Internet Procurement

In order to understand the Internet Procurement industry, it is necessary to understand who the key players are and on what competitive dimensions they compete. To facilitate this understanding, I have put together a SWOT analysis of Oracle, Ariba, and Commerce One, as well as an analysis using Porter’s Five Forces framework. Understanding these three key players is necessary to understanding the industry and the competitive forces at work.

Ariba and Commerce One both provide a way to easily build an eCommerce community (suppliers and buyers). Oracle allows for such activity, but appears to have a limited electronic marketplace (for Internet Procurement) compared with Ariba and Commerce One. Their electronic marketplace does not appear to be as integrated as it does for Ariba or Commerce One, nor does it appear to be a key competitive dimension. It certainly is not marketed as such, at least. And, in marketing, perception is everything.

We will take a close look at Oracle, Ariba, and Commerce One, but first let’s take a look at their stock performance over the past five years.

As you can see, these are HOT companies. You might even want to invest in their stock. Part of the reason these stocks are doing so hot is that Internet Procurement is hot right now, and will continue to be for some time. Now, lets take a look at the three companies.

Oracle

...ve a lot of power with companies that haven’t implemented Internet procurement services (because there is plenty of competition and there are substitutes). Suppliers have even less power with companies that are using a competitor’s solution. However, once a company has invested in a supplier’s Internet procurement services, that supplier then becomes relatively powerful. The customer then relies on the supplier for one of it’s most mission critical areas, obtaining supplies.

Rivalry

1. Oracle – Proven technology, customized solution for middle market, high level of integration with existing systems

2. Ariba – Offers not only internet procurement services, but a complete system

3. Commerce One – Automates both internal processes and external supplier interactions.

4. In house development – biggest competitive threat
