How is tension created in The tell tale hearts and The black cat? In this essay I am going to study the short stories ‘the black cat’ and ‘the tell tale heart’ written by famous writer Edgar Allen Poe and see how tension is created in the two tales. Both tales are written in a gothic horror genre and Poe’s intention for this was to chill and unsettle the reader, to make them anticipate what was going to happen next, as if it was really happening. Poe succeeds in doing this by the content of the tales, partly being the supernatural and the tension he creates, which plays a major role in both. He creates this tension by using several different techniques including plot, characterisation and many stylistic devices. One way that Poe creates tension is the plot of the story and where is it set. ‘The tell tale heart’ is set in the middle of nowhere and late at night, when it is dark outside. This automatically makes the reader uneasy, as nighttime and darkness is symbolic of dark and bad deeds. Poe mentions more than once that it is set ‘about midnight’ and that it is dark, ‘black as pitch’, he keeps reminding the reader of this, as he knows it is symbolic and the reader will be wary of this. Criminals will often act upon this time, as they are more likely to get away with the crime, as they cannot be seen as easily. People are most wary of little things, sounds and sights like shadows in the dark and will be on edge. Darkness and nighttime are famously scary and unsafe, portrayed in novels and films as when everything bad happens and now is the stereotypical view. The darkness seems like a disability, vision is not fully available, and the brain starts so wander as to if anything could be round the corner... ... middle of paper ... ...it his name. Both the stories were written more than 100 years ago, in 1843. They are so old that when they were written no other genre of story like it was around at the time. They were original for the time they were written and set the standard for future writers. Poe invented this new genre and his writing skills and techniques form scratch and were the first chilling, gothic horror stories ever written, which adds to the reason of why they are so effective. Because no one had ever read anything like it before, and in a scense the stories were ahead of the time because of the effect they had. Poe’s work is popular worldwide and still his stories of this genre appear chilling as they are written in a old style that is not used as much today, but this is effective and one knows that they would have had even more impact at the time they were written.
Being able to feel the world in any story is an excellent way to make readers get involved in it, and Connell does this by using imagery. Connell writes, “The sensuous drowsiness of the night was on him. ‘It’s so dark,’ he thought, ‘that I could sleep without closing my eyes; the night would be my eyelids’”(Connell 217). The mood of this quote can make any reader feel drowsy because of the way Connell describes the night. Again this is something Poe cannot achieve. For example, Poe writes, “I took from their sconces two flambeaux, and giving one to Fortunato, bowed him through several suites of rooms to the archway that led into the vaults. I passed down a long and winding staircase, requesting him to be cautious as he followed. We came at the length to the foot of the descent and stood together upon the damp ground of the catacombs of the Montresors” (Poe 867). This quote doesn’t even compare to what Connell did because Poe wrote The Cask of Amontillado without any imagery. The tone and mood created by Connell make the imagery of “The Most Dangerous Game” better than Poe’s short
Bleak, sinister, and dreary are often the words that come to mind when one thinks of Edgar Allen Poe’s literature. Poe is notorious for his morbid short stories and poems, in which he repeatedly tries to invoke the feelings of fear and suspense in his audience.“The Tell-Tale Heart” is a story about a ‘madman’ who takes the readers through his own act of cold-blooded murder. Poe uses repetition in order to build both suspense and anxiety and create the story’s mood. Poe also uses hyperboles, and word choice to disturb the reader.
