first settlers arrived in America. Their dreams were to make their
fortune in the gold fields in the land of opportunity. However for
many of them the dream became a nightmare. "Of Mice and Men", written
by John Steinbeck is set in 1930 in California, when the American
people were suffering from a great recession. During those times which
are known as "Great Depression", the price of farm crops fall
calamitously because of the economic effects of the First World War.
Many people felt as if they were being strangled by the disaster of
being jobless. The crash in the stock market made things even worse.
Many independent farmers lost their farms because they were not able
to pay their debts to the banks. Therefore numerous workers swarmed
towards the prosperous states of California to escape from the horror
of starving, the pinch of indigence and in the hope of better life and
work. Many American workers, especially farmers, believed that the
only way to success was to buy land in California.

Dreams are the significant theme in Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men". The

dream. They accepted the hard toil and labour to fructify it. They

Of Mice and Men was a book written by John Steinbeck. The book took place in the Great Depression era. The people were poor and jobless it was hard for the people to make money during this time. When Lennie and George encounter Slim, another ranch hand, they automatically respect him and react positively towards him. “This was Slim, the jerkline skinner. His hatchet face was ageless. He might have been thirty-five or fifty. His ear heard more than was said to him, and his slow speech had overtones not of thought, but of understanding beyond thought. His hands, large and lean, were as delicate in their action as those of a temple dancer.” (Steinbeck, 33-34) Slim is the noblest of the ranch as the only character who seems to be at peace with his circumstances and his life. The other characters view slim as wise and respectable man and often go to him for guidance, as the only person who has achieved what he wants in life.

Most of the characters in the book want to have something of their own to be happy but most of their dreams are never fulfilled because of different factors. Even Crooks the stable buck knew that dreams are never really attainable. After lennie tells crooks about the land crooks says “Ever’body wants a little piece of lan’... and nobody gets no land”(pg 74). Crooks who as seen many men with the same dreams as george knew it was never really attainable.

John Steinbeck, popular American author, became interested in literature due to the influence of the novel Le Morte d’Arthur. Steinbeck decided that he wanted to be a writer in high school because of the book. He would often write stories and read them to his friends. In 1925, Steinbeck worked in construction and as a reporter, which helped him gain ideas for his first novel. After working those two jobs, he settled down and started writing serious fiction in California. Steinbeck wrote about the labor issues and other issues he saw in the United States of America. This lead to the first play-novelette he wrote, Of Mice and Men. He considered it be an experiment. Originally Steinbeck wanted to make it a play as well but it failed.
