How Napoleon Takes and Maintains Control Of Animal Farm in George Orwell's Novel
George Orwell's character Napoleon is a very clever and sly animal. He
uses several methods to take and maintain control of the farm. His
primary methods are by using fear, by exploiting the animal and by
bending the rules. Napoleon uses is intellect to good effect as far as
self-interest is concerned.
Napoleon instills fear as a way of giving the animal no chance to
argue about what he says. This allows him to run the farm in his own
manner and gives him a more confortable life than the other animals.
Early on in Animal Farm, Napoleon takes Jessie and Bluebells nine
newborn puppies. These puppies become the forefront of his campaign of
fear. He uses them to gain power by eliminating his nemesis, Snowball
"They dashed straight for Snowball…he slipped through a hole in the
hedge and was seen no more." Also, Napoleon used the dogs in the
public forum he created by setting an example of what would happen to
those animals who chose to disobey him. When it was revealed that some
of the animals had done things to side with the Snowball, Napoleon
executed them in front of everyone else. Orwell's character Squealer
was given a great ability to speak, this helped Napoleon get out of
sticky situations and inscribe fear into the animals' heads all at
once. When any of the animals questioned any of Napoleons actions, he
would confuse the animals with his intellect but would do it in a
cunning way by asking, "Surely Comrades, you do not want Jones back?"
By using this persuasive rhetorical question, the animals wouldn't
question what it was Jones had done and woul...

representing the dictator, Stalin. Towards the end, Animal Farm looses
its democracy. Napoleon used other animals such as Squealer to
maintain control and did not give ant of the other animals a say in
what went on. This allows Napoleons self-interest to be fuelled by the
power that comes to him. To keep that power Napoleon engraves fear
into the animals' minds, exploits their hard work and bends the rules
to suit his needs. He uses militaristic tactics such as biding his
time for example when he waits until Snowballs windmill plans are
finalised before using them himself. This again ties in with the
Russian revolution. Orwell uses Napoleon to express his view on Stalin
in the ways that he keeps and maintains control of animal farm as
Stalin did of Russia.
does not approve of this and says "How can he find himself on a farm?
George Orwell uses power corrupts as a theme for Animal Farm. Orwell defines “power corrupts” as a distortion of ideals and practices to legitimize the power of a particular group or person. Orwell uses the pigs, and specifically Napoleon, to show how power is gained and then corrupted. “By the time he (Snowball) had finished speaking, there was no doubt as to which way the vote would go… Napoleon stood up… uttered a high-pitched whimper… and nine enormous dogs wearing brass-studded collars came bounding into the barn.” (52,53) George Orwell’s message that power corrupts is shown through pigs rise to power, Napoleon’s takeover, and Napoleon’s dictatorship.
Napoleon is an extremely deceitful character in numerous ways. For example, Napoleon tricks the animals into thinking concepts that are not true. “Throughout the whole period of his seeming friendship with Pilkington, Napoleon had really been in a secret agreement with Frederick,” (31). This shows that Napoleon lied to the animals about which farm he was going to sell wood to. Furthermore, this also illustrates that the animals might not trust Napoleon if he continues to lie to them. Additionally, Napoleon is an untruthful menace who will do nothing to help the farm or the animals. “Day and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for YOUR sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples,” (12). This shows that Napoleon is trying to
When the time comes to vote for either Napoleon or Snowball, Napoleon uses Snowball to gain power by blaming everything that goes wrong on him to make the animal’s thing negatively about him and his future plans for the farm. George Orwell could make his point about the Russian revolution clearer and easier for the readers by using the animal. Napoleon is breaking the commandment number six which is no animal shall kill any other animal. After the rebellion the animals create the seven commandments. Propaganda plays a big part in the maintenance of power. Most of the animals represent characters in the Russian revolution such as : Napoleon represents Josef Stalin, however, Old Major represents Karl Marx or Vladimir Llyich Lenin, Snowball is like Leon Trotsky and Mr. Jones is like Nicholas the second. The pigs reveal that they have taught themselves to read and write, this is important because it makes them have an advantage over the other animals and it could come in handy at important times when they are trying to fool the animals into believing something. This is made so that the s...
