On March 31, 2016 I finally made time to attend one of the Leadership Development presentation put on by SOLD. At first I was not really crazy about having this requirement included in this class so I allowed everything else I was doing to help me delay accomplishing this part of the class. Once I decided that I really had no choice but to finally make time in order to accomplish this, I was actually pleasantly surprised at how much I actually enjoyed the presentation. It was not a presentation as I had imagined, sitting there watching a PowerPoint or listening to someone lecture about the values, traits, or skills you need in order to be a leader. (Between my work and schooling, I have had plenty of these types of presentations.) Instead I found two gentlemen that not only provided the room with information but two gentlemen that got the room involved in the information. …show more content…
Even though this student studied, did the homework, and even asked questions, she was unable to accomplish passing grades. Each time the student did not due well on a test; the feelings of anxiety and dread at taking another test stressed her out. One of the statements made was about how this actually can play a part in how a person actually does on a test. If a person has failed or not done very well on previous tests, their thoughts of failure can actually play a part in them not doing well on the nest test. I believe it was Mike who made the statement, “you’re choosing to not think correctly”.

In relating the interview to the text I found remarkable similarities. The talk of change, empowerment, organization decision making, autonomy, Magnet, authority, over all leadership practice, and its importance were all covered during the interview process. Although intimidated by this project at first I found it very insightful and valuable. It was interesting to obtain a perspective of these various topics from an upper level administrator within the institution. Furthermore this exercise has made me think more about my personal leadership style. It has allowed me to identify my strengths and weakness in which I must focus on to become a more effective and desirable leader with in the organization.

My first lessons on leadership were taken during my childhood days. I grew up observing my best friend’s mother effortlessly multi task her role of a CEO, a wife, a daughter-in-law and a mother - with a smile that ceased to leave her face and a personality that earned respect. Here he proved to be exceptional. He stood out. One of the first things that you notice is that TJ is an active listener and questioner. He listens, internalizes and is not timid about asking questions. At that first conference I watched him internalize each lesson, then put it into practice. Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Leadership is found not just at work but all around us. In any situation, leaders take a step forward and take charge of the situation. It can be at home, at work or at any other place. Leaders are never born, they become leaders because they have the credibility and people would love to follow them.
Leaders require essential leadership skills to effectively lead. The Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Academy teaches those essential skills to enhance leadership ability out in the fleet. During my time at the CPO Academy, I acquired vital knowledge and skills in leadership throughout the classes I took which I will be taking back to the unit. One class that had a significant impact was the Facilitative Leadership class which gave me the tools to effectively run a meeting. In addition, the Change Management class provided me with the skills necessary to support Command Policy and get crew buy-in. Lastly, the Stress Management class imparted me with knowledge on how to deal with stress and mitigate it.

Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power.
