The Sony Ericsson Merge
What are merges and why do they happen?
A merge is when two companies become one and combine clients, assets,
and debts. There are several different types of merges including
horizontal, vertical, backward vertical and lateral merges. 3. A
horizontal merger is one where two businesses in exactly the same line
of business or stage of production merge with on another, for example
if two hairdressers joined together. A forward vertical merger is
where a business merges with a business at the next stage of the
production process, for example a business making furniture may merge
with the retail outlet selling the furniture. Backward vertical merger
is where a business merges with a business at the previous stage of
the production process, for example the business making the furniture
may merge with the business that supplies the wood and parts for the
furniture. A lateral merger is where a business merges with a business
who makes similar goods to it but who are not in competition with each
other, for example if a chocolate bar manufacturer merged with a
luxury chocolate manufacturer. Corporate mergers occur when two
companies combine. In some cases both companies want to merge. This is
called an agreed merger. Another situation is where one company seeks
to control another without its agreement. This is called a hostile
takeover. To avoid a hostile takeover the target company may seek a
'white knight', another company with which it would prefer to merge.
It is up to the shareholders of the target company to approve a
merger. They will usually do so if the board recommends it, or if they

a major market share they will need to be conscious of other merges
that could potentially happen between other brands, an example could
be between Siemens and Samsung, with Siemens needing to gain market
share, and Samsung needing to regain their own, it could be very
profitable for both companies.

iPhones are the most popular smartphones out there besides Samsung Galaxy, HTC One, and Nokia. The Apple Company first announced the first iPhone on July 9th 2007 sales begin just 18 days later on July 27th 2007. Steve Jobs was the one who invented the iPhone (Zigmond, 2013). Even after Steve Jobs passed away, people still make and sell the iPhone because they still love and enjoy the iPhone.
Two different phenomena are described by the term merger and acquisition. A merger is a combination of two corporations in which only one survives and the merged corporation goes out of existence. It is a unification of two or more firms into a new one and thus characteri-zed by the fact that after unification there are fewer firms than before. On the contrary can the target firm after an acquisition either remain autonomous or be partially and/or wholly integrated into the new parent company. However, from a legal point of view the firms remain independent entities.
Shortly after the apple iphone 6 Plus was released on September 19, records of the tool bending when placed in a pocket started to surface. One individual, for instance, stated small bending after the apple iphone was in a pocket for about 18 hours, and after that, several various other reports dripped in.
(i) Product Extension: In this type of mergers, firms that sell non-competing products and use related marketing channels of production processes merge.
Mergers is when two firms or entities, often of about the same size, agree to become one single new entity or organization rather than remain separately owned and/or operated. This kind of action is often referred to as a ‘merger of equals’. Financially, the stocks of both companies are migrated into a new stock with the new name of the company issued. (CIPD, 2009)
The iPhone 5s is currently one of the best smart phones in the market and the flagship phone for Apple, Inc. The iPhone 5s, which is a successor of the iPhone 5 was released in September 2014. The iPhone 5s still has several identical features with its predecessor the iPhone 5 such as body dimensions and display size, but offer its users features that are considered revolutionary. Some of the obvious improvements brought about by the iPhone 5s is the upgrading of the iSight camera to a larger f2.2 aperture and a larger image sensor. These upgrades are supported with advanced imagery processing software which is geared to enhance the ability of the phone to capture and produce quality videos and pictures (Baldwin, 2013).
Mergers, acquisitions, takeovers and joint ventures are members of the amalgamation family. One reason that companies often choose to expand is to merge with another company, to take over another company, or form a new company altogether (JV) .A merger is where two companies come together as one company – may be with a new name of the parent company, losing their independent identities. A takeover means that one company buys out the other company. And joint venture is when a new company is born with the parent companies in existence. Amalgamation is the merger of two or more companies with another existing company, or the merger of two or more companies to form a new company. In India, amalgamation as per the Co...
Mergers among companies is not a new concept, in fact, this concept has been used since the 1980s. There are a few reasons that companies decide to merge. A merge can increase the performance which produces a stronger company. A stronger workforce is the dream of all companies. Companies love the idea that they are able to produce a product in half the time. Diversification is another reason companies like mergers. A company that merges to diversify may acquire another company in a seemingly unrelated industry in order to reduce the impact of a particular industry's performance on its profitability. Companies seeking to sharpen focus often merge with companies that have deeper market penetration in a key area of

Smartphone usage continues to soar as more and more users rely on their devices to perform routine tasks. This lets law enforcement agencies use location services to learn more about criminal activities; in addition, if you were injured, your cell phone would be able to automatically report your location to authorities. However, not all companies track their users for the sole person of bettering the greater good. Major technology companies such as Apple, Google, and Android take advantage of all those using their phones to stay connected and “on the grid”. The Web grid lets these companies track your routine activities so they can sell the analyzed information back to advertisers who will then customize their advertisements to target you specifically. In 2011, The Wall Street Journal discovered that Apple and Google were collecting personal and private location data on their iPhones or Android users. While Apple transmits your location back to central services every 12 hours, Google is capable of transmitting your location and
In today’s society, smartphones have inevitably taken cellular phone sales by storm. Flip phones and home phones, with the classic 9 number keyboards, are being replaced with touch screens that allow for more interactive and advanced phones. The Apple iPhone and the Google Android are two examples of how technology is advancing the way we communicate. These smartphones, backed by each company’s unique business models, have changed the way cellular devices are used and sold.
Upon the acquisition and merger of legacy AT&T Wireless by Cingular Wireless and the solidification of SBC, BellSouth and Cingular Wireless, the New AT&T mobility business unit now leads in the current market share narrowly over Verizon Wireless.
The topic of mergers and acquisitions has been increasingly investigated in the literature in the last two decades (Appelbaum et al., 2007) in response to the rise in M&A activities as well as the increasing complexity of such transactions themselves(Gaughan, 2002). With the purpose of setting an M&A context for the thesis topic, we will explore M&A activities in terms of its definition and classification, motivations, post-merger integration.
