Ashley sat up with a jolt. 'He's back; he's really back; Vic's back,'
she thought. Or was it just a dream? Was it yet again another illusion
she had created for herself to believe in? She sighed heavily. For the
past few months, she had found it difficult to distinguish reality
from fragments of her memory. It was three in the morning. The silence
was deafening as she threw open her windows to let in the cool night
air.
Her eyes travelled over to the wooden swing at the corner of the
garden. That one simple swing held so many memories for her, happy
memories. She closed her eyes and recalled the many, many times where
they had laughed and played there; they're laughter so bright and
carefree in the gentle breeze that blew. The flowers had been so
beautiful, so beautiful. The wild daisies, the rose bushes, the
tulips…
Tears filled her eyes as she saw a seven year old Vic and herself
swinging on the swing.

"Vic?" Ashley asked.
"Hmm?" Vic answered
"If we ever find a genie who will give us one wish, what will you
want?" Ashley asked quietly.
Vic stopped the swing and thought. He turned to look at Ashley, his
expression serious. His face broke into a childish grin as he said:
"I want the two of us to live forever and ever, so that we'll never be
apart!"
"Can you promise me that Vic? Can you promise me that we'll always be
together?" Ashley asked softly.
"Of course we'll always be together!" Vic answered with confidence.
Ashley smiled gently and they continued swinging in companionable
silence.

As the day continued, she could not shrug back the feeling that she
was being followed. But every time she tried to catch the person in
the act. She turned to find nobody. She became increasingly puzzled.
Why was this person following her anyway? Unless…
The final bell of the day went off and Ashley trudged to her locker.
Because she was exhausted, she packed up slowly. The people around her
slowly dispersed and she was the only person left there. The usually
noisy corridor was now as quiet as a cemetery. Again she could see
that shadow which had become like an old friend during the course of
the day. Was she imagining stuff again, or did the shadow seem to be
coming closer? The shadow soon blocked out the light that was shining
on the locker.
She looked up to find Vic.
In Shadow of a Doubt, Hitchcock utilizes and stretches the ambiguous line between comedy and suspense by utilizing smaller characters in the film to keep the story line moving, and to help break sequence or rhythm of what the audience had been perceiving at the time. Many of the minor characters were used as “fillers”, such as the waitress in the bar when Uncle Charlie and Charlie are sitting in the bar, and makes the comment “I would die for a ring like this”; or the quiet, gentle neighbor Herb who is fascinated with the process of homicide and murder. It brings to the audience an immediate comic relief, but similar to all of Hitchcock, leaves an unsettling feeling of fear and suspense with the viewer. Shadow of a Doubt is a film that hits very close to home for me, primarily because of the small town feel very similar to Orono that I have grown to know so well. There is a brutal irony that lurks through the film, especially during the time period that the film was made. The picturesque stereotype of small town life in the 40’s is brutally torn apart by Hitchcock wit and creative ingénue, putting the viewer in an uncomfortable mind stretch of reality.

Shadow of a Doubt is an Alfred Hitchcock film that was shot on location in the 1940's town of Santa Rosa, California. The town itself is representative of the ideal of American society. However, hidden within this picturesque community dark corruption threatens to engulf a family. The tale revolves around Uncle Charlie, a psychotic killer whose namesake niece, a teenager girl named Charlie, is emotionally thrilled by her Uncles arrival. However her opinion slowly changes as she probes into her mysterious uncle. In the film, director/producer Alfred Hitchcock blends conventions of film noir with those of a small town domestic comedy as a means of commenting on the contradictions in American values.

Ged, the main character in The Wizard of Earthsea, by Ursula K. LeGuin, through an act of pride and spite unwittingly unleashes a powerful shadow creature on the world, and the shadow hunts Ged wherever he goes. After failing to kill Ged the first time, he learns the only way to destroy the shadow is to find its name. What Ged must realize is the shadow was created by the evil in his own heart. Also, the shadow is not entirely evil, and Ged can actually draw strength from it. In doing so, Ged will realize that the only way to discover the shadow’s name is to discover that he and the shadow are one. Carl G. Jung in Man and His Symbols, describes the shadow as containing the hidden, repressed, and unfavorable “tendencies” of the conscious personality. “Such tendencies form an ever-present and potentially destructive ‘shadow’ to our conscious mind.”

Glenda starts to sing and invites all the munchkins to come out and meet Dorothy, who has save them from their shadow, the wicket witch of the east. Glenda, after welcoming Dorothy, points to an area that has caused excitement in this new land; Dorothy’s house has landed on and killed a figure whose feet can be seen from beneath the house. This was the wicked witch of the east, who has terrorized the land, the shadow, the villain, the evil one, and she is now dead. The Shadow archetype is a negative figure, representing things we don 't like and would like to eliminate. The shadow often takes the form of the antagonist in a story.” Ms. Gulch in Dorothy’s ordinary world is a person she wanted to be rid of. The only difference in the adventure

The story “The Dead” by James Joyce is about the Christmas party, thrown by the Morkan sisters. But it is mostly about love, lost love and incapability to forget those who have been loved and lost. “He longed to recall to her those moments, to make her forget the years the years of their dull existence together and remember only their moments of ecstasy. For the years, he felt, had not quenched his soul or hers” (145). The relationship between Gabriel and Gretta is just one of the conflicts in this story. His selfishness and focusing on himself makes Gabriel blindness as ignorance of Gretta’s past life.
Whether God exists or not, the importance of God in a human life, the values of religions... have been a controversial and abstract enigma of man’s spiritual life. On the way to find the truth, many people seem to lose their initial purpose as well as their beliefs. Throughout his Christian novel, This Present Darkness, Frank E. Peretti calls attention, mostly from the Christians, to the importance of prayer and faith in God in a Christian’s life.
