Microsoft has developed into an inescapable force within the technological field. Coming from a delayed humble beginning, it has had to devote large sums of money to approach the levels of the founding technological companies. Today, Microsoft controls the market in computer software. How they have achieved this status is what some have come to question. Through “bundling” software programs, manipulating other computer companies, and packaging deals with personal computers, Microsoft has managed to eradicate nearly all competitors in the computer software market (Love, 1997). This near monopoly affects the entire spectrum of classes, including the consumer, other networking providers, Microsoft, and the economy at large.
As a consumer, one seeks convenience and value. Given this, Microsoft currently has an ideal product, but when all other companies have been sold out by them or have gone bankrupt, Microsoft can take it easy in the development of its product and skyrocket prices. The consumer will be profoundly affected, both economically and technologically (Love, 1997).
Antitrust laws have long been in place in this country, one reason is to benefit the consumer. The ability to choose which company an individual buys his or her products from forces competition among businesses. Companies strive to innovate and improve their products for one reason, to be better than their competitors and thus sell more products. A monopoly in any form would take away the drive to improve, as there would be no competition. This would put the consumer at the mercy of the company, who could raise prices is they chose to.
