Marjorie Garber's Vested Interests: Cross-dressing and Cultural Anxiety
The tendency to establish rigid social codes of gender-determined behaviors is apparent everywhere--though specifically present in literary texts. Women are expected to, in essence, be women and act, dress, and behave in a manner that distinguishes them from men. While these constructs are rigidly defined, they are easily and recurrently transcended. In her, Vested Interests: Cross-dressing and Cultural Anxiety, Majorie Garber demonstrates the concept of "cultural binarisms", illustrating them to be the social and historical obsession with polarizing individuals, male or female, into either "one" group or the "other." In her essay, she concentrates her discussion on the importance of dress in the construction of gender and its power in undermining it. Garber writes that gender boundaries--which she defines as blurred social concepts--can be transcended by the cross-dresser. Additionally, the appearance of a transvestite character indicates that a "category crisis" is present, but not limited to gender identity. This "category crisis", is resultant of the "binarisms" which have been disturbed. Herman Mann's account, The Female Review: Life of Deborah Sampson, the Female Soldier, reinforces Garber's assertions about the cross-dressing figure in literature-- once Sampson puts on men's clothing, her identity is changed. She is, therefore, able to transgress the limited capacities of a woman and access her desires to see the world. Mann addresses several instances of "binarisms"--including gender, class, and status--throughout his text. Through his character of Deborah Sampson, he is able to display a separate, but relevant issue of a socially and politically ...

...and(habit). Also, Mann states about Sampson's desire to become a soldier: "and in the end, perhaps, [she would] be instrumental in the CAUSE OF LIBERTY, which had for nearly six years, enveloped the minds of her countrymen" (Mann, 233). This statement makes a direct comment on the state of his country and Sampson's impact on its freedom. In this way, he connects her desires of cross-dressing and living as a man to his desires of witnessing American Liberty.

Sampson did not always like slavery, and it was in Alabama when he realized Ms. Henfield was his “savior”. In Alabama Sampson was treated very poorly and while Sampson was working in the fields, his overseer beat him for no reason. At that point, he hated slavery and was miserable until he went to the Henfield plantation. Mrs.Henfield treated her slaves nice, never whips them, and Sampson loves this. His motivation was to milk Mrs.Henfields leniency so he can get what he wants, and never get into trouble. Sampson’s motivation and plan soon backfired as he began to become brainwashed. Sampson states,” Slavery is the best thing to happen to us niggers” (Lester 97)This is an example of Julius Lester’s first person view of Sampsons. He followed
Part One: Overview of depression, the serotonin system, and explanation of SSRI medications and alternatives.
In Judith Halberstam’s piece “Female Masculinity,” she offers the audience a few potential definitions of the term ‘masculinity’ and how the term applies to “feminine masculinity.” She states that “although we seem to have a difficult time defining masculinity, as a society, we have little trouble recognizing it” (935). Halberstam suggests that female masculinity is often blatantly ignored in culture and studies due to the indifferent feeling often associated with the topic. Halberstam uses her essay to explain a variety of aspects associated with female femininity like tomboys, queer methodologies, and the bathroom problem. Halberstam’s description of the term ‘Tomboys’ is reminiscent of the character Emily Fields from the Pretty Little Liars book series by Sara Shepard. Progressing through middle school with a group of ‘girly’ friends, Emily is easily labeled with the term ‘tomboy’ due to her sporty exterior. Her overly conservative Christian family and classmates see no ‘threat’ or meaning behind Emily’s tomboy appearance because they believe it is just a stage in her life. As soon as Emily enter tenth grade and starts hanging out with a homosexual female, her family and classmates grow concerned about Emily’s masculine looks and behaviors. In the book titled Prettty Little Liars, one of the liars, Emily’s evident masculine ways raises concern to her thesis-go back and fix it .
People take antidepressants when they are suffering from depression which is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. [6]
Depression can result from a physical disease, a mental illness, or it can be a recurring reaction of the body. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, major depressive illnesses are often the result of imbalances in neurotransmitters in the brain. It is these critical chemicals that send messages between nerve fibers and control mood (Creamer, 3). Older anti-depressants worked on three different neurotransmitters, serotonin, norepinepherine, and dopamine. However, it has been found that serotonin is the specific chemical in the brain that controls moods. Its job is to carry an impulse from one nerve fiber to the next. Serotonin is released by the nerve into the space between nerve fib...

