Intolerance in American Society Intolerance of other people's culture, religion, ethnic background and skin colour was a major issue in the 1920's America. This was, of course the era of the economic boom that helped to make America a rich and prosperous country in which to live. This economic boom made America a very attractive place to immigrate to, especially to those in countries that were not so well off. This meant immigration on a massive scale. People from all over the world, particularly Eastern Europe came together in one city and work for a living. The amount of people from different countries and social backgrounds all in one small area i.e. a city, America is huge, is bound to spark off racial tensions even hatred as they all congregate together and compete for jobs and the need to prosper. The people who lived in these cities in the first place would see these immigrants as a threat to their jobs, homes and way of living as people from poorer countries would be willing to work harder, for longer hours and less pay. Also, along with the immigrant themselves comes their culture and way of living, which may be totally different from the natives' and more than they are willing to accept. In American cities, the more established immigrant groups; Irish-Americans, French Canadian-Americans and German-Americans, tended to look down on the more recent Italian and Eastern European immigrants. In turn these immigrants had nothing but disapproval for blacks and Mexicans, at the foot of the 'scale'. After a while, because of their unwillingness, even refusal to live along side one another, ghettos, small areas of one hig... ... middle of paper ... ... poetry. However, for most it was still not clear sailing, many black people still lived in abject poverty. They were made to pay higher rents for worse conditions than white people and other minorities. Although the standard of education and healthcare rose they were still miles behind the standards of whites. When they walked down the street they were subjected to discriminating comments, even violent attacks as a lot of the city's problems were blamed on them. Even the more established black people frowned upon the newcomers as none could suppress a desire to hate. In all intolerance was very widespread in America especially in the southern states and the northern cities, this is partly due to the cultures of their old countries and their unwillingness to change or accept other peoples ways, cultures or religions.
A Not So 50:50 Nation Culture Wars? The Myth of a Polarized America: Book Review The book Culture Wars? The Myth of a Polarized America by Morris P. Fiorina, Samuel J. Abrams, and Jeremy C. Pope is a persuasive text regarding America and its division on political topics. In chapter one, Fiorina begins with a powerful quote from Pat Buchanan’s 1992 speech at the Republican National Convention, “There is a religious war…a cultural war as critical to the…nation…as the cold war…for this war is for the soul of America” (Fiorina et al. 1).
In Daniel Flynn’s essay “Football Does a Body Good,” he states his point of view on football and the way people should see it. Football is a dangerous sport that has caused many types of head injuries concussions and other health problems throughout the years. This popular sport has caused many players to develop diseases later on in life, such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, also known as CTE, Alzheimer 's, and Dementia. One of the NFL’s most pressing issues is concussions, which can have life-changing health effects on the football players.
American football can be joyful and entertaining to watch but what people do not know is that players are suffering a disease that has never been discovering before. In 2009, Jeanne Marie Laskas novel “Concussion,” brought one question to American. Can football kill people? She concludes that playing football can cause permanent brain damage, cause a person to go crazy, and to the point of death. She uses diction and anecdotes to bring a threat to football players in America to light.
Football is an extremely violent game not only in the physical part but also in the mental part of the game. Players are coach to be vicious on the field. they are taught to get mad and take their aggression out on the other player. Which can be dangerous when two or more players are trying to hurt(intentionally or not) the other player by hitting them hard. High school sports are dangerous because rese...
Football is a sport that over the years has slowly taken over baseball as America’s pastime. What most likely comes to mind when thinking of American football is a fast paced sport that seems to grab your attention and never let go until the final nail biting seconds. This high energy contact sport can be entertaining and exciting to watch, but has underlying dangers especially for young kids that can be potentially fatal. Kids under the age of fourteen do not need to play tackle football due to the risk of injuries, particularly to the head, that occur when participating in the sport.
This topic of argument paper is one I can relate with due to the fact that I am a major sports fan. I feel this topic has many factors when deciding on if you think college football should or shouldn’t be banned. With football being a popular sport, most people would be able to easily write an argument paper about this matter.
