Surreal, unexplainable, bizarre, dreamlike. Terms such as these are often used to describe the feelings associated with Shakespeare's Macbeth. These unreal qualities are the result of numerous twisted perversions in the plot and characters. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are chased by equivocation, trying to balance out reality and their dream-world though they are entrenched in a fog of uncertainty and doubt. Macbeth himself quickly becomes an instrument of this distortion due to the influences of the Weird Sisters, Lady Macbeth, and the unstoppable chain of events his initial violence sets off. Macbeth is constantly in a state of dreaming, thought he does not realize it. In fact, most of the time, he cannot tell the difference between reality and dreaming. The most prevalent perversion of reality is the confusion between inside and outside. Firstly, the hallucinations experienced by Macbeth and his wife are examples of this disorder. During one of his soliloquies, Macbeth asks: Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee. I have thee not, and yet I see thee still/ Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible, To feeling as to sight? Or art thou but A dagger of the mind, a false creation Proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain? (2.1.44-50) Macbeth is questioning his own sanity, whether or not this dagger he sees before him is part of the real world or created by his troubled mind. After Lady Macbeth takes part in the murder of King Duncan by replacing the bloody daggers in the hands of the guards, she is filled with guilt and sleepwalks almost nightly. Duncan was also robbed of a natural transition into death because of Macbeth's ambition, fueled by the prophecies of the Weird Sisters and the desires of his equally ambitious wife. The story of Macbeth and his short-lived struggle for the crown is an excellent example of how perversions in the physical world and in the mind can alter one's perception to the point of total confusion. There is no way that Macbeth could have stopped the series of events that transpired after he killed the king and, in so doing, killed the rational world. Though the play itself does not move entirely into a dream-world, the characters cannot always see through the haze of uncertainty and chaos that Macbeth's ambition brings upon their world. Empowered by the three witches, this situation consumes Macbeth’s consciousness until his mental state becomes deranged. This mental deterioration is evident in what he says and does as he evolves into a tyrannical ruler attempting to protect himself from enmity and suspicion. In the play Macbeth, a man is driven to murder his king and his companions after receiving a fairly ambiguous prophecy told by three witches. Although the witches triggered the series of events that later aid Macbeth’s descent into complete insanity, Macbeth is portrayed from the very beginning as a fierce and violent soldier. As the play goes on, several internal conflicts inside of Macbeth become clear. After he performs several bloody tasks, the madness inside of Macbeth is unmistakably visible to everyone around him. As a result of this insanity, he sees visions and hallucinations. Each time Macbeth hallucinates, he plunges further into insanity that is essentially caused by misguided ambition, dread and guilt. Macbeth has three key hallucinations that play a considerably important role in the development of his character: a dagger, the ghost of Banquo, and four apparitions while visiting the prophesying witches.

A.C. Bradley’s interpretation of Macbeth finds him human, conflicted, and comparable to his wife, Lady Macbeth, in many respects. They share a common ambition and a common conscience sensitive enough to feel the effects of their ambition. But the story, Bradley contends, is built upon the traits that set them apart. He focuses mainly on Macbeth. Macbeth is a character of two battling halves: his reason, or ambition, and his “imagination.” Bradley attributes the hysterical nature of Macbeth’s visions, the dagger, the specter of Banquo, and other ghosts, to his wild imagination. He “acts badly” (Bradley, 136) and loses his composure whenever his imagination triumphs over his practical side; however, Bradley also asserts that Macbeth’s imagination is “the best of him, something usually deeper and higher than his conscious thoughts” (133). Macbeth is therefore unable to make use of the “better” imagination with which he was endowed and instead only appears “firm, self-controlled and practical” when he is “hateful” (136). Macbeth is a well known, famous story by William Shakespeare which is about the tragedy of ambition and how it destroys Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Both are forever damned to a state of fearful awareness, and insomnia as a result of murdering King Duncan. This sets off an unstoppable chain of events which ends in Macbeth himself being killed and Lady Macbeth committing suicide. In the play the lack of sleep becomes fatal, as a result of the murder they committed, and the awareness is terrifying because of the continuous agony of recurring nightmares of their deeds.
