, and whether it was with intent or not, he began to build upon his experience and gain a reputation for “saintliness” (Lal, 2012, p. 2) with those he came in contact with. Again, it was not only his physical ability to exude peace and love to people but his educational experience afforded him the ability to write detailed and adequate propositions to facilitate change among his nation. Even more notable is his response to the resistance of authorities, whereby he remained a peaceful opposition in spite of imprisonment. Ultimately, Gandhi’s driving force was to see India a nation independent and at peace. Gandhi, by the late stages of his movement had gained such a following and support that he boldly challenged those that felt and believed in his mission be just as committed as he was to lay down their lives (in the turn your other cheek type of action) in order to see India freed (Lal,
As a young college student walking into a Best Buy to purchase a laptop for college can be a little intimidating. There are many things to consider such as hard drive, what processors are the best, which screen has the best resolution, or would you rather build a computer that best suits you. The options are endless and in most cases it can become overwhelming, due to the rapid expansion in technology a variety of products that are available have increased dramatically in the past 7 years. Some of the most important criteria that should be considered when evaluating these products are portability, performance, and price. The MacBook Air is an interesting product, because it isn’t top of the line in any of these criteria. In fact, it has a balance of all three that have made it one of the top selling products of recent. Of course no laptop is made to run the same, but that is what makes this specific different than others.
Gandhi had worked out the basic strategy of nonviolent resistance, which he called satyagraha. It consisted of training a core of volunteers who helped to lead mass marches and mass violations of specific laws that resulted in intentional mass arrests. Three satyagraha campaigns made him famous in India even before he returned. While he was still in South Africa, Gandhi wrote about India in his pamphlet, "Hind Swaraj,” and targeted industrial civilization because he thought that was the real enemy.
The primary concern of most purchasers is money. Everyone is on a tight budget, but you must also ensure that you choose a system that is right for your needs. Processing speed is generally going to be the primary complaint for most computer users. The biggest complaint of most users is that their system is simply "not fast enough". "Not fast enough" can mean many different things. To objectively shop for new computer one must figure out why their existing system is really not up to their needs. To do so, they should take a look at their usage habits. Find out what programs they are using and why the system is not running efficiently with those programs. It could be that their system simply needs more memory. It could also be that simple maintenance would need to be performed on the system. Simple operations such as defragmenting the hard drive or uninstalling programs that are see utilizing all the resources in the system could make the computer feel like it is new again. Many times systems, especially those running Windows operating systems, will become bogged down over time with temporary Internet files, bloated registries, malicious programs and simply useless programs that users don 't even use. Many times simply reinstalling the operating system on the computer will make the user feel as though it is new again. However, in many instances new software that users try to purchase is simply too much for their existing system to handle. In these cases one cost saving measure could be to simply upgrade the system. Many computers, especially those that are built from parts ordered online, are easily upgraded. Many times a faster processor or more RAM can simply be installed; bringing new life to a computer. However, systems or purchase from stores or large box retailers such as Dell and HP, are generally much more hassle to upgrade as they
Gandhi had an influential background of Ahimsa, a set of principle against violence towards living things. Therefore, Gandhi believed it was wrong to use violence in political conflicts or any conflict in that matter, for it would only arouse both parties with anger and incent them to use forceful tactics to achieve their goal. Nonetheless, Gandhi understood his political efforts; “passive resistance” in South African produced limited results. Simply opposing political injustice through speeches, petitions and negotiations were not enough to have whites understand and sympathize how Indians were treated unjust (P. Ackerman., J. Duvall., 2000. pg. 65). As a result, Gandhi later adopted “satyagraha” position, a nonviolent though forceful tactic to apply pressure on those in power by protesting against unjust policies through noncooperation
Most small communities never want to modernize. As in updating to the most recent form of things they already have. By being a small town inside of a larger city, it shows that Grover’s Corner doesn’t want to modernize because they think it’s going to become more like the city. “They’re all getting citified, that’s the trouble with them. They haven’t got nothing fit to burgle and everybody knows it.” (Dr. Gibbs)The Citizens of this community are so afraid of change. And in their case change would be a good thing. The life style of living in an old fashioned way is not good at all. My Concern is that if the town as a whole doesn’t want to upgrade to a better or more advance way of living will they ever grow and learn how to live and make mistakes as they come.
Another response I found surprising with a participant that owns a Sony was with Patrick. He said that Sony laptops give back what you pay for and despite the recalls, he would still go with Sony (Patrick, Personal Interview, March 2010). He believes that every laptop become difficult at some point. Although Patrick has only had his Sony VAIO for about a year, he has already been experiencing some minor issues, such as, the fan being too loud, the speed getting slower, and the battery life getting worse. But even though, Patrick said that it is comforting to know that a top consumer electronics brand such as Sony has reliable customer services to tackle those issues (Patrick, Personal Interview, March 2010).
decision that is very important if you decide to buy a computer for work or home
With police funding cuts on the rise and looking to continue it is going to have to be up to every resident in every neighborhood and community to begin looking out for each other to help keep crime in their area to a minimum. The police will still be there to help people and respond to calls and emergency’s but people need to learn to help each other out too.
By both parties working together, they can improve the quality of the community by organizing meetings with the police department as well as answer questions that a serious incident that occurred in their neighborhoods. Researchers determined that traditional policing continue to be a widespread throughout the twentieth century and still creates an traiditonal importance on the law enforcement departments (Ferrandino,
As many immigrant and minority communities see the police as corrupt, community policing could be a step in the right direction to gain their trust and to show legitimacy. Many troubled neighborhoods have poor collective efficiency and police departments can help community 's gain this with community policing. Many times where neighborhoods need community policing the most(high crime spots) there is poor citizen involvement in police events and programs(Skogan 1988).Residents could fear that if they cooperate with law enforcement the criminals will retaliate(Grinc 1994). Even with community policing, minorities, especially blacks do not seem to get the benefit of involvement(skogan 1990).