Power is a privilege that can be abused. In the book “Animal Farm” a pig named napoleon had the privilege given to him from the very prestigious and distinguished leader named Old Major. Power is given to the pigs to lead all the animals in the farm that they overruled their leader. Napoleon was nice at first but the animals soon realize what is yet to come. He stays in power a long time by using animalism, fear by jones and the dogs and propaganda to his advantage.
The animals on Manor Farm gather to discuss Major's dream on his plans for a Rebellion against the humans.
In George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm a fable is told of one pig who is there to conquer and stay. Napoleon is a young slightly intelligent pig who has found himself in the heart of Manor Farm looked upon by others, but in order to gain his people's’ respect, animals’ respect, he must use tactics to conquer Manor Farm some of his different tactics include using the power of trust and betrayal, manipulation of words and pasts, and fear. Through these three tactics he withholds the power of corruption, we see different examples in the novel of his valor and his ruthlessness used in order to achieve what he wants.
one of the leaders of the Soviet Union. Joseph Stalin like Napoleon was not a good speaker, cared deeply about power, and he killed all that opposed him. They both were extremely great at promising wonderful lies. One huge conflict that I discovered while reading this novel is over power, the human beings versus the animals on the farm and later in the story the animals versus the other animals. The animals and the humans are always fighting each other. The pigs were trying to convince other animals not to take orders from the humans. Old Major which was the original creator of the animal revolution says “Man is the only real enemy we have. Remove Man from the scene, and the root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished forever”. Old Major basically is the one who in my opinion created the idea of all humans being their major problem. Old Major also says “There, comrades, is the answer to all our problems. It is summed up in a single word- Man”. This is a perfect example of how he strongly believes that their life would be much better without human beings. He continues to try to convince the animals how terrible humans are by saying “Man is the only creature who consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all animals”. Old Major sang this song to the farm animals “Beasts of England!
5. Setting is a working farm. The setting allows the microcosm of the Animal Farm to be basically undisturbed. Had it been close to a big city or other small towns, then there would have been more interruptions and challenges to Napoleon’s take

Often times in a communist society, a leader’s use of language can lead to abuse of power. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, the farm leaders, the pigs, use unknown language, invoke scare tactics, and create specific laws, thereby enabling them to control other animals, to suit their greedy desires, and to perform actions outside their realm of power. Because of the pigs’ use of broad language, implementation of scare tactics, and creation and manipulation of laws, they are able to get away with avoiding laws and convincing other animals into believing untrue stories and lies that are beneficial to the pigs.
Lord Acton, the British historian once said, “Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.” In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the author gives many examples of how power is used to manipulate and produce fear. In this book the main character, Napoleon, became a master of using various tactics to gain and maintain power over the rest of the animals. Napoleon used propaganda, manipulation and fear to gain more loyalty and power throughout the farm.
Napoleon, a main character in George Orwell's Animal Farm, was very cruel. so why does everyone consider him such an effective leader? In Animal Farm Orwell gives Napoleon, the dictator of the farm, many characteristics that make him an effective leader. Throughout the book Napoleon had a manipulative attitude, a strong support system, and he used scare tactics to intimidate and gain control of the other animals on the farm.
The author of the novel “Animal Farm” George Orwell once wrote “every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been against totalitarianism”. Similarly “Animal Farm” also highlight about the totalitarianism. As all other revolutions, the revolution of animal farm also arises with the dream for a better and more perfect society which transfers in to a totalitarian night mare with the urge for the power in the minds of animals, who symbolizes the people who live in society. “Animal Farm is a satirical allegory of Soviet totalitarianism during the Stalin era. In the novel Orwell uses pigs to represent the ruling class and throughout the story he represent how the ruling class people spread and improve their power employing pigs as the characters.
he is older and has a bigger life than what he did on the farm, and he
