Wind is caused by the uneven heating of the sun, and has been an energy source for a while now. So basically if the sun shines and still exists, wind will always exist as well, whether it is on planet Neptune or here on Earth. It is a renewable energy resource, meaning that it will always be here on Earth, so it doesn’t run out. This gives it a great advantage over fossil fuels, not to mention that fossil fuels harm the Earth in several ways.
A lot of the wind energy today derives from turbines. We use wind power and wind turbines to harness electricity for us to use. The way that we get electricity through wind power is that when the wind blows by, the blades in the turbines turn, which then turn a shaft that is connected to a special generator, which then creates electricity. This is a great example of how some wind turbines are designed specifically to create electricity. There size also helps their purpose, with some being up to 200 feet tall!
Wind turbines used to create the electricity needed turn the kinetic energy from the wind into mechanical power, which is where the name “Wind Power” comes from. In nuclear power, you have nuclear power-plants, sort of how in wind power you have wind turbines. Well these nuclear power-plants work through a process called nuclear fission. In nuclear fission, an atoms nucleus is split into 2 nuclei. In turn, heat is released. So the heat produced in nuclear power-plants is released from fission reactions. This heat is used to turn water into steam. This steam then turns and spins the blades of a turbine to generate electricity. This is how electricity is produced through nuclear power!
But as good as nuclear power sounds, in the end it still has some risks. It has its pro’s and con’s. An accident in a nuclear power-plant can be incredibly deadly and dangerous, and a safe way to store radioactive waste for thousands of years still needs to be found.
It uses flowing water to generate electricity. It does this by using dams and reservoirs for storage. This method gives us the most electricity rather than any other renewable energy source. Not only do the dams and reservoirs create electricity, they also control flooding (Sambu). Hydropower is the least expensive procedure to generate electricity. There is physics involved in these wind turbines as they change wind into mechanical energy and then into electricity. The energy produced depends on the volume of the air, the density, and the wind speed. The mass per unit time is the mass times the density times the wind speed or m = mass, p = density, A = area, and v = wind speed; m = pAV. Because the function of the wind turbine is to transform the wind’s kinetic energy into electricity the equation for kinetic energy is needed; KE = ½ mv2 or kinetic energy equals one half the mass times the velocity squared. Then, using substitution, the power in the wind depends on the density of the air, area swept out by rotors, and the cube of the velocity or ½ pAV3. Using Betz’ law the theoretical energy model for extracting 59% of the energy is power = 16/27(½ pAV3) .

Through fission the power plants are able to create electricity through the two types of nuclear reactors, the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWRs) and the Boiling Water Reactor (BWRs). Most states have nuclear power plants now and produce 20% of the nation’s power; around 3 million Americans live within 10 miles of an operating nuclear power plant (Nuclear power plants, n.d.para.1). It does have pros and cons to it but in the end it does create 20% of the nation’s power and the percent is growing.
Nuclear power has proven before that it can result in tragedy, both seen in the accident in Chernobyl and Fukushima. However, in places such as France and even the University of Maryland, we can see the many advantages that nuclear energy can bring forth, and for different purposes. In both research and energy production, nuclear energy has proven that it can not only improve our health and the economy, but also emit less harmful gases on the environment than fossil fuels. A wind turbine is basically a very large inverse fan, where wind is the input and electricity is the output. Today there are hundreds of different wind turbine deigns, most of them range from around 40 – 80m in height; 50 – 85m in span and 850kW to 4.5MW in power.
