Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold
Many authors parallel the protagonists of their novels to other figures in order to make a direct comparison. Throughout the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Gabriel Garcia Marquez forms a congruence between Santiago Naser and Jesus Christ. While parallels between both men are woven within the pages, revelations of the corrupt societies are distinguished as the deaths of Santiago and Jesus essentially epitomize the cultural traditions that were destroyed by their lives, but revived through their deaths.
The portrayal of Santiago Naser develops into a direct parallel of Jesus Christ. At the beginning of the novel “Santiago put on a shirt and pants of white linen”(5). Since white is the color of innocence, this choice of clothing promotes an innocence in Santiago Naser. Just as Jesus wore a white linen cloth before he was to die, Santiago too wears white linen the day that he is supposed to die. This immediate comparison with Jesus Christ thus sets up the rest of the novel as a symbolic reference. The most direct parallels come during the narration of the direct killing of Santiago and the description of the body after the murder occurs. Marquez explains that “The knife went through the palm of his right hand and then sank into his side up to the hilt. Everybody heard his cry of pain”(139). Once again an absolute parallel is seen here. Jesus Christ was nailed to the cross by means of the palms of his hands. And just as the soldiers stabbed a wound in His side in order to ensure He was dead, the Vicario brothers stabbed the knife into the side of Santiago. Christ was killed to uphold the tradition of the church. By Christ claiming He was God, the church had been defied and thus became angry. Through the death of Jesus Christ though, the church believed that the traditional values could be upheld and remain unchanged. Overall, the comparisons between Santiago and Christ were uncountable. Marquez weaves the Biblical ideas throughout his novel in order to promote the destruction and recreation of cultural traditions. In doing so, the corrupt actions of the society were made known as the faults in people thoughts were confirmed.

Throughout the book, he shows a level of ferocity towards his goal to achieve his personal legend by overcoming obstacles in his life. Although he changes, he is still thoughtful. He represents innocence because while he was in his journey, he witnesses the cruelty of the world around him. As he is the protagonist in the story, he is patient and he trusts in his destiny and his fate. Santiago represents mankind because in each person’s life, they either change mentally, physically, or emotionally. Santiago may symbolize us trying to figure out the questions that are hard for us to solve: What is my purpose in life? What is the meaning in life? Santiago also represents the youth of today. In the beginning of the novel, his father wanted him to become a priest similar to parents wanting their children to have careers they like, but Santiago later tells his father that he wanted to travel the world. His father was disappointed, but he gave his son his blessing almost like parents giving their children their
Values are a vital part of any community. They shape the identity of a culture and help to form the identity of each individual in that society. Sometimes these embedded values have more power over a person than anyone would like to admit. Gabriel García Márquez shows the power of the value of honor in his book, Chronicle of a Death Foretold. In García Márquez’s writing, the theme of honor shows to have control over most of the characters. Through the many characters in García Márquez’s book, we can see that the heavy burden of one’s honor is portrayed as the reason for Santiago Nasar’s unfortunate homicide.
Characters are made to present certain ideas that the author believes in. In Gabriel García Márquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold there are many characters included that range from bold, boisterous characters to minuscule, quiet characters but one thing they all have in common is that they all represent ideas. Characters in the novel convey aspects of Marquez’s Colombian culture.
In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, he establishes the innocence of Santiago Nasar through the biblical allusions in the murder scene, alluding to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in the Bible. Marquez presents the murder of Santiago Nasar in this manner to exemplify the innocence of Nasar, which remained in question. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ symbolizes the innocence of Santiago Nasar because his crucifixion occurred because of the sins others even though he maintains his innocence.
Santiago Nasar is going to die. There is no doubt, no questioning, no second-guessing this reality in writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez's book, Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Set in a small Colombian town during the early 50s, Santiago Nasar is a young and rich man destined to die at the hands of the Vicario brothers for deflowering their sister, Angela Vicario, of her virginity. To restore honor to their family name, the two brothers plot to kill the accused protagonist of the alleged crime. However, while Santiago remains in the dark to his impending demise, the rest of the town, aware of the murder plot, does nothing to prevent it. In the wake of the murder, the townspeople desperately want to believe that Santiago Nasar was ill fated to die in order to evade the moral guilt of having killed an innocent man in their ritualized society.
The novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold, based on a true story from the early 1950s, tells the tale of Santiago, a young man falsely accused of taking the virginity of Angela, a woman who was to be wed to another, and the events that unfolded leading up to his gruesome murder. Though no one believed the dishonor for which Santiago was blamed for bringing to Angela, it was to greater misbelief that no one did anything to prevent his wrongful death at the hands of the Vicario twins. Also, on the morning of Santiago’s death there are three references to cocks crowing, a symbol of betrayal in Christianity (Marquez, 13, 16, 21). This symbol is also used in the Bible. In the story of the Last Supper, Jesus predicted that before the rooster crowed his disciple Peter, would deny him three times (Mark 14-72). Jesus’s disciple betrayed him by denying that he knew Jesus, and the town people betrayed Santiago by failing to warn him of the plot to end his life.
