Atomic Energy is Nuclear energy and it can be produced in large quantities. As of 2012, the average of nuclear power plants in the United States generated about 11.8 billion kilowatt-hours, that’s 19% of the nation’s electricity. (2013) Neither solar nor wind power can generate electricity on anything approaching the scale of fossil fuels or nuclear power. (Behrens, 513) Uranium rods sit in a core reactor for five years and in the five years they have made six times their weight into energy. (Tucker, 500) Although Atomic energy is plentiful it’s harmful to our planet. The waste produced from nuclear power plants, uranium fuel, is a highly radioactive substance that can take hundreds of thousands of years to decay and become harmless. Today, there are no facilities for permanent disposal of the spent fuel and it is being stored in large water-cooled pools and dry storage casks at nuclear power plants.
