Symbolism in Cat in the Rain by Ernest Hemingway
In his short story Cat in the Rain, Ernest Hemingway uses imagery and
subtlety to convey to the reader that the relationship between the
American couple is in crisis and is quite clearly dysfunctional. In
other words, the reader has to have a symbolic reading of the images.
In fact, what seems to be a simple tale of an American couple spending
a rainy afternoon inside their hotel room serves as a great metaphor
for their relationship. This symbolic imagery, hided behind common
objects, gives the story all its significance.
This short story contains a great number of striking and literary
symbols. In a symbolic reading, the opening paragraph describes the
crisis that exists in the marriage of the couple. In other words, the
description of the bad weather, of the "empty square"[1](l.10) and of
their isolation, reflects this conflict and also sets the negative
mood. In fact, since the beginning, Ernest Hemingway insists on the
isolation of the couple that "does not know any of the people they
passed" (ll.1-2) and are "only two Americans"(l.1). Here it is
interesting to notice that they are isolated from the outside world
but also from each other. There is no communication and they have no
contact, they are distant from each other. Then this isolation is
accentuated because of the weather, it is raining. The rain is part
responsible for the fact that they have to stay in their room.
Nevertheless, the rain has a symbolic meaning together with the
description of the public garden. It represents as suggests the critic
John V. Hagopian the "lack of fertility"[2] (p.230) .

Moreover, Ernest Hemingway has succeeded very well in this story in
showing that individualism of the people living with their own problem
is in many case the cause of split and despair.

