The Attack on Pearl Harbor Shapes American History
“Yesterday, December 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy . . .” These famous lines were spoken the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave this speech to the U.S. Congress on December 8, 1941. Many criticized the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, but the decision to attack America was wisely made. The Americans were going to enter the war sooner or later, and on the allies’ side. The attack on Pearl Harbor would hurt the United States’ strongest defense and kill many Americans. This was the first terrorist attack on the United States, by another country, which came as a total shock to many people.
One of the people who is rumored to have known about the attack was the president. President Roosevelt knew the attack against Pearl Harbor had to have been planned for a while, because of the distance, the organization, and telegrams that had been coming in. Japan was too far for the attack to be an accident or a spur of the moment type plan. The attack was well organized and the Japanese were prepared. The continental United States was receiving telegrams warning them that there would be an attack. Unfortunately, people in Hawaii were not warned; they were living their normal lives, doing things they were accustomed to doing such as going to parties, writing letters home, and just doing things that a man stationed in Hawaii would do. Many men wrote letters home to their girlfriend or parents or kept a journal. The following letter is an example. Doctor Paul E. Spangler wrote it:
"With my Pearl Harbor plates on I had the right of way and I was out there in nothing flat. ...I hurried up to the Surgery and already the casualties were p...

...ear of 1941. (53.19% for the former and 51.06% for the latter.) The percentage of people quizzed that didn’t know Pearl Harbor had been attacked from the air and sea was 48.94%. A low score of 31.91% people polled didn’t know that some Americans had known that a Japanese attack against the United States was going to take place. Also, 6.38% more people knew one of the ships damaged, compared to what day the attack to place. Only 46.81% of people polled know that Pearl Harbor is found on the island of Oahu.
Today, if you ever visit the island of Oahu, you can go to the Arizona memorial. It has all the names of the men who died, and you can still see the Arizona underwater. Even today, oil bubbles up from the watery entombment of hundreds of men, making sure that we never forget Pearl Harbor and to make sure we are always prepared for every battle we might face.
The conclusion as stated before but more simplified is, nature has a design, and that the architect of this design is God himself. This is the purpose of the argument as a whole. His entire drive for this argument seemed to convince others that there is a higher being with a higher power. Paley attempted to convince and bring the ath...
During the 1800th century, William Paley, an English philosopher of religion and ethics, wrote the essay The Argument from Design. In The Argument from Design, Paley tries to prove the existence of a supreme being through the development of a special kind of argument known as the teleological argument. The teleological argument is argument by analogy, an argument based on the similarities between two different subjects. This essay purposefully attempts to break down Paley’s argument and does so in the following manner: firstly, Paley’s basis for the teleological argument is introduced; secondly, Paley’s argument is derived and analyzed; thirdly, the connection between Paley’s argument and the existence of a supreme being is made; and lastly, the supreme being is compared to the supreme being in Western Philosophy, God.
Do you think Canada is still racist country? In my opinion, I definitely support the fact that Canada is not a racist country anymore. It has changed significantly since its birth; it was once a child, however, it has now grown up and is a role model for other countries. Rewinding back to the early and mid 1900, Canada was known as a racist country; however after WWII, it started to reduce the racism, sexism, and hatred against non-white Races. Canada began to allow multi races such as Chinese, Japanese, and the Jewish to live in Canada, however, life was still difficult for the non- whites. The essay “Our Home and Racist Land” was written approximately 50 years ago and talks about facts that occurred 30 years before the essay was written. The narrator of this story talks about her father in the 1930s. She states “looking for a job in the thirties was a scare, especially for blacks”. Her father had a tough time finding a job, since the racism level in Canada was reaching the sky. At first her father was a cook at The Great Lakes, he worked for extended hours a day and was not paid a fair amount, her father usually returned home in a jaded condition. . Is it anything like that in Canada today? No, it is not, today in Canada all adult workers are paid nothing below the minimum wage, and bonus pay kicks in when a worker decides to work overtime. Differiencity is not the solution in Canada anymore; it usually is against the Canadian law. The narrator of the essay includes that her father finally found a job in 1942 at Ford Motor Company’s transportation centre in Windsor. Her father was hapless at the time, fortunately his life and luck made a U turn and this proofs that Canada began to take a step towards a multiculturalism nation. ...
The first clear instance where Christianity is seen in Constantine's life is during his campaign against Maxentius. In the spring of 311, when Constantine was marching to Rome to battle against Maxentius, he saw a vision in the sky, a bright cross along with the words "by this sign conquer." Later that night, he had a dream in which God told him to use that sign as a safeguard to use in all of his future battles. Constantine awoke and immediately ordered his troops to inscribe the chi-rho, the sign he saw a combination of the Greek letters chi and rho, onto their shields (Constantine Converts to Christianity 312). Some historians have deemed it more appropriate to consider Constantine a patron of Christianity at this point rather than a convert as it appears that he is using it as a means to conquer and attributes his success to it rather being convicted and committed to Jesus Christ as a true Christian should (Legitimization Under Constantine). Meanwhile, at the same time that Constantine is having holy visions and dreams, Maxentius sought guidance and confirmation from pagan oracles and found a prophecy declaring the "the enemy of the Romans would parish." Emboldened by this prophecy, he left the defensive position of Rome and met Constantine at Milvian Bridge. Constantine was victorious despite having an army about a third of the size of Maxentius'. It is said that Maxentius' army became confused and scattered during the battle. Maxentius was drive...

