Comparing the Operations of the Atkins and South Beach Diets

In today’s society, an ongoing trend of diets have played a major impact in the nutritional and dieting markets such as the Atkins and South Beach. Both diets may be considered similar since they were both designed and intended for dieters to produce similar results of dramatic rapid weight loss within stages. Though the end result may be similar, the method of achieving the weight loss differs in many aspects. Both the Atkins and South Beach diets, varies in the choice of foods consumed by the dieter and the step by step process on how the diet operates.

In the Atkins diet, it involves eating foods which are high in protein and fat, while limiting the amount of foods which are high in carbohydrates or foods which normally tends to raise blood sugar. The Atkins diet aims to eliminate the simple carbohydrate consumption such as rice, alcohol, white flour, and sugar since they are found to contain low amounts of fiber, therefore causing the dieter to consume large sums of calories and a desire to eat more carbohydrates. As a result, the Atkins encourages dieters to consume high-fat, high-animal protein foods such as bacon, sausage, butter, steaks, eggs, and cheese. With the replacement of carbohydrates for high-fat and high-protein foods, weight loss can be achieved since the Atkins diet works on the principle of ketosis: a process by which excess body fat is burned as fuel, resulting in a rapid weight reduction. Although both diets may produce similar results of dramatic weight loss within the two week initiation phase that radically restricts carbohydrates, the initiation phase of the South Beach differs from the Atkins diet in two significant ways: under South Beach, “good” carbohydrates are not discouraged, and “bad” fat are. However, with Atkins, dieters are encouraged to cut out all carbohydrates: good, bad, or indifferent. Dieters are also permitted in the Atkins diet to eat unlimited amounts of proteins and saturated fat. The key difference between these two diets is that the South Beach diet does not require the exclusion of carbohydrates, but only a change in the type of carbohydrates consumed.

Essay on Comparing and Contrasting the Atkins and South Beach

- Comparing and Contrasting the Atkins and South Beach Diets The weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar machine, perpetually fueled by not only new information, but also data that have remained true for decades. Although it is unsurprising that the human body will lose weight when it expends more calories than it consumes, new findings lead to several alternative diets and weight loss methods that gain much more popularity than the basic concept of eating less and exercising more. For several decades, the Mayo Clinic diet, which was never actually invented or been approved by the true Mayo Clinic, has been used by dieters as a way to quickly lose body fat....   [tags: Comparison Compare Contrast Essays]

- Comparing and Contrasting the Atkins and South Beach Diets The Atkins and South Beach diets appear to be the same, but they do have their differences. They both suggest that limiting carbohydrates in ones. meals is a successful way to lose weight. Each diet also consists of a series of phases where carb intake can gradually increase. Although these correlations between the two diets make them difficult to be distinguished, they are in fact quite dissimilar. Whereas the Atkins diet allows consumption of all fats and hardly any carbs, the South Beach diet permits certain carbs and does not allow just any fat product....   [tags: Comparison Compare Contrast Essays]

Essay about Atkins and South Beach Diet Approaches

- Atkins and South Beach Diet Approaches The Atkins and the South Beach diets offer different approaches to reducing insulin response levels. The Structural Differences of Atkins and South Beach Diets Essay

- The Structural Differences of Atkins and South Beach Diets The Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet are both regimens that promote weight loss by increasing the intake of proteins while reducing the consumption of carbohydrates. While often grouped together under the “low-carb fad diet” label, these two diets are comparable in design, but contrasting in detail, in particular during phase one. At first glance, these diets appear to be structured alike. Both diets begin with an induction phase that lasts for at least two weeks in which every meal consists of protein rich foods (such as eggs for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch, and steak for dinner), a lot of vegetables and salads, and...   [tags: Health Nutrition Diet Exercise Essays]
