Cures, Medication and Procedures of Detecting Glaucoma
In the next several pages will be explained the
cures, medication, and procedure of detecting glaucoma.
The reasons this was wrote on glaucoma, was because I have
always wondered why these few people that have glaucoma get
to use a illegal drug(marijuana). I also was curious on what
glaucoma exactly is and when it could effect me, or any of
my family members.
Glaucoma is a disease that effects your vision or optic
nerves. Most people do not know that they have it until its
to late to properly treat it. Glaucoma does not usually
effect young children. It doesn't even usually effect the
ages twelve through twenty. Around the age of twenty one is
when you should go and get your first check up. Many people
do not get yearly check ups and that's how it gets out of
control. Glaucoma effects only 2% of the population. If
people over the age of 21 would go and get themselves
checked then most people would not have to deal with
the major effect which is blindness. Yet many people fail to
understand the importance of getting checked. You can get
checked by any optimist, all you have to do is call them and
set up an appointment.
What is glaucoma, you might be asking your self. Well as
you know glaucoma is a disease that effects your optic
nerves, or in other words your vision. The eye is a round
looking figure filled with fluid. When the fluid in the eye
increases, so does the pressure. The body's normal approach
to increase of pressure is a small opening in the anterior
chamber, in the bottom. When glaucoma forms, the opening in
the angle will not open so the pressure wil...

...ng and came up with that THC
lowers the IOP, a lot more than normal treatments. One
patient had a reduction from 40mmhg to 10mmhg in one eye and
35mmhg to 15mmhg in the other eye. What needs to be
determined is if eating or smoking marijuana lowers pressure
the most. It also needs to be determined if there is a safer
way, such as a inhaler. Before using this treatment you
should consider other treatments and relate your blood
pressure and IOP measuring because tolerance is a
development. After reviewing this paper a decision was made,
if I ever developed glaucoma I would use eye drops as a
treatment, for a few reasons. One is because it is the
safest of all treatments and second it is the simplest.
My next option would be to smoke or eat marijuana because it
is known that it is a effective way to treat glaucoma.
Myopia is defined as nearsightedness, which exists when the refractive elements of the eye (cornea and lens) place the image in front of the retina. The myopic condition is common in infants but generally levels off to normal vision as the infant ages (Vander & Gault, 1998). Myopia occurs in about 25% of the adult U.S. population. Many adults use corrective lenses or contacts to correct their myopic vision to 20/20 vision (Drexler et al., 1998). Many people find contacts or glasses hindering in their personal and/or professional lifestyle. For example, military pilots cannot wear glasses while flying and some firemen may find glasses too dangerous to wear during a rescue attempt. There is refractive surgery available to correct myopic eyes, like Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK). Why do people have myopia, what can be done to correct myopia, and what are the results of corrective surgical procedures? These are a few questions that will be addressed and analyzed.
There are all different types of medical and disable human beings out in this world. There are also different types of disabilities such as a physical or mental condition that limits a person 's movements, senses, or activities. I choose a sensory impairment, Diabetic Retinopathy which is one of the types of visual impairments that people may happen to get. You also have four other types of visual impairments, cataracts, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and retrolental fibroplasia that you can also get. Diabetic Retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affect the eyes.
The eye is an important sensory organ for vision which houses a sensitive optical apparatus in a relatively isolated tissue compartment. Eye is essentially made of three layers: (1) sclera, (2) uveal tract, and (3) retina with each of these layers performing intricate duties which ensure proper functioning of the eye.
Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetic disorder that causes blindness in the people that are affected by it. I chose retinitis pigmentosa because my grandmother has this genetic disorder. The disorder is very costly on those who have it. The disorder has robbed my grandmother of the life she wanted. She is no longer able to do the things she once was. She is legally blind, cannot drive, and has trouble getting around crowded areas. Retinitis pigmentosa was discovered by Doctor Donders in 1857. Retinitis pigmentosa is a very serious disorder in how it occurs, its signs and symptoms, its prevalence, and how its treated.
Delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol can reduce high blood pressure in the arteries. The arteries are vessels that carry out blood from the heart. Prove by a few scientists, THC could reduce of high blood pressure. Most of the scientists still don’t recommend this. Delta 9 THC can also cause weight loss. Scientists want to make this chemical to treat diabetes. It also lowers cholesterol in the blood stream. Scientists also found that it has an impact on insulin. Insulin is a hormone that controls blood sugar levels. Scientist found that THC increases the sensitivity in insulin and also protecting the cells that produce insulin. THC is also use for patients who have cancer. It makes them fight for vomiting and nausea symptoms. It reduces the onset of neuropathy in patients who suffer from that condition. THC can have effects on men, it can cause changes to the structure of the sperm. THC can cause sterility on men. THC can be used to treat and prevent the eye disease. Glaucoma is when it increased pressure in the eye ball damaging the optic nerve which causes the loss of vision. When you consumed THC the pressure of the eyeball decrease into the regular pressure. According to a research, scientists have seen that THC can improve the capacity of
According to Baily and Hall, while visual impairment early in life is associated with inherited congenital disorders, abnormal fetal devepment, and problems associated with premature birth, most eye conditions are associated with aging. They claim that over 70% of the visually impaired population in the United States is over 65. Age related maculopathy, also called macular degeneration, or AMD, impairs the center of vision in older individuals. The macula is the region in the back of the retina that surrounds and includes the fovea (Goldstein 1999). It is important to understand that when this degeneration progresses enough, the condition constitutes blindness because the foveal area is what is used to focus on something. Most cases do not progress this far, but between five and 20% do. Allikments and Shroyer claim that 11 million people in the United States alone suffer some degree of this impairment, with 75% of those individuals being 75 or older. Seven percent of this older age group reportedly suffer advanced forms. Freidman reports the disease as most common in developed countries.
