In Voltaire's Candide, many of the characters share the uncanny ability to go through difficult situations and survive. Some of them are even killed, only to return in the next chapter healthier than ever. In many cases, they narrowly escape death due to the help of a friend who bails them out and asks for nothing in return. After so many close calls, one can't help but speculate if a higher power is in control of their fates, or possibly their survival is solely due to luck.
In the first chapter, Candide is caught kissing Cunegonde by her father, the Baron, who banishes him from the castle. He walks to an inn where he is recruited into the Bulgarian army by two large soldiers who lead him to the camp where his "training" begins. His training consists of regular beatings, so Candide decides to leave the army. Candide’s initial encounter with this condition comes in the form of “… a beggar who was covered with pustules, his eyes were sunken, the end of his nose rotted off, his mouth twisted, his teeth black, he had a croaking voice and a hacking cough, and spat a tooth every time he tried to speak.” (105) With wickedly cynic humor, Voltaire reveals to us that this beggar is the perennially optimistic Pangloss. Not recognizing him, Candide gives the beggar money. Pangloss gratefully falls on Candide, who recoils in horror and wonders what happened. Yet his question regarding Pangloss’ fate, without waiting for an answer, is quickly followed by questions about Cunégonde. Candide’s reaction, unlike that of the Buddha, betrays that he remains fixated on the bloom of his desired Cunégonde. Candide faces more infirmities throughout his story, including that of the old woman who is missing a buttock due to cannibalism (118), and the disfigured slave who bleakly tells him that “If we catch a finger in the sugar mill where we work, they cut off our hand; if we try to run away, they cut off our leg: I have undergone both these experiences. This is the price of the sugar you eat in Europe.” (131) Here Voltaire reveals to the reader Candide’s empathy as he weeps for this complete
Candide is outlined to be excessively trustworthy in everything he is disclosed to, and thus, childlike. After Candide is kicked out of his castle, he is approached by two soldiers who ask him if he “has great affection for the King of Bulgarians”, and when Candide replies that he doesn't know of the King, the two soldiers invite Candid to “drink to [ the king’s] health”.As Candide joins them and drinks to a king he has never known “with all his heart”, he demonstrates lack of independence for himself. Candid finds himself at the first of his woes when he enters a tavern in the town of Waldberghofftrarbk-dikdorff. He is coaxed into going to a camp by mean of a meal. In the camp he is captured and forced to fight for the Bulgarian army. He attempts to escape but is caught and is forced to run the gauntlet. He then tries escaping again in the heat of battle and succeeds.
One of the main female characters of this story is Cunégonde, the love interest of Candide, whose life did a complete 180 turn around. When we first find Cunégonde we see that she lives a lavish life with her family. We see her life turn around when her house is burned down, and her family murdered. Cunégonde herself is raped and sold to a man known as Don Issachar. She is then forced to be shared with another man known as The Grand Inquisitor. Although Cunégonde is a victim in the beginning, she retains her strong character, and after Candide slays the two men, she quickly seizes the opportunity to leaves with Candide and the old woman. To live is to experience the good and bad. For our characters in Candide, their experiences are largely negative. As the novel progresses we see through the eyes of Candide that everyone suffers, as noted by the old woman, "Just for fun, why not get each passenger to tell you the story of his life, and if there is one single one of them who hasn’t often cursed the day he was born and hasn’t often said to the himself that he was the most unfortunate man alive, then you can throw me into the sea head first." As Candide goes on his journey throughout the novel in search of Cunegonde the words of the old woman are confirmed by the tales of the injured slave outside of Surinam, the crowd of applicants within the city, Martin, the man of learning in France, Paquette, Brother Biroflee and the six kings. The words of the old woman to Candide directly show the connection between suffering and how it is unique to life. "This ridiculous weakness for living is perhaps one of our most fatal tendencies. For can anything be sillier than to insist on carrying a burden one would continually much rather throw to the ground? Sillier than to feel disgust at one’s own existence and yet cling to it? Sillier, in short, than to clasp to our bosom the serpent that devours us until it has gnawed away our heart?" Bearing and holding on to that suffering is holding on to that which makes us human.
Voltaire's Candide is a novel which contains conceptual ideas and at the same time is also exaggerated. Voltaire offers sad themes disguised by jokes and witticism, and the story itself presents a distinctive outlook on life. The crucial contrast in the story deals with irrational ideas as taught to Candide about being optimistic, versus reality as viewed by the rest of the world.
Candide is a person of privilege who began life in the Castle of Westphalia. While a part of the castle-life, Candide was taught by Dr. Pangloss. Pangloss is a philosopher who teaches there is a cause for all things and that everything is all for the good, even though a person may not understand it at the time. Suddenly, however, Candide is exiled from the privileged confines of the castle when he is caught kissing Cunegonde, the daughter of the Baron. Upon his exile Candide immediately begins to face adversities. Candide finds himself in the army simply because he is the right size. His life in the army is nothing but turmoil and hardship. Despite the misfortunes of army life, Candide continues to believe there is a cause and effect for all things.