Suspense. I know I have heard about that somewhere. Where … where? What does it mean? It is on the tip of my tongue. Well to answer that question is that suspense is a type of writing. Suspense is when the creator or author hides something till the end. For example, take Harry Potter (the whole series). They never actually find out how to kill Voldemort until the end. However, the stories I think that has the most suspense is the Landlady and Tell-Tale Heart. The authors of these books are Edgar Allen Poe, who wrote Tell-Tale Heart, and Roald Dahl, who wrote Landlady. In both stories, there were different elements of suspense. For example, in Tell-Tale Heart there is a lot of tone, mood, and imagery
Poe was a literary master with the emotions of his readers. He could make a reader feel anything he wanted to with just a few sentences. Through the stories 'The Black Cat'; and 'The Tell-Tale Heart';, he takes the reader through the emotions of his characters using writing methods that draw the reader in. His use of sentence structure and writing style allows the reader to become intimate with the character. Poe knew how the get a reader deep into the story; he could make them believe as thought they went through the deeds with the character. It is how Poe accomplishes this feat that is very interesting topic.
The mood of a story is incredibly important, and Poe was no stranger to this fact. He often created sinister or even cryptic moods through the use of his language and descriptions. But perhaps most influential in the development of the mood of his stories was the point of view from which the story was told.
Edgar Allan Poe is the skilled author of The Fall of the House of Usher, a story that especially emphasizes mood and has the theme that fear is your worst enemy. He brings a feeling of mystery and eeriness to his readers by describing with colorful words the location and condition of the the House of Usher, the narrator’s thoughts, Usher’s strange disposition, and the peculiar circumstances under which the narrator decides to visit him. Poe’s use of mood follows the Gothic Romantic way of exploring the darker side of human nature.

Suspense is the feeling of uncertainty or excitement, in waiting for an outcome or decision. Edgar Allan Poe uses suspense in his story “Masque of the Red Death” by using objects and great descriptive detail. Poe’s story is about a prince that tries to escape from the inevitable. He tries to lock himself away from the ‘red death’ and has a masquerade ball that doesn’t end happily. Prince and all of his guests die inside or around the seventh apartment room. The seventh room is preceded by six colored rooms which are meant to symbolize either the stages of life, or the seven sins. Inside the last room there are black velvet tapestries that hang all over the ceiling and down the walls. The window panes are a deep blood red color which gives the room an unwelcoming atmosphere. On the western wall, there is a gigantic clock of a deep black wood. Inside it has a pendulum that swings back and forth with a dull monotonous clang. When the minute hand marks a new hour, there is a clear, loud, deep sound, which can be heard from far away. Although it can give off an eerie feeling, the great eb...
Poe creates a dark and tense atmosphere in the Pen and the Pendulum by starting the book out with the narrator receiving a death sentence from the court for an unknown crime. Poe uses a lot of suspense in this story. In the Fall of the House of Usher his atmosphere is gloomy and dark. By making the atmosphere like that, this creates imagery so vivid to the reader which helps lead to a sense of emotion while reading this story.
Edgar Allan Poe is regarded as an influential author to the genre of horror and gothic tales that suggest what is out there (Van Leer back cover). Poe is best known for his dark and gruesome images, centered on death in order to provide his readers a sense of terror within oneself by showcasing what one is capable of doing (Giammarco 5). These qualities are contributed in Poe’s short stories such as, ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’, ‘The Man of the Crowd’ and ‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’ as they all depict various characteristics of different individuals placed in society through the device of the narrator. Poe has faced many challenges in his life from an early age including loss, illness, a difficult upbringing and heavy gambling and drinking problems (Giammarco 4). Although, these tragic events helped Poe to become one of the most well known American Poets of the 19th century (Giammarco 6).
Edgar Allan Poe has a unique writing style that uses several different elements of literary structure. He uses intrigue vocabulary, repetition, and imagery to better capture the reader’s attention and place them in the story. Edgar Allan Poe’s style is dark, and his is mysterious style of writing appeals to emotion and drama. What might be Poe’s greatest fictitious stories are gothic tend to have the same recurring theme of either death, lost love, or both. His choice of word draws the reader in to engage them to understand the author’s message more clearly. Authors who have a vague short lexicon tend to not engage the reader as much.
The characters in The Tell-Tale Heart are complex, interesting, and elaborate. Although much is not known about them, they each have minor details that make them stand out. Whether it be the old man’s eye, or the narrators growing insanity.