In the Humanistic Tradition the author, Gloria Fiero introduces Adam smith as a Scottish moral philosopher, pioneer of political economy, and a key figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. Smith also known as the Father of Political economy, is best known for one of his two classic works An Inquiry into the nature and causes of the Wealth of Nations. Fiero looks at Smith’s work because the division of labor is important. One thing Smith thinks is even more important for creating a wealthy nation, is to interact and have open trade with different countries. Fiero states,“It is necessary, though very slow and gradual, consequence of a certain propensity in human nature which has in view no such extensive utility; the propensity to truck, barter,
Constantine the Great or Constantine I was the emperor of Rome from 306 to 337 AD. He was born Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus May 22, 337 AD. In Naissus, Moesia Superior (present-day Serbia). He was the first emperor of Rome to be Christian. “And thus by this wholesome counsel and most upright provision we thought to arrange that no one whatsoever should be denied the opportunity to give his heart to the observance of the Christian religion, of that religion which he should think best for himself, so that the Supreme Deity, to whose worship we freely yield our hearts may show in all things His usual favor and benevolence”. He was declared emperor a series of civil wars against the emperors Maxentius and Licinius. He gained control of the east and the west. He is important because of his history with the church and also because he founded the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine Empires capital would later be named Constantinople after Constantine. Constantine is very import to the church because he helped spread Christianity throughout much of Rome. In his early years C...
Speaking about the film by Baz Luhrmann “Australia”, I cannot but mention the importance of the film-form of it. This epic historical film "Autralia" combines the genres of drama, war, westerns and adventure. The film has such a beautiful attraction, thanks to the magnificent landscapes of Australia, against which events unfold, as well as by the desire to win the director's success with the audience.
Upon the death of his father and Galerius, the two Roman emperors at the time (approx. 315 CE), Constantine considered himself the new leader of Rome, even though Galerius had attributed Lucinius as ruler of the east. Maxentius opposed Constantine, and a battle would ensue to determine the ruler. Constantine defeated Maxentius, and his adoption of Christianity happened leading up to the battle. Eusebius of Caesarea wrote that Constantine saw a burning cross with the words “In this sign thou shalt conquer,” (Constantine I).
Constantine went far beyond the Edict of Milan, which extended indulgence of Christians during the persecution. By 313 A.D., Constantine had donated the property of Lateran, where a new cathedral, the Basilica Constantiniana was soon built, to the bishop of Rome. Constantine had an arch erected in his honour at Rome after the defeat of Maxentius ascribed the victory to the “inspiration of the Divinity”. After his victory over Licinius in 324, Constantine wrote that he had come from the farthest shores of Britain as God’s chosen instrument for the suppression of impiety. Later, in a letter he proclaimed that he had come to bring peace and prosperity to all lands, with the help of God. He gave vast amounts of money from his own personal treasury to the churches of God, to help enlarge the sacred buildings and to decorate the sanctuaries. Throughout his life, Constantine ascribed his success to his conversion to Christianity and the support of the Christian
It was a sunny beautiful day on the December 7, 1941, when citizens of the society were waking up to do their regular chores. This is the day that everyone will remember in the history of the world. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan happened in the early morning. The Americans were caught off guard by the Japanese fleet. The attack resulted in an outburst of horrifying deaths among Americans, including the loss of war fleets from the naval base. Resulting in Americans entering World War II, although they did not want to engage in World War II. “The “day that will live in infamy” ended with the deaths of over 2,400 sailors, Marines, and soldiers, along with the heavy damage and destruction of eight battleships.”1 After the devastating destruction on
Constantine was the first Roman emperor to stop Christian persecutions and unjust done over the past years and took the step to legalize Christianity along with all other religions and cults in the Roman Empire, setting peace treaties and laws that preferred individual rights to worship and follow their own religion (Carroll, 2002).
Constantine was the new emperor after the death of his father. When he went to battle against Maxentius, he saw a vision and “took the God of Christians.”
Comfort measures are crucial for the dying patient and their loved ones. Comfort measures, not only, include pain management but also massage, music, position changes, and heat, which are all just as important. Palliative care is an extremely important aspect of nursing. Palliative care “focuses more broadly on improving life and providing comfort to people of all ages with serious, chronic, and life-threatening illnesses” (http://www.WebMD.com). The ultimate goal of comfort measures and palliative care is to ensure that the patient has a more relaxed and peaceful death (End of Life care: An Ethical Overview, 16). Other important aspects of palliative care consists of hygiene measures, which includes keeping the patient dry and clean, offering food and fluids often, and keeping the patient, along with the family, as comfortable as possible. Some try to argue that drugs, like Morphine, should not be given to the dying because it speeds up the dying process, but I believe that their death is inevitable and it is best to make the patient as comfortable as possible. For many families, the thought of losing their family member is too much to handle but with pain management, at least, the patient gets to die a relatively pain-free death. This can be comforting for the family. Although, there are pain medications that can suppress the respiratory and cardiovascular system, the patient, typically, has a much more peaceful death, as opposed to not having any sort of drug.
The end-of-life nurse’s primary objective is to provide comfort and compassion to patients and their families during an extremely difficult time. They must satisfy all “physical, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual needs” of the patient and their family. (Wu & Volker, 2012) The nurse involves their patient in care planning, as well as educating them about the options available. They must follow the wishes of the patient and their family, as provided in the patient’s advance directive if there is one available. It is i...
