Corporal Punishment
Since the mid-1950s, parents and psychologists have been battling over the topic concerning corporal punishment. The parents were raised in homes where corporal punishment was used, and they feel that it was a successful technique that raised them well. Psychologists, on the other hand, conducted research; a lot of which was biased and false, telling parents that corporal punishment was bad for their children. After years of researching and studying the effects of corporal punishment, the most popular theories stating that it is a harmful technique, were proven wrong. Corporal punishment is found to be a good technique in the right situations, with the right motives, and using the correct tools.
During the 80s and 90s, the media over-exaggerated books and survey results which had a negative effect on corporal punishment in private homes and schools. The media virtually ignored the results of surveys if they had positive things to say about corporal punishment. Almost all of the studies came to the same conclusion when discussing the type of people that use corporal punishment on their children. Most of the parents who were advocates for corporal punishment were Jewish or Christian parents, following their belief in what the Bible says. The research also included other possible ways that parents could punish their children, but many of these were found to be unsuccessful for many children or they worked better when spanking was included. The division of good is decided upon by reader and character according to their perspective. For the reader, the sympathy is usually pointed towards the victim of the situation, but this play twists the power balance between victim and attacker. It makes the characters believe the victim is the prosecutor, and the prosecutor is the victim. The consequences of this role reversal involve the incrimination of a character with profoundly good morals, Rebecca Nurse. In the beginning, Rebecca was recognized by Hale when he says to her, “It’s strange how I knew you, but I suppose you look as such a good soul should.” (Miller 34) Rebecca Nurse is condemned in a time of great hysteria. Even she, a character who seems good and does nothing but good, is caught in the blasphemous whirlwind that shakes Salem.
Throughout the drama, The Crucible, the characters are faced with chilling choices as they maneuver through a world that has lost its moral compass. The crucibles, the serious tests, of their dearly held values put them in the position of having to figure out what is right and true in a world turned upside down. The value of truth is tested when lies are rewarded and truth brings suffering, shame and the scaffold of the gallows. The value of justice is challenged by a system that comes to be based on coerced confessions, unsubstantiated charges and self-serving political scheming. The value of love, be it of husband and wife or of friends and community, is put to the test where true love is exemplified by fatal choices.

On the contrary are people who think spanking a child is destructive. Somewhere in the middle are people who believe spanking is legitimate only when used correctly. Arthur Miller writes about the tragic results of human failings in his play, The Crucible. He presents characters from the past and infuses them with renewed vitality and color. Miller demonstrates the horrifying results of succumbing to personal motives and flaws as he writes the painful story of the Salem witch trials. Not only do the trials stem from human failings but also from neglect of moral and religious considerations of that time. Characters begin to overlook Puritan values of thrift and hope for salvation. Focusing on the flawed characters, they begin to exhibit land lust, envy of the miserable and self-preservation.

In this case, the play shows the description of how intolerance and hysteria can intervene and tear a community apart. Even though it is written with archaic language, it is easy to follow through the historical context and stage directions. It helps readers understand the culture and the way of thinking in those days. The deception, reputation, and hysteria are the three main themes in the Crucible that are also present in today’s society.
