Designing Babies

Should we be designing babies? Designer babies are people who are
genetically modified before birth, (as an embryo) to change their sex,
looks or possibly even personality!

Since the DNA code was cracked a couple of years ago, it has been made
possible to change a human embryo by injecting genes into it. These
injected genes can change the sex, looks and personality of that
particular child when he / she is born. For example, you can currently
choose the sex of your child in the USA although it costs a hefty $

Are these designer babies improving on nature? Improving on nature is
a step forward for the human race; in a word, evolution. Are we, by
designing and genetically modifying babies, evolving as a race?

Surely we cannot tell. I mean, did we know when we invented fire that
we were evolving, did we know that when we invented computers that we
were evolving? No. However, we did it all the same. The point I am
trying to make is that we cannot know what evolution is or improving
without first giving it a go. How can we ever hope to evolve without
taking these risks? The answer is we cannot.

Throughout this essay, I will outline the arguments for and against
designing babies. I will then conclude by giving my final thoughts and
opinions on how I feel we should continue our research and
experimentation of Designer Babies.

Thus far, nature has worked tirelessly to mould the distinctive
characteristics that make modern man, however this process has been
very slow, taking many thousands of years to perfect. Nowadays, with
the dramatic discovery, in recent years, of the human genome,
scientists h...

the most strict guidelines laid down to protect human research and
find an unscrupulous doctor to carry out their wishes. Carried to the
extreme people with access to money may feel justified in "purchasing"
a made to order beautiful baby.

Once guidelines have been drawn up it would also be important to have
unilateral agreement between the worldwide governments as it would be
pointless to make designer babies, for the purpose of parental
satisfaction illegal in Europe only to have people travel to the USA
and carry out the procedure there.

Therefore, my final verdict is that designer babies have the potential
to improve on nature although research and experimentation must be
carried out with increased international restraint until we have more
definite guidelines to protect us.

The Ethics of Genetic Engineering: Designer Babies Essay

- A new trend lately is Buzzfeed quizzes that vary in category. You can take a quiz that tells you what celebrity you are most alike, who you should marry, and even what your occupation or college major should be. How these quizzes work are that you are asked a bunch of random questions that make you choose between colors, traits, hobbies and food. As if a color dictates if you should be a teacher or a lawyer. It’s ridiculous. But this isn’t just happening on Buzzfeed, it is also happening in our everyday lives....   [tags: parents, natural, designing children]

Designer babies, a rather amusing as well as a controversial field in science, could one day change the living world. The term ‘designer babies’ is used by people like journalists. A more scientific term would be ‘genetically modified babies’. Designing babies is actually more of a general term as this covers lots of different areas within. Designer Babies: Unethical and Unnecessary Essay

- ... On the website they discuss a range of opinions that both justify as well as diminish the idea of designer babies. One quote in particular "We could have healthy babies from any diseases... it would be a better place if we had healthier and stronger babies." Encourages my belief that if we were to begin ethical genetic engineering it will create a stronger more healthy human race. Others of course would say that diseases and disabilities are natural and should be left up to fate to decide....   [tags: disabilities, disease, victoria secret model]

Designer Babies Should Not Be Regulated Essay

- Designer Babies If it seems hard choosing what features to put on a new computer, then imagine how hard it would be to choose them for a child. The options could be endless, from hair color to what activities the child will be good at. Some people think designer babies are a good way to make the baby they really want. However, designing a baby is unethical and should not be used for anything but medical purposes only. Therefore, genetic engineering for designer babies should be regulated. Admittedly, some people believe that choosing the sex of their child will help avoid many abortions across the world....   [tags: DNA, Gene, Francis Crick, Want]

Designer Babies: Genetic Engineering Essay

- What do one think of when they hear the words “Designer Babies”. A couple designing their own baby of course, and it’s become just that. Technology has made it possible for there to be a way for doctors to modify a babies characteristics and its health. Genetically altering human embryos is morally wrong, and can cause a disservice to the parents and the child its effecting. For just thousands of dollars more, women going through in vitro fertilization can later choose to have a certain gender with perfect vision, a great heart, a natural ability for sports, and being able to avoid diseases (Angelle)....   [tags: genetically altering human embryos]

- Designer Babies Since the time DNA was discovered, genetic modification has been advancing in our world. Around the late 20th century designing babies became a new topic. Genetic engineering is a powerful and potentially very dangerous tool. To alter the sequence of nucleotides of the DNA that code for the structure of complex living organisms, can have extremely ill effects although the potential benefits can be huge. Today’s advances in gene therapy make it possible to remove bad genes and replace them with functioning genes in cells lacking this function....   [tags: Genetic Engineering ]

A New World Of Possible Designer Babies Essays

- Introduction In recent years, great advancement has been made in medicine and technology. Advanced technologies in reproduction have allowed doctors and parents the ability to screen for genetic disorders (Suter, 2007). Through preimplantation genetic diagnosis, prospective parents undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) can now have their embryo tested for genetic defects and reduce the chance of the child being born with a genetic disorder (Suter, 2007). This type of technology can open the door and possibility to enhance desirable traits and characteristics in their child....   [tags: In vitro fertilisation]

Designer Babies : Limitations Of Genetic Modification Essay

- Designer Babies: The limits to take with genetic modification What if we could choose the color of eyes we would want our offspring to be born with. How tall we would want them to be. Or what if the child might be born with sickle cell anemia or Down syndrome, and we might be able to prevent that from occurring by causing a certain gene from their DNA to be changed before birth. This is called genetic modification, a direct manipulation of adding and removing genes from an organism’s DNA. It might seem like genetic engineering is relatively new technology, but it has been around since 12,000 B.C.; of course the technology to actually select one gene, and completely add or remove it from the...   [tags: DNA, Gene, Virus, Genetics]
