‘Making laws for Clouds’ by author Nick Earls deals with the journey of an 18 year old boy who struggles to cope with the stresses of sexual desire, supporting his family and taking responsibility for his actions. The town in which he lives has strong religious ideals, so when he ‘weakens’ to the temptations of pre-marital sex he is socially outcast until the town either forgives of forgets his sin. Kane’s mother plays the antagonist when it comes to views on his relationship, she has a firm belief from her pervious experiences that the relationship cant work, she has been in the situation Kane is in and cant seem to believe that not all relationships will end the way that hers did, which was in divorce.
Pre-marital sex is the main conflict in ‘Making laws for Clouds’, it involves the whole community as they deal with the crisis put upon them by two young members, Kane and Tanika, who gave in to ‘lust’ at the back of the local church bus. The community deals with it in a rather ‘sweep under the rug’ fashion with everybody knowing what happened but nobody talking about it. Father Steel is the one who comes across the pair and the one who mainly deals with it in the confines of the church. Father Steel doesn’t tell anyone about what happened but every one gathers for themselves what events took place. Harbros boat catching fire and the pre-marital sex aren’t related in the book but when the issues meet it leads to a friendly relationship between Kane and Tanika and Harbo. Harbo becomes a key character in the development in their relationship. Mr. Bell is an antagonist to Harbo, he works against the couple because he doesn’t like the idea of pre-marital sex because he has high religious beliefs. Yet another character is against the pair because Kane’s mother is against them. Each of the characters has a unique point of view on the situation that Kane and Tanika find them selves in.
Kane and Tanika both know that this is a serious situation and they know that they could get into trouble but like all teenagers they think that they are different. They believe that because they love each other it will be alright, the church doesn’t agree with pre-marital sex which is why they find themselves in so much trouble. Harbo seems to be the only one the young couple’s side, he has a few discussions with Kane and Tanika during the novel, sharing his thoughts, ideas, life experiences and beliefs upon them.

For centuries, society has placed a remarkably large emphasis on protecting the young from the many perceived errors of growing up. Effective sex education is resisted in many locations across the country in favor of somewhat comical biblical suggestions for abstinence until marriage even while the majority of those targeted teens are viewing the world as a more and more sexual place. So many views are weaving in and out of teenagers' newly formed adolescent minds that any effective argument for responsible attitudes or analysis of sexual behavior in teens should be expressed with a certain minimal degree of clarity. Unfortunately, this essential lucidity of advice is missing in the short story “Where are You Going, Where Have You Been,” in which the misguided Joyce Carol Oates creates the character of Arthur Friend as a cliché personification of the inner demon of uncontrollably budding sexuality. Instead, the murky characterization of the antagonist presents nothing more than a confused and ambiguous view of the meaning of the story.
As the world grows, society is constantly changing people and their beliefs become more accustomed to what was unfamiliar in the past. There were times when old opinions and views clashed with the new, even amongst loved ones. In “Say Yes” by Tobias Wolff, two different views on marriage come to light between husband and wife during a usually insignificant evening at home. Aside from the subject of the argument, the husband’s perspective on his treatment towards his wife portray what their society’s expectations of a man and woman roles were. The contrast between this married couple depicts a few of many controversial issues society has had to approach and eventually “Say Yes” to. Once the wife realized how little her husband knew about her, she slowly creates a distance between them and she doesn 't cooperate with him like he wants and expects her to do.
In this story there are relationships of all kinds and many of them. Each couple has their own unique story and thoughts on how a marriage should occur. There are five major relationships in this story each with their own goals and views. Some chose to marry for the reasons of wealth or social status while others search for the love of another. No matter the reasons situations have brought these couples together and their differing opinions separate them apart. Though in the end no matter the reason each seeks for their own form of happyness.
Consent is known as the permission, or approval of a certain action. A current debate in today’s society is about consent during sexual relations. This is a very controversial subject due to the fact that there are so many different scenarios that come into play when you are talking about consent between parties. When discussing consent, there are many different topics that come into play depending on who you are talking to. In my opinion, one of the most important things that come into play when discussing this topic is respecting who you are with.
