Winston-Salem State University's School of Health Sciences offers students the ability to earn Bachelor of Science degrees a variety of medical careers. The medical industry in the United States continues to increase as other professions decline due to the dwindling economy. Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Eli Lilly pharmaceutical, and Forsyth Medical Center offer positions to individuals with degrees that can be obtained through the School of Health Sciences.

Winston-Salem State University's School of Health Sciences offers two Bachelor of Science degrees: Clinical Laboratory Science and Nursing. The University's Undergraduate and Graduate catalog states "Clinical Laboratory Scientists provide a vital service to the health care team in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease." ¹ Clinical laboratory science professionals gather accurate laboratory data that is needed to aid in detecting cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, drug abuse and bacteria or viruses that cause infections. Graduates from the program can acquire employment at hospitals, physician offices and clinical laboratories. There are also positions available in sales, education and public health/infection control. The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) is an organization for clinical laboratory scientists. Due to the attack on September 11 and the war on terrorism, the United States economy has declined dramatically. Everyday, more and more individuals are begin faced with layoffs. The manufacturing sector and the textile industry have displaced many employees and left many individuals looking for a new career. In his recent visit to Winston-Salem, President George W. Bush said, "There's a wonderful, wonderful future ahead for people, who may at this moment think that their future is a little dark. Many individuals affected by the layoffs are finding themselves venturing out to the medical field where there is job security, and advancement opportunities.
