Online Teaching – Now and the Future Online teaching is defined as any educational activity that requires a student to complete some learning or assessment activity via a personal computer and a connection to a network (Murdoch University Academic Council 1999). This network connection is usually to the Internet (Demirdjian 2002). It is a seen by the Murdoch University Academic Council as a teaching and learning technology, not a method of study (2002), but this depends on how it is to be used and by whom. For example, distance education student using online teaching would be more inclined to see it as a study method than a QUT student who uses online teaching to download and print lecture notes to attend a lecture on campus. The world’s universities make extensive use of online teaching. It is being used to the extent that some predict that in a few decades university campuses will be a thing of the past and that university courses will be done almost completely online (Demirdjian 2002). Online teaching at QUT mainly involves the use of e-mail for communication between students and teachers and the placement of lecture materials on the Internet OLT site for download and printing by students. Some subjects make use of an online discussion forum and also use a course materials database to contain readings and other materials for students to use. The benefits that this technology offers to students at university can be seen as coming under three broad areas – geographical, temporal and financial (Demirdjian 2002). The geographical benefits are that students can undertake a course of study from anywhere in the country and indeed the world. After going through this, the last thing they want is for their daughters to have to face the same challenges. In the mothers’ eyes, the least they can do is lend some of their Chinese insight to aid their American daughters.
The mothers and daughters not only experience a generation gap, but since the mothers were born in China and the daughters were born in America, they also experience a certain cultural gap. This leads to miscommunication and misunderstanding on both parts. To the mothers, their Chinese heritage is very meaningful to them and the Americanized daughters don’t always understand this. The daughters get embarrassed by their mothers’ broken English. For instance, at one point Lindo Jong says "But inside I am becoming ashamed. I am ashamed she is ashamed. Because she is my daughter and I am proud of her, and I am her mother and she is not proud of me." (pg. 291). Lindo is hurt because her daughter Waverly, is talking to her like she is a child. Waverly does not do this on purpose, she just has a hard time understanding her mother and her background, like the other daughters in the book.
The Roman Empire was the most powerful Empire during Antiquity. It is traditionally considered to have “fallen” in 476, when Rome’s last emperor was deposed. Many theories have been presented as to why it fell, from unsound economic and social policies to mass lead poisoning. The actual cause of Rome’s fall is the result of many factors, but was mainly caused by Rome’s poor economic policies.
At the age of eighteen, a young man or woman gains most rights as an adult. A few rights of an eighteen year old varies from voting, being able to join the armed forces, serve in a jury, apply for a credit card, and much more. Turning twenty one brings only few rights that are not received at the age of eighteen-twenty. These rights consist of being able to adopt a child, allowed to get certain licenses, and to supervise a learner driver. (M. Yong) Raising the drinking age would make that right, one of the few that are not gained at age eighteen and would only infuriate eighteen-twenty year olds which would then lead to more problems and illegal activities. The drinking age is seen as a privilege rather than a right because having a low drinking age seems to have more of a positive effect rather than a negative one on the Virgin Islands.
Lowering the legal drinking age would create problems such as infringing on the mental and physical development of the young drinker. As a respected author, Matt Nagin puts it, “The late teens and early twenties are formative years where character building, leadership in the community, and scholastic excellence should be emphasized. Alcohol detracts from all of these.” In other words, Nagin believes that the teen years are an imperative time of growth in a person’s life. Scientists have proven that the brain is not fully developed until the age of twenty five. If Nagin’s argument is correct, and I believe it is, then people should understand that scientists have proven the negative affects that alcohol has on the development of the brain. Alcohol has the power to kill brain cells and damage growth hormones. By making alcohol legally accessible to an eighteen year old, we are literally poisoning his or her brain.
The last reason that caused the fall of Rome was the multiple natural disasters that happened in the year 336 CE. According to the article, it says that,”... the Roman world was shaken by a violent and destructive earthquake...The shores of the Mediterranean were left dry by the sudden retreat of the sea... but the tide soon returned with the weight of an immense flood which severely felt on the coasts of Sicily…” the earthquake and the sudden flood killed about 50,000 people and that was in Alexandria alone.