History has caused a shift from psychological treatment of mental health to a biological and more specifically pharmacological approach to treatment. Boniwell and Rostron, (2010) suggested that the latter approach can provide a better understanding for mental illness. For example, understanding the biological function of stress response, has allowed specialists to develop mechanisms that can control the level of chemicals in the body, thus control development of mental illnesses (Datta,
From childhood to adulthood, two of the most experienced mental health disorder are depression and anxiety. Animal-assisted therapy has been very effective in patients that suffer from a major depressive disorder, also known as depression. This disorder is very common and interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. Feelings of sadness overtake a person’s daily life and lead to the uninterest of regular routines and activities. The traditional way of dealing with depression is giving patients antidepressants. However, it is known that previous treatments such as antidepressant drugs haven’t been effective towards patients. Hoffmann (2009) did a study in which he and his colleagues confirmed that Animal-assisted therapy is a healthy

In society, constructs of correctness have been formed on the basis of expected, gendered behavior. Individuals have traditional roles that they play which are based on the historical performance of their gender. Although very rigid, these traditional roles are frequently transferred, resulting in an altered and undefinable identity that exists beyond the boundaries of gender. These transgressions into the neuter role are characterized by a departure from the normal roles of society which, if successful, complete the gender transference and allow the individual to live within a new set of boundaries. The Female Marine, or the Adventures of Lucy Brewer is the fictional autobiography of a woman who recounts her experiences in the navy and life as a cross-dressed male. Throughout her narratives, Lucy is able to successfully leap back and forth between gender roles without repercussion. On the other hand, Hannah W. Foster's The Coquette is a sentimental seduction tale that narrates the tragic demise of a young woman who attempts to exceed acceptable behavioral boundaries by establishing herself as a virile, independent individual, a role established by Simone de Beauvoir to be associated with the male (Beauvoir 405). Because of the similarity in the situations of these women there lies a need for an examination of their narrative purpose. The differing results of success with these women are found in the author's reflection of their audience's narrative expectations that deal with the social outcome of women who attempt to move beyond gender-identified behavioral roles.
If you have ever watched or heard of NASCAR you would know that when there is a crash it is often huge and deadly, however, the plethora of safety features they use keeps the driver safe. I am not asking for that level of protection but I would like to have a car that is at least in good condition and runs well. It will be worth the cost to fix it if you want it to last longer, and it would not be that much for parts since it is a cheap car. I also know that when the rest of the family drives it they would enjoy having a nicely fixed up ride as opposed to a car that looks like a junker. Getting our car fixed should be imperative rather than optional.
Relief is simply the difference in elevation between higher point and lower point on the earth’s surface. The highest point of the earth is the peak of the Mount Everest and the lower point is Mariana trench in Pacific Ocean. The difference in elevation of the earth’s surface is due to endogenic and exogenic process operating in the earth’s crust. Relief is arranged in order according to time, process and the ways are formed (shaping or reshaping). The following are the orders of relief:
There are times when you find yourself in a fix, with the car suddenly dying on you, while on the way to work. To your dismay, you realized that it’s out of warranty, but you still need to have it fixed immediately, as it is your only means of transport. You did the next best thing, and have it towed towards the nearest repair shop to get an estimate of repair. The mechanic calls later, to give you a litany of parts that needs to be replaced and repaired. The list seemed endless, and you get shock by the amount involved that you have to shell out. You then wonder if the mechanic is just trying to swipe a few bucks from you, since you don’t understand anything about cars.