The main points of the Symbolic Interactionism perspective is that symbols are what shape how we communicate and how we view the world. Our changing ideas affect how we understand and view different things around us. Without symbols society would be not be very coordinated, people wouldn’t be able to specify a specific time for school or where to meet for lunch. The main points of the Functional Analysis perspective, is that society is made up of several individual parts that work together for society to function properly. Each of these smaller parts has functions that are beneficial consequences of people actions and dysfunctions that are harmful and threaten the equilibrium. In this perspective the smaller parts are look at to see how they
The short story “The Storm” by Kate Chopin, deals with the subject of adultery. The story takes place in the early 1900’s. There are two main characters, Calixta (the wife) and Alcee (the former lover). Alcee must take refuge from a passing storm in Calixta’s house, while he is there the two end up making love while Calixta’s husband and son have to wait out the storm at the local store. By doing this Chopin implies the theme that is, adultery is natural and does not necessarily have negative consequences. Through out the story the constant changing of imagery plays a great role in the development of characters and their ability to demonstrate the theme.
A famous poet Gregory Corso’s poem talks about how “Marriage” is a beautiful. The author is the main character and he is thinking about his future and the possibility of him getting married. He is trying to deeply think about all the possible scenarios he might face, he tries to think about the right decision to take in regard of him getting married or not getting married. So he takes a scientific approach to the dilemma, he first lays out all the possible options he has, and then he simulates every decision in his mind and tries to realize its consequences.
7). That is evident to the financial ability of Danny family. In addition, they did not have any experience in caring a baby. To the end, nevertheless, they still agreed to receive the baby as a gift with all their best wishes and expectation, while they “knew how many challenges gay couples usually faced when they want to adopt” (Peter, We Found Our Son in the Subway). It is not a reckless decision, it is the symbol of human compassion. Despite the fact that they do not have skin realation, they extremely love each other. Secondly, it is clearly that the viewpoint of society has been a factor in acting of them. Let’s imgae that what happened to Danny family if everybody has known Dan is a homosexual and the judge does not allow they to adopt Kevin and they can live together happily. At the time, most of people do not have an agreeable point to the gay lovers, the adopting a child of gay person is not easy. How they could overcome an obstacle easily without the misery. In today’s society, the notion and belief of growing old, getting married, having kids, and a maintaining of a happy family, seems to be a common value among most people. In Kevin Brockmeier’s short story, “The Ceiling,” Brockmeier implies that marriage is not necessary in our society. In fact, Brockmeier criticizes the belief of marriage in his literary work. Brockmeier reveals that marriage usually leads to or ends in disaster, specifically, all marriages are doomed to fail from the start. Throughout the story, the male protagonist, the husband, becomes more and more separated from his wife. As the tension increases between the protagonist and his wife, Brockmeier symbolizes a failing marriage between the husband and wife as he depicts the ceiling in the sky closing upon the town in which they live, and eventually crushing the town entirely as a whole.
The Marriage Act 1961 is a law made by the Australian Parliament that sets out the strict legal requirements and rules for a valid marriage. Prior to 2004 there was no formal definition of marriage in the Marriage Act 1961 however the Act was amended in 2004 to formally define marriage as ‘the union of a man and woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.’ There are three legal requirements that stem from this definition. The first is that a marriage must be heterosexual, that is, it must be between a man and woman. Same-sex couples may participate in a commitment ceremony or same-sex couples may also get married overseas if the marriage meets the legal requirements of that country however these marriages are not recognised by Australian law. The second legal requirement that stems from the definition of marriage is that a marriage must be monogamous meaning a

“The Love of My Life,” by T. Coraghessan Boyle tells the story of a couple in college who end up having a baby that they throw away out of fear (Boyle, 563). This story starts with how in love China and Jeremy were which soon takes a turn for the worst. China and Jeremy are madly in love but as they attend separate colleges they become distant, especially when China becomes pregnant (Boyle, 563). Jeremy in a panic does what a mostly unresponsive China requests of him, get rid of “it”(Boyle, 563). Learning of the horrifying crime that Jeremy and China committed leaves readers wondering one thing. What made these young adults think what they did was reasonable? Although there are no true answers one can provide, there are multiple reasons: influential hold of the media, expectations of society, and the internal conflict of right and wrong.
