At one point in history the human population could rely on self-mobilization to sufficiently relocate from place to place. In other words, everybody used to travel around on foot because there was no other means of transportation. Mankind could only hold itself to this sole means of mobility for so long. Eventually the human mind got creative and many different ways of transportation developed. From horseback and drawn carriages to Henry Ford's marvel of creation the automobile; people began to move from place to place at a more rapid rate every day. From then onward, means of transportation has since branched off into many different variations. Advancements were originally made to increase efficiency. People were simply appeased with population movement for the greater good. Society today has drawn itself to far from that original perspective. It seems that today people are more concerned about how they look in what they ride in versus the original principal of the matter; that is, the efficiency of relocation of persons or things. The automobile may have originally been viewed as a positive aspect of efficient population transportation; however, it is arguably the single worst cause of pollution today (Bach,17). In the eternal search for a more efficient means of transportation, public transit sheds a bit of light onto the subject. Why not let this light shine down on to our wonderful hometown? Columbia is a busy crowded city that tends to clutter with traffic on a daily basis. What would be the results of introducing mass public transit to the city of Columbia? The automobile may be a marvel of invention but like our founding fathers admit in the constitution for each idea we have it probably could use a little amending here and there. Yes, transportation is necessary, but why be so wasteful and careless in the effect. Through mass public transportation the city of Columbia could benefit economically, environmentally, and socially in many ways. By understanding this concept and applying it to society today the world would be a better place.

Since the beginning of the United States the American people have been on the move. Public transportation has played a major role in the development of this nation and in bringing its citizens together. In the book “Divided Highways”, author Tom Lewis takes the reader on a journey of the building of the Interstates and the consequences(good and bad) that came from them. Lewis believes that the Interstates are a physical characteristic of America and that it shows “all our glory and our meanness; all our vision and our shortsightedness”(xiv).
When cars were just entering fashion and today's market leaders were obtaining momentum, a lot of cities relied on electric streetcar systems for public transport. These trams had actually dominated metropolitan transport because the late nineteenth century, and their abundance in heavily populated centers positioned a problem for the fledgling automotive market. Put simply, if everyone had the ability to take a trolley to work or the supermarket, there would be no demand for individual vehicles or buses.
Los Angeles, California is known worldwide to be a city designed specifically for the use of automobiles. Since Los Angeles County is so expansive, is considered to be one of the largest cities in the U.S and the World. Many Americans were glad to have purchased their own source of transportation because they loved not having to wait in the rain for the bus or also not having to walk five miles to church. This invention has made an enormous impact on the world by allowing people to get to places that once took them 5hrs to get to by walking to riding a car that only takes them about an hour now.
Before cars, people traveled by carriages, horses, streetcars and bicycles. These methods of transportation were not as effective as the car, so transportation over long distances was not entirely facilitated. This is why the innovation of the automobile was so important to the creation of suburbs and other areas of living outside the city. Transportation was facilitated and citizens could finally afford to leave the dirty and crowded city and commute from their quiet country homes outside of the mess of people and disease. Deregulating transportation would have several benefits to American motorists and pedestrians. By deregulation of transportation I mean having very limited traffic laws. This entails removing most traffic signs, specifically those that inform drivers of the laws. In addition, all traffic control devices should be removed, this includes: traffic signals, speed bumps, rumble strips and other traffic control features. Even though opponents say this would cause complete anarchy on the road, traffic laws and control devices should be removed. Eradicating laws leads to safer driving habits and removing control devices and excessive signage increases the attention of drivers.
Washington D.C. is the pride and joy of America. We put all of our major monuments there, we hold all of our major government facilities in that area, and it’s even where we house one of the most important people in the country, the president himself. With over 600,000 people living in only 68 square miles, that’s almost 9,000 people per square mile and that is including places like the National Mall on which no one lives, the truth is that it is neither effective nor environmentally safe for everyone to have a car. Because of this we have the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, or locally known as the Metro. The metro, thought of at the beginning of the 20th century, began being built in the 1950s and was supposed to be an incredible and effective underground transportation system so that people could more easily get around D.C. without a vehicle. It was supposed to be a national wonder! It was supposed to be revolutionary! The results were a little less than pleasing.

I know you enjoy the feeling of freedom that you drive your car and go to anywhere at any time. But if you decide to go to school at the morning, I suggest you do better to drive your car to the school as early as you can; since you are hard to find a spot at school. According to the Triton Review, it says “If you are here for a class at just about any time, you’ll be circling the parking lot for a while” (Thompson). If you are worried about you cannot find a parking spots on campus; Public transportation or bicycle are the great ways to help you to move from your home and to the campus. I believe you should take a bus or a bicycle to work or study to protect the environment as well as your health. By taking the buses or bicycles, students can decrease the cost of living, improve the quality of their lives, and protect the environment.