Religious conscience in America has evolved considerably since the first settlers emigrated here from Europe. Primary settlements were established by Puritans and Pilgrims who believed "their errand into the wilderness [America] was above all else a religious errand, and all institutions - town meeting, school, church, family, law-must faithfully reflect that fact" (Gaustad 61). However, as colonies grew, dissenters emerged to challenge Puritan authority; indeed, many of them left the church to join untraditional religious sects such as "the Ranters, the Seekers, the Quakers, the Antinomians, and the Familists" (Westbrook 26). Debates over softening the stance on tolerance in the church engendered hostility in many religious leaders, priming some officials to take action. Whether it was in direct response to "the liberalizing tendencies beginning to take hold in some [. . .] New England churches" (Westbrook 65), or a "reaction against the attempt in the Age of Reason to reduce Christian doctrine to rationalistic explanation" ("Great Awakening"), the Great Awakening impressed upon the issues of religious conscience. Moreover, what spawns from this controversy is a query over the juxtaposition of morality and spirituality: the question of whether these conditions are actually related. The gradual escalation of unconventional thinking in religious affairs facilitated new ideas on what defined spirituality; one religious theory, boosted by Thomas Paine and his book, The Age of Reason, denounced both Christianity and Atheism, proposing instead, a new concept: the middle path of Deism.
Football is America’s favorite sport. It is a fast-paced, hard-hitting game. Every week thousands of men and boys all across the country take part in football and every week these men and boys receive violent hits during the game. Frequently, as a result of these violent hits, the player receives a concussion. However, the long-term effects of concussions on players are not fully understood. New research shows that even a slight concussion in a football game can have lasting effects on a player. As a result of this research, children under the age of fourteen should not play tackle football.
People may wonder, "out of all the sports there are, how can football be the most dangerous? Research has shown that many football players suffer from head trauma while playing. Football can cause these young boys and men to have health issues dealing with their brain which can led to mental health problems. A concussion is simply brain damage. This happens when two football players hit head on. Some may think this is
High school football may be dangerous but it is also a life altering experience. From what these boys can do out on the field to what they can become in life and all the things they can accomplish, putting it in peoples head that it is a dangerous sport is ridiculous. Yes, football can cause some serious injury but those chances aren’t very high and what are these boys going to get out of life if they never take that risk? Then end up asking themselves, “what if?” These boys should not let anything get in the way of what they want to do because even if they fail
Bounteous doctors, trainers, and even N.F.L players also believe is dangerous to play. Countless of people usually won’t want to play a dangerous sport, but countless are coming up with ideas to lower the risk and cause football to be safer to play. As explained in “How dangerous is high school football?” football is the highest leading cause of sport-related injuries. Secondly, teens are more vulnerable to receiving concussions from playing football. Furthermore, N.F.L players that have had concussions has made people worry about teen football players head injuries. The copious amount will suggest football is dangerous, but there are doctors, trainers, even N.F.L
Social Deviance: What is it? The topic of social deviance encompasses such a broad range of ideas. Something as monumentally significant as the Holocaust, as well as something as seemingly insignificant as not covering ones’ mouth while coughing, are both seen as acts of social deviance. Social deviance being any act that is contrary to that which is accepted in one’s society, it seems nearly impossible not to be socially deviant at least occasionally.
Living in America we deal with a lot of diversity, especially those in the criminal justice degree program where situations caused by diversity can lead to a problem. Stereotyping is one of the biggest problems that we deal with, particularly in law enforcement. There have been many allegations of police officers accused of going after individuals and accusing them of a crime based on the sole fact of what their religious beliefs might be. This has been going on for a long time; however in recent years, it has gotten worse. The main job of police officers is to uphold the law, not to break it. Although stereotyping is not against the law, police officers have taken an oath to protect all human beings, regardless of their race or religion and stereotyping based on religion should not take place. Just because an individual is of a certain race dose not give us the right to stereotype them as a bad human being.
The choice of popularity, or being a normal kid, is a predicament a lot of young teens find themselves in nowadays due to high school football. Football seems to be the biggest and coolest sport in most high schools. Some schools go as far as having parades and pep rallies before games. While other sports just get a morning announcement. But what comes along with the popular high school sport, isn’t so great. Football should be banned from American high schools because it comes with a lot of pain both physically and mentally, it puts loads of pure pressure on incoming students, and it promotes pain over pleasure.
America is slowly “dumbing down”, according to Psychology Today, due to a rising and devastating movement of anti- intellectualism in the American culture. It rejects matters of science, art, and humanities because of superiority, ignorance, and just from being naïve to situations. Anti –intellectualism is when a person disregards intellect and reason in solving viable situations and understanding the reality of the situation; but, instead uses action and emotions to solve them. Now, this is not saying that those who are uneducated and unintelligent are classified as anti-intellectualist; even those who are educated and judicious are subjective. It is said best by David Niose, “Social dysfunction can be traced to the abandonment of reason.”