The novella “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is viewed largely as a scathing critique of societies bound to an unrefined code of honour. While that premise is relatively simple,fairly straightforward and easily justifiable, a case in stark contrast to the aforementioned idea could also be argued.The main idea for this new case being,that defending the very essence of honour was necessary for the survival of the community in order to prevent any form of moral decline and no one man should put to a stop,the actions of those who were morally obliged to undertake the restoration of honour,after all the affairs of honour were “sacred monopolies, giving access only to those who are part of the drama”(97). Indeed,as any reader who has an idea of human history would note,that there is a natural human desire for vengeance against those who desecrate their sacred ethos.Unfortunately, this essay will not dwell on this counter point, neither would a thesis be made out of it, it is only mentioned to highlight the negative implementing factor used in the restoration of honour and that factor is brutality.
Murder is a common theme for most novels. Chronicle of a Death Foretold is no exception. It is no secret that Santiago is going to be killed by the Vicario brothers, since the beginning of the novel embodies one of a headline. The reason why they killed Santiago is because of virginity. In the novel, Santiago allegedly takes Angela Vicario’s virginity. A cult of sorts has formed around the idea of men have to be “muy macho” and girls must remain pure and celibate until marriage, called machismo (Berroa). Both Berroa and Garcia Márquez go and explain that the cult obsession with virginity in Latin America. Berroa states in her article that it causes overpopulation, poverty, and is “one of the region’s major problems.” Garcia Márquez reveals his opinion in Chronicle of a Death Foretold as it is never stated in the novel if Santiago took Angela’s virginity or if she lies to save herself. Garcia Márquez has a modern writing style as “he drew literary lessons from his modernist precursors, and he openly acknowledges the impact on his work” (Delden 957). In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Gabriel Garcia Márquez correlates aspects of modernism, such as journalistic fiction, underdeveloped characters, and a fragmented writing style, to reveal ambiguity of Angela’s virginity to criticize Latin American culture.

...all want to believe that the crime was truly “foretold”, and that nothing could have been done to change that, each one of the characters share in a part of Santiago Nasar’s death. Gabriel Garcia Marquez writes about the true selfishness and ignorance that people have today. Everyone waits for someone else to step in and take the lead so something dreadful can be prevented or stopped. What people still do not notice is that if everyone was to stand back and wait for others, who is going to be the one who decides to do something? People don’t care who gets hurt, as long as it’s not themselves, like Angela Vicario, while other try to reassure themselves by thinking that they did all that they could, like Colonel Lazaro Aponte and Clotilde Armenta. And finally, some people try to fight for something necessary, but lose track of what they set out for in the first place.
Santiago can be compared to a Christ figure on the basis of his relationships with other characters in the novel. People look up to Santiago, as would a follower to Christ, hereby setting up a comparison between the two. (transition) Since the age of five, Manolin has aided the old man by working alongside him as an apprentice. Manolin is loyal to Santiago and looks up to him as if Santiago was his real father. According to Delbert Wylder, "Santiago has, in a sense been the boy’s spiritual father" ( 219). Manolin is in awe of the old man, who the town recognizes as an honorable fisherman. The boy states, "There are many good fishermen and some great ones. But there is only you." Like Santiago, Christ was also a spiritual father to his town; the town of Bethlehem. He performed miracles to heal the sick, and fed thousands of starving people. As Jim Auer says, "This demonstrates Santiago’s relation to Christ. They are both extremely unique, and were father figures in their communities" (15). ?The people of Bethlehem looked up to Christ as a father figure, and they had love and admiration towards him.? Likewise, "The love of Manolin for Santiago is that of a discipline for a master in the arts of fishing, it is also the love of a son for an adopted father" (Wagner-Martin 307). Through Manolin’s caring of the old man, he shows his love for Santiago. Even though Santiago is not Manolin’s biological father, he cares for him as though he was. "The old man was asleep in the chair and the sun was down. The boy took the old army blanket off the bed and spread it over the back of the chair and over the old man’s shoulders… and when he woke up he fed him supper" (...
Foremost, Marquez foretold Santiago’s fate with the opening line “on the day they were going to kill him, Santiago Nasar got up at five-thirty in the morning to wait for the boat the bishop was coming on” to illustrate our fate is decided before we are born (Marquez 3). Marquez lets the reader know that Santiago was going to die but the fact that he also includes the plan Santiago had that morning
The biblical references throughout the Chronicle of a Death Foretold help identify the characters, Bayardo San Roman, Maria Cervantes, Divina Flor, and the Vicario children, and add depth to the death of Santiago. Without the many religious symbols such as, the Divine Face, the murder of Santiago, the cocks crowing, and the characters, there would be little weight placed on the reactions of the townspeople towards the knowledge of Santiago’s impending death. The religious symbols solidify the idea that Christ has come again in many different forms and ideas, yet dies to renew the people’s covenant with the Lord. “Give me prejudice and I will move the world” (Márquez 100).
The symbolism in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novella, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, emphasises the connection of the rural Colombian people and the Bible. The names, deaths, and spector activity as symbolism greatly affect the novella’s parallels to Christianity.
