Reflecting on President Obama's Historic Legacy

Emily Trippeer September 26, 2017 Dr. Becker English 111 The Legacy of President Obama. When looking back at the legacy of the Presidents, how can you tell what they will be remembered the most for? Especially when most people can’t agree on it. Or if most people don’t even like the President at the time. President Obama did several things during both terms of his Presidency. One of the first things were becoming the first African American President in the United States history in 2008. But a few things that he did while the President were pretty amazing even if other people say that what he did weren’t “amazing” things or if they didn’t agree with his choices. During his presidency, he did many things like, healthcare. Healthcare is a very important thing for many Americans. He made a statement “… It will provide more security and stability to those who have health insurance. It will provide insurance for those who don’t. And it will slow the growth of healthcare costs for our families, our businesses, and our government.” -President Obama addressing the Joint Session of Congress in 2009. In 2010 Obama created the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) on March 2010, by doing this it increased the coverage of healthcare insurance for many Americans. The next thing Obama covered was drugs and crime. “… African- Americans and whites, for the same crime, are arrested at very different rates, are convicted at very different rates, and receive very different sentences… That’s a substantive issue and it has to do with how we pursue racial justice.” -Senator Obama, 2008. Something he really wanted to eliminate was racial profiling and drugs especially cocaine. Obama passed the Fair Sentencing Act in 2010 it eliminated a five-year mandatory sentence for the first-time cocaine …show more content…

All he really wanted in the United States and around the world was peace, and for a clean Earth. He wanted to make this a better place. When there was something wrong like a natural disaster, for example, he and Michelle would be talking about what they could be doing to help those people and would personally go help people. Nothing would be better when President Obama would be at an event and start singing or cracking jokes with the crowd to lighten the mood or to make everybody’s days. During the two terms, he was an amazing president and did so much more than what I have written in this paper. I am glad that there was so many young people and kids that looked up to him. They wanted to pursue their dreams just like he did and I think that’s really amazing to have so many young people in America wanting to be like you. Knowing that if they really try and put everything into something it can turn out to be something big and amazing. Watching President Obama change over the years, during his terms, is heartbreaking. Having so many people watching every move that you’re making is stressful. But he did an amazing job of not showing if he was worried about something, or if he was really tired. He kept everything “under control” and didn’t let everybody see that side of