Candide's misfortune begins when he is kicked out of the castle and experiences a series of horrible events. Candide is unable to see anything positive in his ordeals, contrary to Dr. Pangloss' teachings that there is a cause for all effects and that, though we might not understand it, everything is all for the good. Candide's endless trials begin when he is forced into the army simply because he is the right height, five feet five inches. In the army he is subjected to endless drills and humiliations and is almost beaten to death. Candide escapes and, after being degraded by good Christians for being an anti-Christ, meets a diseased beggar who turns out to be Dr. Pangloss. Dr. Pangloss informs him that Bulgarian soldiers attacked the castle of Westfalia and killed Cunegonde - more misery!
Voltaire’s Candide portrays an exaggerated image of human cruelty and suffering in the world. Specifically, Voltaire criticizes people’s lack of willingness to prevent suffering, and their tendency to accept the idea that there is nothing anyone can do about human outcomes. He upholds his belief that practical ways of solving problems generate improvement. He believes that human indifference and inaction cause suffering to carry on. Voltaire’s believes that naïve optimism, absolute pessimism, cruel indifference, and lack of reason hinder positive and constructive change.
Candide is a representation of the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment was an era of change, the way people think changed, scientific ideas changed along with many other beliefs. Voltaire was an Enlightenment philosopher that changed the meaning of the word optimism, wrote many books to spread new ideas throughout the area. Candide is about a man that lives during the Enlightenment, as he travels and lives through the Enlightenment he realizes that the world should be changing. when Jacques drowns Candide’s response is why was it you of all men, men that shouldn’t have drowned in the very harbor. Candide says this after Pangloss is hanged “If this is the best of possible worlds, what then are others?” Candide is thinking about the world he lives
Finally Voltaire uses distortion though the human nature that the characters displays. For example every character that Candide comes across seems to have the worst luck as they tell Candide their stories of misfortunates. However the Old Woman says “‘I should like to know which is worse: to be raped a hundred times by negro pirates, and have a buttock cut off, and run the gauntlet of the Bulgars, and be flogged and hanged in an auto-da-fe, and be dissected, and have to row in a galley – in short, to undergo all the miseries we have each of us suffered or simply to sit here and do nothing?’” (91). This exhibits that both are bad but the fact that having all these bad things happen to you and doing nothing about it is even worst. This trend of people witnessing bad things happen and not doing anything about it is a theme throughout the book.
In the novel Candide written by Voltaire there are several symbols throughout the story. One of those symbolic figures that seems to stand out in the story is the character Candide, a gullible and innocent boy who experiences many hardships after being vanished from the castle of the baron von Thunder-ten-tronckh. Candide seems to be a representation of people's innocence and how they tend to lose it throughout their lifetime as they witness and experience new things in the world and grow wary of the consequences that every different situation may hold. For example, Voltaire mentions in the beginning of the story that “nature had bestowed upon [Candide] the gentlest of dispositions. His countenance expressed his soul” which shows to the reader that Candide is kind and innocent at the beginning and that he has not the slightest intentions of interfering with another persons life in a negative manner (3). However, later on in the story after Candide has killed Don Issachar and the Grand Inquisitor, Candide justifies his murderous behavior to Cunegonde by saying that “when you are in love, and jealous, and have been flogged by the inquisition, there is no knowing what you may do” which demonstrates that the gentle and kind Candide has turned into a murderer as a result of his previous life experiences which in turn provides an excellent example of how people lose their innocence and turn to violence overtime (22).

Candide is born in westphalia, germany, and lives under the rule of a Baron. His tutor, Pangloss, teaches him that their world is the “best of all possible worlds”, and everything that occurs in this world is for the best. Candide accepts Pangloss’s teachings as absolute truth. Candide forms a relationship with his baron's daughter, Cunegonde, and one night they kiss. The baron sees the two kiss and immediately banishes Candide from his home. Candide eventually finds himself in the military after his banishment and is treated cruelly. he is beaten and nearly executed, but manages to escape off to holland. In holland, Candide finds care from an anabaptist named, jacques, who provides him with shelter and food. Candide then runs into his old tutor, Pangloss, who is now a diseased beggar. Pangloss tells Candide that Cunegonde and the baron, along with the rest of the family had been slain by the very army he deserted. Candide does not let the horrible news get to him, and Jacques takes Pangloss under his wing. Once Pangloss recovered, the three sailed to Lisbon, losing Jacques on the way to a hurricane. The two arrive in lisbon to see it had been leveled by an earthquake, and under the control of the catholic inquisition. Pangloss makes the fatal flaw of upsetting an inquisitor with his philosophy and is hanged for heresy, while Candide is brutally beaten for supporting. Afterwards, an old woman helps dress and tend to Candidates wounds. Candide is then taken by the women to the supposedly dead Cunegonde who instead of being killed like the rest of her family, was sold as a sex slave. Candide eventually kills her two owners and along with the old woman, they take a ship to south america and on the way the old woman reveals herself to be the daughter of the pope, and how she was abused and neglected because of it.