1. Open angel glaucoma is where the eye has a clog. This causes the fluid of the eye to drain more slowly and makes the pressure in the eye go up. It damages the optic nerve over time. Since it is damaging the nerve you start to develop blind spots. You will start to lose the peripheral vision and there is no cure for open angle glaucoma. (Wachler 2017)
Retinal Detachment The retina is a thin membrane that lines the back of the eye. It is the part of the eye that lets you see. Retinal detachment is the separation of the retina from the back of the eye. Retinal detachment causes vision loss.
Glaucoma can occur in any age patient, therefore yearly screenings is necessary for all ages (Understanding and Living with Glaucoma , 2012). Patients who are at a higher risk for glaucoma include patients of African and Asian decent, patients over the age of 60 years, patients who are very myopic, or nearsighted, and patients who excessively use steroids (Understanding and Living with Glaucoma , 2012). There are two types of screenings for glaucoma (Understanding and Living with Glaucoma , 2012). They are tonometry and ophthalmoscopy (Understanding and Living with Glaucoma , 2012). In order to measure the intraocular pressure, IOP, the health care provider will use tonometry (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2013). Eye drops are used to numb the eye so that a tonometer can be used to measure the inner pressure within the eyen (Understanding and Living with Glaucoma , 2012). The normal range for patients with normal eye pressure ranges from 10-21 mm Hg (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2013). Patients with open-angle glaucoma have a pressure of 22 mm Hg, and with closed-angle the pressure reading is 30 mm Hg or higher (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2013). During ophthalmoscopy, eye drops are also used, but to dilate the pupil (Understanding and Living with Glaucoma , 2012). The health care provider can then examine the optic nerve for damage due to glaucoma (Understanding and Living with
Glaucoma is a degenerative eye disease that affects three million Americans, though only about half of them know it. The worst part is hat number continues to grow as the at-risk population continues to increase. Do you know if you are at risk of developing glaucoma? Knowing who is at risk for this terrible disease can help reduce the numbers affected.
The same is apprоved and suppоrted by variоus institutiоns including the Natiоnal Eye Institute. Proven research has cоnfirmed that either when marijuana is smоked оr when its active cоmpоnent is taken, the IОP levels are lоwer. Like any оther drug, there is оften many ways thrоugh which they can be administered intо the bоdy. Studies оn glaucоma treatment using marijuana fоund diverse ways thrоugh which patients’ cоuld receive the treatment. Due tо the beneficial effects of marijuana, the Fооd and Drug Administratiоn allоwed оphthalmоlоgists tо recоmmend marijuana fоr peоple when оther treatment methоds failed to wоrk fоr them (Stоlberg and Sheryl). Apart frоm smоking, there are three primary ways оf administering tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which include smoking, the under the tongue method, and eye drоp instillation (Jampel 75). THC is the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis Even thоugh all оf the three methоds have drawbacks, the оral and the under the tongue methоd avoids the adverse effects that marijuana smоke has оn the lungs. It means that all the three methоds are nоt practical treatment оptiоns cоnsidering that glaucоma is a permanent health cоnditiоn. Peоple whо push fоr the use оf marijuana in treatment nоrmally have fоur pоssible symptoms in mind that it may cоntrоl including glaucоma, nausea suppressiоn, reduce pain resulting frоm multiple sclerоsis and bооsting the appetite оf HIV/AIDS patients
Over the course of about a dozen weeks or so I have been exploring many facets of oppression. From literary work such as Malcolm X’s autobiography to Sherman Alexie’s novel The Absolute True Story of a Part-Time Indian, oppression is an issue for the majority of people who are not white, upper class males. Race, class, gender, sex, religion, all things that the 14th amendment are supposed to protect, seems to only stand for equality rather than enforcing it and educating people of it’s often damaging effects. Gender and sex roles seem to be the most relevant topic for the times, but also one of the hardest to understand. Cholly Breedlove is a prime example of male dominance in society. We know the how, so for now we’re going to focus on the why.
Therefore it helps the physician to determine why the patient’s vision is blurred and whether the treatment should be started. The advantages of this method are that it provides pictures with high resolution and it does not need much cooperation from the patients to remain without movement since it is very fast however it has some limitations because in this method the light waves are used for examination; the test cannot be successful if any object interfere with the light passing like Cataract (clouding of the lens of the eye) or hemorrhage in the gel center of the
6. There are also some medicinal uses of marijuana such as relieving nausea and pain. Some studies also indicate the possible relief of glaucoma.