When given a chance to become a hero would you take it? Cowardice and courage are main themes in numerous of Tim O’Brien’s stories. “On the Rainy River”, a short story by O’Brien, the author uses a variety of figurative language, follows the conventional mythological structure with a twist, and the theme of cowardice.
because the author is saying that you need to repent and ask for forgiveness to
He uses the symbolism in a way that makes you have to think about what they stand for in terms of what the couple is going through. The short story, ‘Hills Like White Elephants’, is all about how selfish the man is. The couple are not compatible together and throughout the story you can start to see that. This is through symbolism and the dialogue that is in the story. The way the dialogue is placed, helps Hemingway’s idea for the story a lot by having the woman silent the whole time that they are “discussing” the operation. During that time period, it wasn’t normal to get an abortion, but during the short story, it is made to seem like it was a very normal thing. The beaded curtain, alcohol, and the two sides of the valley, are just some of the symbolism used in the short story to tell what the couple views as individuals. While analyzing the dialogue, readers can tell that even though the woman is silent she still wants to keep the child and the man does
In the book The Giver, Louis Lowry uses symbolism to induce the reader to think about the significance of an object or character in the book. She uses symbolism using objects or characters to represent something when she wants readers to think about its significance. She chooses not to tell her readers directly, but indirectly, by using symbolism. For example, she used light eyes, Gabriel and the sled as types of symbols with different meanings.
In literature, symbolism is used to give meaning to certain things throughout a story that are different than their literal sense. Symbolism also gives the writer freedom to add a deeper meaning to their work. The storm that took place in Kate Chopin’s story, The Storm, is used to symbolize getting Alcee and Calixta back together, the passion between the two of them, and to keep Bobinot and Bibi from returning to the gallery to find Alcee and Calixta.
A.S. Byatt uses symbolism in her story “The Thing in the Forest” to show how children in England during World War II, like herself, felt and reacted to the events that they knew where bad but didn’t understand. This can easily be shown through the sequencing of the plot, the deeper meanings behind characters and places, and the post effects it had the main characters.
“Like a river flows so surely to the sea darling, so it goes some things are meant to be.” In literature there have been a copious amount of works that can be attributed to the theme of love and marriage. These works convey the thoughts and actions in which we as people handle every day, and are meant to depict how both love and marriage can effect one’s life. This theme is evident in both “The Storm” by Kate Chopin and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Gilman; both stories have the underlying theme of love and marriage, but are interpreted in different ways. Both in “The Storm” and in “The Yellow Wallpaper,” the women are the main focus of the story. In “The Storm” you have Calixta, a seemingly happy married woman who cheats on her husband with an “old-time infatuation” during a storm, and then proceeds to go about the rest of her day as if nothing has happened when her husband and son return. Then you have “The Yellow Wallpaper” where the narrator—who remains nameless—is basically kept prisoner in her own house by her husband and eventually is driven to the point of insanity.
Ernest Hemingway is an incredible writer, known for what he leaves out of stories not for what he tells. His main emphasis in Hills Like White Elephants seems to be symbolism. Symbolism is the art or practice of using symbols, especially by investing things with a symbolic meaning or by expressing the invisible or intangible by means of visible or sensuous representations (merriam-webster.com). He uses this technique to emphasize the importance of ideas, once again suggesting that he leaves out the important details of the story by symbolizing their meaning.
In the book The Things They Carried, the author Tim O’Brien uses conflict and symbolism to show the central idea that sometimes people can fail to be brave enough. O’Brien shows this central idea throughout the whole book and especially during the chapter “The Lives of the Dead”.
Symbolism is the practice of representing objects by symbols or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. There is several symbols in the story. One big noticeable symbol is the storm. The storm is preventing the characters from escaping the island. It is also allowing the murderer to do his acts without any problem or concern. The storm is a symbol of the violent scenes that are occurring on Indian Island. It starts with the man carrying the corpse of General MacArthur into the dining room, and the characters are realizing that there is a murder on the island. Moreover, food is also a symbol. In the beginning of the novel, it starts with a fancy dinner and shifts to canned food and later to no food. It symbolizes the different pattern of events on the island. At the end of the story, the characters do not want to grab food, “‘It’s two o’clock. What about lunch? Vera said obstinately: I’m not going back to the house. I’m going to stay here- in the open… Vera said: ‘If I even see a tinned tongue, I shall be sick! I don’t want any food. People go days on end with nothing sometimes when they’re on a
The constant appearance of rain allows for sadness to be foreshadowed; the opposite can be inferred where there is more of a relief than sadness. The book says in the weather “…came the permanent rain and with the rain came the cholera” (Hemingway, 4). When the rain pours in the beginning of the book, it started to describe the scenery. The rain was signifies rain as death and as a tragedy for thousands of death soldiers follow along the cholera that comes with the rain. Usually when it rains in a novel or in a movie, the plot turns negative. Rain serves as a potent symbol of inevitable disintegration of happiness in life. Before Hemingway describes the rain, he says that “the leaves” on the trees “fell early that year” and this is not an example of rain, but it shows that not only does rain foreshadow sadness, but nature itself does. The nature aspect of this was that the leaves symbolize the soldiers and since they are falling early that year that means that they are dying as a young man. The death of them are sometimes forgotten with the permanent rain that falls o...

In “Habitation”, Atwood uses simple images such as the “forest,” “desert,” “unpainted stairs,” and “fire” to refer to the reality of marriage, but yet, she delivers an optimistic message about the unstable relationship or problems between the newlyweds by showing hopeful interpretations. Therefore, the poem implies the marriage is like building a house because it starts with very simple things, but as times goes by, couple can learn how to deal with all problems and maintains a happy marriage.
What is the use of symbolism in writing? Is it merely to confuse the reader or is its true intent to make the reader think about the meaning of the story? A symbol is a person, object, or event that suggests more than its literal meaning (Meyer 220). In Ernest Hemingway's short story "Hills Like White Elephants," Hemingway uses a plethora of symbols to convey the idea that the young girl, Jig is ambivalent to having an abortion and that her older American boyfriend does not want to have the baby. Although the word abortion is never used in the story, the reader understands the concept through Hemingway's symbolism.
A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway, is a story about love and war. Frederic Henry, a young American, works as an ambulance driver for the Italian army in World War I. He falls tragically in love with a beautiful English nurse, Miss Catherine Barkley. This tragedy is reflected by water. Throughout the novel Ernest Hemingway uses water as metaphors. Rivers are used as symbols of rebirth and escape and rain as tragedy and disaster, which show how water plays an important role in the story.
