Keeping up with My Friends
In my early years, my family and I seemed to be up to date with the fast growing technology. We had the things the neighborhood kids were jealous of. Then as I grew older, something happened. All of a sudden, I wasn't the only one on the block with the cool stuff. In fact, my things paled in comparison to my friends' new things. Now I was a bit jealous of my friends. I would ask my dad if we could have some of the same things my friends did, and the answer was always, "No". I didn't understand why he suddenly changed his point of view, but on the whole, it didn't upset me that much. I was a child who could live without technology. I only really cared about it when I was around it too long. Even now, if we didn't have some of the technology we do, or if it was suddenly wiped out, I wouldn't be that distressed.
You see, when I was young, my imagination ran wild. I always had my head in the clouds. Whenever my friends and I would play, I would come up with elaborate plots to pretend, or crafts to do. My friends and I would make up plays, get dressed up and put them on for an audience of parents. Anything and everything in my world could be used in a childhood adventure. There seemed to be no limit to the creativity my mind produced.
It wasn't because I lived in the middle of nowhere with no TV and nothing better to do with my time. In fact, some of my friends would use me for the things we had in my house. Remember Colecovision; that great game system from the early 80's? We were one of the first families to own it, and with every game imaginable. We also played Atari games. None of my friends, or my brother's friends for that matter, had anything like it, and we became very popular for a while....

...utely nothing. I didn't used to like spending hours in front of a screen, and I still don't, and yet I do it anyway. There's so much on the internet, and so much of it is there just so people can waste their time doing nothing.
I use my laptop every day. I always go on either to do homework, or to talk to my friends, but I wish I didn't have to. E-mail is fast and easy, but I believe it's becoming so impersonal. About a month ago I went out and bought stationery. Now I'm sending a lot more personalized letters than e-mail. It's almost unheard of now to get an actual hand written letter from someone. I think that's sad. Handwritten things are valued more now. No one takes the time to handwrite something to someone else, and when they do, it's a shock. I guess I haven't changed much. I like technology and what it can do, but I still wouldn't mind living without it.
Chris Van Allsburg grew up in a quiet suburban setting in Grand Rapids, Michigan. During the 1950’s, when he was a child, the town was a place that seemed like a haven for any young boy. There were open fields that provided places for the children to enjoy a baseball game in the spring. The houses were not separated by fences, but rather blended together by the yards. The setting in which he grew up provided activities and locations that fostered imagination. He used to go down to the edge of a river and tried to catch tadpoles. Walking around in the wilderness that surrounded his town could be very relaxing and allow for the mind to conjure up many ideas. The child’s mind has a great ability to make up stories, but when you are constantly “practicing” at make-believe, you tend to become better and better at it. You also come to develop your own unique style.
As a child, I experienced a world of imagination where I was able to do anything I
Technology does seem to move too fast and maybe we should mourn what we are leaving behind. But then again, people that like to reminisce about the past can also be left behind like it. Sometimes, it is important to stop living in the past and better your future. The articles “ How Computers Change the Way We Think” and “ Electronic Intimacy” both made amazing arguments, but like I said, it all depends on how technology is used. Technology does seem to have the power to push us further or closer to each other, but at the end of the day, it is just another tool
I was a pretty normal child. I like to play with friends and family. I would make up what I wanted to do and play house. I also liked to play supermarket. Librarian, and Doctor. I got to be whatever we wanted. It was all pretend though. As, I was watching the video’s for unit six, the video, Tales of Creativity and Play by Tim Brown reminded me of how I used to play. He talked about how we needed trust to play and trust to be creative. That makes sense. I usually only played with family. People how I trust. I played with people around my age. I think that was my trust to be creative, because people around my age would pretend with me. He mentioned exploration and building with your hands. As a child I loved to explore outside and would use my hands to make mud pies and so on. He also mentioned role play. I loved to role play, because I could do anything I wanted. As I grew up I realized it was a lot harder to be a whatever I wanted on the spur of the moment. One thing stuck though. That was my creativity.
Imagination is one of the most unique and fascinating elements of the human mind. It is essentially using one’s mental abilities and memories to create specific imagery. This imagery helps people to be innovative, conceptualize, and come up with clever solutions to solve difficult problems. Imagination allows people to go outside of reality in order to envision ideas that they could not visualize otherwise. Without imagination, there would be very little originality and ingenuity. Unfortunately, people are slowly becoming less imaginative because of mind-numbing activities, society’s lack of encouraging creativity, and an educational system that emphasizes
Imagination is a word that applies to everyone. It remains a part of everyone’s life throughout childhood and adulthood. An imagination has no boundaries, and every individual’s imagination is one-of-a-kind. Imagination makes the dull perspective of life fun and entertaining. Its degree of influence on people and its uniqueness make imagination a particularly fascinating word, and this is why I was interested to delve deeper into the history and evolution of its definition. Initially, the first phrases that come to mind are “using your imagination” and “having a big imagination.” To me, these phrases mean forming new ideas by thinking creatively and having a big capacity for creative thinking. When I think of the word itself, I consider it to refer to the unique thoughts and fantasies that can lead to coming up with stories, uncommon inventions, and new ideas or concepts.
