The prevalence of criminal activities in our society draws my attention. Every day, whether it is on TV or the radio, there is always some new crime being reported. Some of these crimes are understandable, if we take into account the offender upbringing and circumstance(s). Others are inconceivable, and allow no room for tolerance because of the criminal men’s era. We are witnessing various crimes that impel us to question ourselves as to what might be the main factor of human criminal behavior -- nature or nurture. It is a debate that researchers have been tackling for years. With so many extraneous factors that may have a hand in influencing a person propensity towards certain things, it is sometimes hard to tell what is genetic and what has been shaped by the environment. It is the systems of knowledge shared by a relatively large group of people. Culture traditions vary from one society to the next. For this reason, people’s behavior and knowledge about what is and what is not is usually on par with their cultural background. Therefore, in order for me to ascertain if there is a correlation between culture and crime, the teenagers need to be the quintessential of their culture.
Hypotheses
If culture is the determinant of criminal behavior, at least one of these would be true:
1. Religious kids who migrates to a specific cultural surrounding start to commit crime at a higher rate.
2. Teenagers who come from affluent families commit aggravated assault at the same rate as the low income teenagers.
3. 13-year-old female teenagers commit robbery twice as much as the males.
4. 10-year-old and 17-year-old are committing murder at the same rate.
