Although it is usually 19th century European imperialism that appears in Western literature, Africans have felt pressure from outside powers for over a thousand years. By the year 1200, most of Northern Africa had adopted Islam, and the population consisted mainly of a blend of Arab and Berber peoples. It was at this time that the enslavement of black Africans along the eastern coast of the continent by Arabian pirates began. This slave trade, however, met fierce resistance from the flourishing African kingdoms of Kush and the Somali king, Nagus Yeshaq, who was a Christian Becker). Because the strength of the Arabic incursions was based mainly on conversion, the Islamic armies never penetrated deeply into sub-Saharan Africa. In the middle of the 15th century, Portuguese explorers began to establish trading outposts along the western coast of Africa, thus beginning the first steps toward imperialism by European nations. It is estimated that the first trading of Africans as slaves by the Portuguese began in 1444. The West African kingdom of Benin, however, still suc...
Europe, in the late 1800’s, was starting for a land grab in the African continent. Around 1878, most of Africa was unexplored, but by 1914, most of Africa, with the lucky exception of Liberia and Ethiopia, was carved up between European powers. There were countless motivations that spurred the European powers to carve Africa, like economical, political, and socio–cultural, and there were countless attitudes towards this expansion into Africa, some of approval and some of condemnation.
This essay deals with the nature of a cross cultural encounter between the Benin people and Portuguese traders in the 15th and 16th centuries, which resulted in the depiction of Portuguese figures in Benin brass plaques. It will propose that this contact between people with different cultures was on the basis of 'mutual regard' (Woods, K. 2008, p. 16), and although the Portuguese had qualms about idolatry in Benin it will show that assumptions by Europeans up to the 20th century of the primitive nature of tribal African societies was inaccurate with regard to the Benin people, who had a society based on the succession of the King or 'Oba', a Royal Family and Nobility. The essay will finally suggest that Benin’s increase in wealth following the arrival of the Portuguese led to a resurgence in bronze sculptures and the introduction of a new form, the rectilinear plaque.

The author also believes that the Medicaid expansion extends beyond the politics, and has an aim to impact the life, health, and financial stability for the state and individuals. Medicaid expansion can be beneficial to many countries that have a large proportion of low-income people that are uninsured and or with disabilities. This can aid in saving the state money because much of the cost is provided and covered by the federal government, that encourages healthier behavior and results to a reduction in chronic disease due to lower health care costs. Although Texas opted out in adopting the expansion, legislators should decide on the advantage and disadvantage of participating in the Medicaid expansion to improve the welfare of the state. The expansion of Medicaid coverage will give low-income pregnant women the chance to reduce the rate in infant mortality and provide an opportunity for those that were unable to get coverage to be

Medicare and Medicaid are two of the United States largest broken systems, which must sustain themselves in order to provide care to their beneficiaries. Both Medicare and Medicaid are funding by a joint effort between the federal government and the local state government. If and when these governments choose to cut funding or reduce spending, Medicare and Medicaid take the biggest hit. Most people see these two benefits as one in the same, two benefits the government takes out of their pay check to help fund health care. While the government does deduct a sum from paychecks everywhere, Medicare and Medicaid are very two very different programs.
Medicaid is social health care program that is funded by both the states and federal government. It helps with the medical cost for low income families, including people with disability, and the elderly. It’s been a law that everyone who falls below the poverty line should have access to health care regardless of their family status, however during the
What exactly is Medicaid? Medicaid is the largest health insurance in the United States, and it services many low-income families. This government health program is state regulated and varies among states due to having their own guidelines. Medicaid was signed into law on July the 30th, 1965. Medicaid’s guidelines come from the old Welfare law. “Medicaid has never matched that of food stamps, for which eligibility standards are linked to financial need alone. As Smith and Moore explains, the federal government, using its extraordinary demonstration powers under section 1115 of the Social Security Act, has allowed states to experiment with “decategorization” over the years, but Medicaid’s statutory bar against coverage of poor adults remains perhaps its most obvious failure” (Rosenbaum). Regardless of the many faults of this programs design, Medicaid helps close to 60 million low-income families in the United States. The people it helps would include: pregnant women, young children and their parents, the disabled, and the elderly, and other members of society that have low income. Medicaid is involved in many pregnancies and newborn care from a financial standpoint. It allows parents to have medical care for the child while in a low-income household. Medicaid has a huge impact on each states health systems and is used in a wide variety of ways.
The effectiveness of Medicaid with the good and the bad of how it is being distributed throughout the United States. According to Pros and Cons of Health Care Reform (2010), “100% federal financing of the Medicaid expansion through 2016 and phases down to 90% in 2020 and later years” (p. 1). For the states it is something that they will greatly benefit from to have as many people under health insurance. As of now, it will be 100% financed for the next 5 years, which is enough time for the states to come up with plans to figure out how they will be able sustain this program. I find that an equal and fair trade, since it has been able to cover a large number of the population. According to Pros and Cons of Health Care Reform (2010), 85% Medical

Let us look into basic and generalized knowledge of self injury. Self injury (self harm or S.I.) is the act of harming yourself as a way of coping with emotional pain, frustration, and anger. Some view it as a suicide attempt or a precursor to a suicide attempt, but it is not a suicide attempt at all. Rather, it is a serious cry for help. When an individual turns to self injury, they look for an emotional release which gives them momentary calmness. “While self-injury may bring a momentary sense of calm and a release of tension, it's usually followed by guilt and shame and the return of painful emotions” (Self Injury 1). Self injury can also result in serious or even fatal injuries (1).
