The Language of Performing Arts
When I initially decided to embark on the Performing Studies course I
knew that it would involve studying the three different disciplines,
Dance, Drama and Music. However I presumed that they would be taught
separately. Although we began by learning about each area individually
they were soon combined in order for us to create our own mini
project. The aim of the mini project was to demonstrate our new found
knowledge and ability in relation to Performance Studies.
In drama our theme revolved around 'The Fall of the House of Usher' by
Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). We also studied Stanislavski's system as
he was our chosen practitioner for drama. Stanislavski invented
"method acting" if an actor uses Stanislavski system they would tune
into a past emotion experience to represent a naturalist effect on
stage. We began by reading the story, we then brain stormed ideas,
picked and allocated characters. My character was a normal young girl
of about 17 who was staying in a house with her friends, but was
scared of being alone. I chose to be this character because I thought
I could relate to her and was able to express her emotions, as I was
of a similar age and same gender. I attempted to remember particular
emotions I had felt when first going away without my family. I then
used these feels and emotions and incorporated them into our piece. We
started an improvisation, rehearsed over it and then selected the bits
that worked and rejected the pieces that didn't. We chose to perform
our piece in silence, we didn't want to use dialogue but rather focus
on our body language, our proxemics, our relationship to ...

someone tells you a basic story and you continue from there, but when
you have to do all the work yourself, it is a lot harder. I find that
you have to spend a lot of time working and perfecting the performance
and concentrating in order to get it exactly how you want it. I spoke
to some of the audience prior to the performance and quizzed them on
their views and opinions. Most people said it was really effective and
it worked well. People seemed to like the fact that we used a dance to
represent the crash. Some of the audience said that the music we used
worked and went with the performance; they said that it was moving
towards the end when everyone was giving their story of what they had
seen. Overall I am happy with what the audience said and how they
thought it worked well.

During a musical performance many elements to be looked are not easily recognized by the average critic. A musical performance has multiple interactions taking place between the music, text, performers, audience, and space that all can contribute to a great performance. Overwhelming majority of the audience does not realize so much can be looked at during a single performance. At a performance by the University of Maryland Marching Band I was able to analyze the Musical Sound, Contexts of the Performance, and Interpretation of the Performance.
When I first read about Marina Abramovic, I found her performance art can be both shocking and hold the attention of one. Her work ranges in physical intensity, emotional exposure, and sadness. Marina Abramovic work is about self abuse, self discipline, and unreasonable punishment and great courage. Through the conditions she puts herself and her audience in her performance. In my opinion, I feel Marina Abramovic and my main goal as an artist is not only to completely change the way art is seen by the public, but to push the performance the same line as fine art.
understand her beliefs to a greater extent because I was able to see where she was
The signs you pass on the street are in English, the books your teachers give you are in English; everything we do has some sort of English surrounding it. In music the same is true about the staves, every musical thing you do is related to the Treble or Bass Clefs. If we need to read English to walk down the right street the same should be true for needing to read the music staves to be able to play an instrument correctly. English is required in all American schools but reading the staves, even though they are essential elements, are not. If music teachers required musical literacy as strictly as English was by the English teachers our musicians would be greatly improved. Musical Literacy should be a goal that all music teachers have for their students.
Pop. Traditional. Classical. These are all genres of music. These all serve a purpose. These are all important. Pop music has been used to help inform and motivate the general public during movements like environmental protection and gay rights. Traditional music has helped to guide us by telling us stories of the past from the church to the fields. Classical music has been played for royalty and help dancers spin a story. Some can be considered art while others can’t, but it often differs because the definition of art is in constant motion. The definition of art is a subject philosopher’s debate because it can be defined strictly or loosely. For the purpose of this essay, let art be defined as anything that can be touched or heard, and it causes a mental and physical reaction. Classical music is truly an art form because it invokes a mental and physical reaction from both the audience and the performers, and it has contrast to make it more dynamic.
The rate of her voice kept my interest because depending on the question she was answering her voiced seemed to rise and the emotion through her voice was clearly depicted
Theatre-In-Education The theatre education industry/movement has seen some rapid changes since its initial developments and establishment in the 1960’s. However its origins mainly lie in the early years of the last century. It was the initial establishment of companies such as Bertha Waddell’s in Scotland and Esme Church’s in the north of England that thoroughly established the main roots of TIE.
Theatre serves to reflect society. From Shakespeare to Sophocles, a playwright’s work illustrates the different mechanics within a culture or time period or society. Theatre offers viewers the experience of taking a step back and looking in on themselves. In this way, theatre is a mirror for the world and the way it functions.
Actors are more than just people who portray dramatic characters on a movie screen, stage, and television. Professional actors tend to make more money than most other careers. Actors bring joy to the people who watch them perform, and take them out of the real world and into the creative world of visual communication. Performers can show more than just joy, they can also bring happiness, sorrow, fear and even comedy. Acting can be a very versatile profession. It is way for many people to refine themselves. Performing is not only about getting into a role but understanding the extent of one’s imagination. There is a lot of preparing that goes into a performance than just reading a few lines. Acting is a paradigm. Acting is very different now compared to when it first started. In todays world acting is a fast growing career and well respected. but over 200 years ago it was not that way.
A question that has pondered for a myriad of years: how does one develop the vision of choreography in the mind and transfer it to human bodies? Choreographers try to explain this question through the pieces that they develop over the years. Their pieces “must be part of an organic whole, supporting the story, characters, and the overall artistic intent” (AACT). The Encyclopedia of Britannica defines choreography as “an art of creating and arranging dances”. The word is derived from the Greek words to “dance” and “write”. Modern day choreographers were asked to define the choreography in one word like the ancient Greeks derived it from. The words that they described choreography as were: art, movement, creativity, planning, and expressions
Societies consist of several diverse elements, which are significant in the advancement of social notions. One of those key elements is media. In today’s society we approach countless varieties of media that are constantly influencing the way individuals live their lives. Consuming media on a daily basis has an immense effect on the way people view things within society. A source of media that tends to dominate our daily lives is music. Music is currently presented within every aspect of our lives and has become a commodity more than a cultural aspect. It is existent in every occasion with a variety of genres. It has now become available everywhere at any time of day. With music being such a big commodity in today’s society, popular music developed. Popular music is based upon what is appealing to most individuals throughout society, which is determined by a scale of activity such as music charts. It is considered as a key cultural expression that highlights the attitudes of personalities (Joan Serrà, 2012).
“Dance, the art of precise, expressive, and graceful human movement, traditionally, but not necessarily, performed in accord with musical accompaniment. Dancing developed as a natural expression of united feeling and action.”
As I said before, we get to know her from the inside, meaning that we can read her thoughts, know why she does what she does.