Here Bentham is saying that the principle is the only valid of deciding and justifying our actions, that the principle should be applied regardless of any others, as it is the only true and reliable way of defining whether an action is right or wrong. An advantage of utilitarianism is that it can be applied to any situation. Unlike many moral approaches you are not restricted by rules such as ‘it is always wrong to lie,’ or ‘killing is never right.’ This allows the philosopher to consider any dilemma or problem in it’s own specific context. For example applying Kantian ethics, abortion or euthanasia would have to be defined as wrong, however a utilitarian has the scope to make there own decision considering a range of factors and situations.
“Are you still there?” I sure hope so. Technology has affected us all so much. Eventually it won’t matter and kids will be getting cell phone and going on the internet at the age of 7. Sherry Turkle made a wonderful point by saying we are tethered to technology but I feel its just something you grow up with currently. My sister and I are huge electronic users but my friend Madison isn’t. They’re no real reason why we are so absorbed in using our phones or electronics but it
Technology has changed our world dramatically over the last several decades. Several generations before us did not have air conditioning, telephones, television much less internet. However, today we have access to all of this and more. Technological advances have not only made changes in how we communicate, but also in how everyday tasks are done. The New York Times explains how social media affects children’s behavior and academics, and how the concept of dating has been altered while Louis C. K. explains how the 21st century takes little things for granted and YouTube channel charstarlineTV shows how daily activities can no longer be done without the use of cellphones.
I was always a creative child; it was something I just could not not be. Back then I didn’t know how to be ‘normal.’ While the other children wrote their essays about their mothers and pets or their best friends, I wrote about becoming birds or about ducks building robots. Truly. I suppose I could blame it on my parents – my father for trying to teach me how to read when I was too young and my mother for reading The Hobbit by JRR Tolkein to me as my bedtime story – but I know, truthfully, that it wasn’t their fault. It is no one’s fault, for I do not see my strange imagination as a terrible, abnormal thing. I do know that no one in particular influenced my creativity when I was younger, but I remember being obsessive about certain stories. I remember when I got my first computer – a 16-color piece of, well, garbage that barely ran. But even though it was so old and primitive, it opened new doors for my imagination, and I spent my childhood either playing games about knights and dragons or running around outside and acting out my own unscripted scenari...
Electric cars were recently introduced to the auto world. They are very fuel efficient while still having all the practicalities of a regular car. They are quiet and have zero emissions. They also are cheaper to maintain and cheaper to own then a gas powered car. Even though car enthusiasts dislike the idea of going fully electric, it is a very conscientious choice. Electric cars might seem like a useless form of transportation, but they offer features that help keep the Earth clean.
Technology has really changed the world in a ton of ways. Some are ggod ways, and some are bad ways. What all people need to realize though, is that technology isn’t always going to be in their life. One day it is all going to drift away. Technology is not the most important thing in the world. If anything, it has caused more problems than anything. This is easier done than said, but put down the cellphone, get active. Lose those pounds that you gained after you got hooked on technology. Get connected with family more. Bond more with your friends. Get your head in books and off of TECHNOLOGY.
Over the last few decades, technology has greatly increased its abilities. It started from the simple radio to now having cell phones which can surf the web. Technology has greatly influenced our society in many ways. Nowadays it has made family relationships have a different connection and has simplified people’s lives. A couple decades ago, a person would never had imagined to Skype a family member across the world. It would be like trying to imagine teleportation. It was unthinkable, but with moderation, technology has evolved for the better. With the new technology in our world, people are able to talk to their distant family members. People are also able to save time and watch a movie with their extra time. There are pros and cons to having technology nowadays. Yes, people are able to communicate faster and save money, but technology is also disconnecting them from the people around them. Technology has changed humanity for the better, but humans must know to use technology in moderation.
As far back as I can remember my family and I have taken advantage of technology. The types of technology have changed over the years, along with our usage and dependence on it. Technology is a fundamental part of our lifestyle, including both work and play. What is interesting is that we also have many friends who use very little technology in their day-to-day living. This drastic difference makes one wonder how necessary the technology really is, and whether or not our dependence on it is healthy in the long run. It is really easy to just get caught up in using technology without thinking about the pros and cons.
Everybody; old and young have active an imagination, but we all express it differently than others. For me I express my imagination with my artwork. For example; when I was younger I watched a lot of cartoons just like any other kid. My favorite cartoon at the time was He-Man. I loved the show so much that I frequently dreamt and imagined of being strong like him, but I knew it could not be possible so instead of dreaming, I drew up an entire comic book of myself being a super strong super hero just like He-Man all thanks to my vivid imagination and artistic ability. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has done something similar.
