The demand for international school in Hong Kong is increasing in the recent years. According to the annual questionnaire survey done by the Education Department, the total number of students in international schools increases 83.2 % from 1610 to 2950 within four years (1997/98 - 2001/02). Moreover, the total number of local students attending those schools also increases 63.2% from 6.8% to 11.1%. (Detail of statistics can be found in appendix P. 12) We can see that, local parents have a high value on their children's entry into international schools. In this essay, I am going to explain some reasons for the lure of international schools in Hong Kong. Firstly, I will discuss their packaging and images by exploring the web pages of some international schools in Hong Kong. Secondly, I will compare these schools with local schools in order to find out the reasons why these packaging are so attractive in Hong Kong context. Finally, I will also interview with a previous international student and his parents to find out their points of view on this issue. 1. The packaging and images of international schools It is a common belief among Hong Kong parents and students that international schools are very "attractive." However, how "attractive" are they? In this part, I am going to study the packaging and images of three international schools in order to answer this question. The three international schools selected are Chinese International School, Yew Chung International School and Shatin College. They are chosen because they gain increasing popularity and high reputation among parents in Hong Kong. By exploring to the web pages of the above three schools, the packaging used and the images of international schools can be divided ... ... middle of paper ... ...r of local students Percentage /98 29350 23520 1610 6.8 /99 29300 23270 1930 8.3 /00 29300 23660 2460 10.4 /01 29730 24980 2880 11.5 /02 30970 26420 2950 11.1 (Adapted from: http://www.info.gov.hk/emb/eng/info/lcpaper/paper1/paper1_120501a.html) Reference: Web page of Chinese International School: http://www.cis.edu.hk Web pages of Shatin College: http://www.shatincollege.edu.hk Web pages of Yew Chung International School, Hong Kong: http://www.ycef.com/en/HongKong_yewchung_school/index.htm

According to these countries, students saw the importance of getting an education. According to the book, Ripley claims that in South Korea students knew that studying the material through well will get them far in life, like getting a good job. As Ripley states that students in South Korea spent their everyday life at school, after that they go to a special program called “Hagwons” where they receive help in the subjects they are struggling and study. On the other hand, parents in South Korea help motivate and push them through to getting an education. As to American High schools, students don’t share the same viewpoint in getting the education. In the US students are more passionate in watching movies, playing video games, sports and spending their free time something that doesn’t have to relate to school. As of US parents, they “tended to act more like cheerleaders” (Ripley, 107). America parents should be more involved in their child 's education by helping motivate and encourage them to get an education as parents in South
...nts to feel more comfortable discussing academics and make friends in a way more geared to school than American children. In short, although the U.S. education system is superior to most, there are many things that if taken from the Japanese and incorporated into our system, would help our students to become more enthusiastic about school; thus making the education experience more positive and more productive.
Did you know that Japan has one of the world’s best educated populations? In this essay I will be speaking about the cross culture differences between two countries, mainly educational differences. The two fascinating, but immensely different countries that I will be speaking about is Japan and Italy. Japan’s culture grabbed my attention because knowing how strict and smart people are from there and how they take education serious really interested me. With the Italian culture their family unity is very close knit, and in Italy their arts, religion, and food is extremely important. Although Japan and Italy have differences they both still have a set of educational practices so that students can achieve a good quality of learning.
In this paper, it will be looking at the culture and education practices of Finland, Canada, and China. Education varies from country to country as well as does one's culture, lifestyle of the people who live there. In doing so will review their culture and the role of their education policies that are used to motivate schools and teachers to improve student learning along with how their culture plays into learning. Furthermore, children should be taught with respect to their culture. However, we can also learn from one another. In addition, we have similar and different educational practices from one another. Such as when it comes to the Finnish, Canadians, to the Chinese as, we all learn in different environments because of our culture. Education is fundamental in today’s society. It has become a sought after medium for attaining success. Many careers have set specific educational requirements for a person to even be considered for employment. The education that one receives can be achieved through different types of institutes. Many parents face the conundrum of sending their children to the right institution that will aid in their child’s future success. The choices seem to be in abundance but many people find themselves limited to a short list of obtainable institutions. The parents have a great deal of things that need to be thought through. This may require factors that have to be considered. Some of the factors include the following: curriculum, class sizes, cost and school’s quality but these are some questions that stand out. Does the type of school really help performance? Are there factors that hinder one type of institution from thriving? These decisions are crucial and, for the most part, will determine the type of institution the child will receive his or hers knowledge from.
Chinese education has stunned the educators when the students from Shanghai have achieved the highest score in PISA during 2011. Western parents wonder how Chinese parents raise such successful kids. Also, they assert Chinese parents are being strict to their children. The articles “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, and “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” by Amy Chua describe the experience of how the Chinese mother educate their daughters. The mothers are in the control of their daughter’s lives. However, if we want to know more about the education of Chinese traditional, we need to look into “Chinese family”. We will discover that Chinese education is not horrible as we thought, and it would not affect the development of the students. On the other hand, it is considered as a kind of love from parents because every parent wants the best for their kids. They will definitely assist us through the pathway to success.

For instance, in Singapore, there is an emphasis on meritocracy, which is the system where statuses and positions of high power are given to people selected according to merit, which are also known as achieved statuses. It has become a fundamental tenet and system that drives Singaporean’s way of life and their social interactions. A sign that meritocracy is indeed a dominant part of Singapore is shown through the prevalence of a kiasu culture in Singapore, where people are afraid to lose, and this is demonstrated by the excessive spending on tuition classes in Singapore, where parents hope that with the extra resources and time poured into a child’s learning by spending on and going for tuition, their children will be able to score better in exams and hence achieve a better status and not lose out. For example, in 2014 alone, more than $1 billion was spent on tuition classes. Yet, in the search for
Being educated in an international environment certainly sets the building blocks for the future of students. The environment through which education is realized is critical for the learning children. The Americans system of education has many advantages compared to foreign countries. Students receive an education and along with it come endless opportunities. With the education system improving, students continue to succeed. According to the Washington United Press International, the graduation rate in America is at 71 percent: a 4.8 percent increase over 1995 (“Graduation rates improve in U.S. cities”). This modest increase happened for many reason. The teachers in America usually teach one subject area and are masters of there skills. This gives an advantage to the student, for they can master their skill and learn form different styles of teaching. One might infer that the diversity in school allows the American system of education to succeed. Diversity in schools impacts the education; for, students learn more form there surrounding. Racial diversity is not common in foreign countries like Japan.
Parents have options when making decisions regarding their children’s education. School systems can really differ from country to country. In the text “American high school” by Sarah Otto, she mentions some differences between the American and the Swedish school system. In another text, “Polar opposites” written by Herman Hallberg – he writes about his year in Namibia and what the school system looks like there. My dream school would probably be a mixture of the Swedish, the American and the Namibian school systems.
