Poverty has been a growing problem in America, and it most likely will never stop being one. Someone who is identified as being in poverty lives beneath the poverty line determined by the Federal government. The poverty line in 2015 for a family of four was $24,250. These are the people who are really considered poor. Poverty isn’t just a problem in the United States; in fact, other countries struggle just as much, if not more, than the United States does. Many people struggle to keep themselves above the government’s poverty line, shown by the fact that the percent of poor people in America hasn’t drastically changed over the years. However, it is possible to get out of, and ultimately stay out of, poverty.
People always say how they are so poor, but do they really know the meaning of being poor. People who live under the poverty line are the ones considered poor by the government. There are many people who suffer being in poverty. The Census Bureau’s articles says, “In 2014, the official poverty rate was 14.8 percent. There were 46.7 million in poverty,” (“2014 Highlights”). The percentage might not seem like a lot, but those are just the ones below the poverty line. There are many people who suffer who are just above the line or going back and forth. Another 1.9 billion people live just above it and struggle to make ends meet. (Lusted) Some even live in extreme poverty. Extreme poverty is those who can’t even have water, food, housing, and clothing. (Lusted) As for anyone in poverty though, it decreases their lifespan as these people don’t have the money for proper healthcare and nutrition. Poverty is a struggle all around the world and thousands of people die each day due to the lack of basic necessities to live.
Poverty is a complex and growing problem in the United States. As of right now there is no solution. There are proposals and acts, such as Obama Care, that were enacted in an attempt to help people in poverty, and there are so many organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity and The Hunger Project, that try to aid people when they start to lack the necessities, like food and shelter. College students are graduating college with a large amount of student loans and no way of paying them off, people are being evicted from their homes, and employees are being laid off. The unemployment rate in the United States in 2015 was five percent, that’s about fifteen million people. It’s becoming difficult for people to find jobs, therefore making it hard for people to get back on their feet and start living a comfortable lifestyle. Poverty in the
Poverty is a potential outcome for everyone. It’s sneaky and many people fall victim to it every year. No one believes that they have the potential to fall into debt, but it can happen through a string of bad luck, time running short, and other possibilities that can’t be controlled. People who are struggling with difficulty believe that there is no way out because no one will help them. However, there are ways for us, as a society, to help those who are short on income receive the help that they need. Many of the impoverished are thought to be slackers, addicts, or self-destructive to their lives. Society can help each other by dismembering the stereotypes given to people who are underneath the “Poverty Line” that they used as wedges between the classes. Labels given to those who’re poor have nothing to do with who they are as humans.
Surviving in a world where money matters is not easy at all. Try living on less than a dollar and fifty cents a day. Go into a store and look for food enough for three meals that has enough nutrients for a balance diet all under a budget of $1.50. Fresh fruit and vegetables along with meat are out of the question, then what are the options? There really are none except a few canned and dried goods. There are people who live on this on a daily basis. The amount of people who live in poverty are over 1.4 billion and increasing daily. Society has not focused enough on social justice for those in poverty. “The working poor harvest sweet potatoes in time for Thanksgiving. They cut trees in time for Christmas. The fruit of their labor are in our lives every day, yet we rarely see them. Even when we encounter them face-to-face stocking shelves in Wal-Mart or checking us out at the supermarket, we do not see them as whole people, and we surely do not see them as poor. They are hidden in plain sight” (Edwards). People work minimum wage and receive barely enough assistance from the government to help support them. These people work and continue to work to make enough to survive one day at a time. The opportunities for those of low class compared to those in middle or higher levels of class do not match. These classes all receive different benefits, but more importantly those in poverty impact society as a whole.
What does it mean for someone to be on the lines of poverty or living in poverty? What is this word that is falsely used and missed analyzed? Poverty is the state of being extremely poor or being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount. In 2010, 16.4 million children, or 22.0 percent, were poor in the United States alone. (Tanner, 2014) The poverty rate for children also varies substantially by race and origin. If the rate of poverty continues to rise, will there be any hope left in humanity? The real question is not what is poverty but why is there so many people living in it. The ideal job of the government (federal and state) is to create a better/safer environment for the people. The model the “government” campaign is that everything they do is for the “benefit” of the people. When does the word “benefit” come into play when twenty-two percent of the population cannot supply a place for their children to sleep, put food on the table, and get a job that pays well enough to support their family. Are there any real benefits knowing families living in poverty have only one percent of a chance of getting out? Who is to blame? Where and how did this problem all start? What is this so called “government” doing to help stop the increasing rate of poverty? As you read this essay, it will explain what it means to be truly poor and why the government does so little to help. Include real stories from people living in poverty, what the government is doing to help (and if it’s enough), and is the problem of poverty becoming worst or slowly rising to become better.

Poverty is an issue that impacts people all over the world, even in our own backyard of Greeley Colorado. We can see the effects of poverty effecting people. Poverty is explained by the Webster dictionary as the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions, or in the other words the state of being poor. Many people correlate the definition of poverty to being an international issue that affects people in country’s that are not rich in greater resources or are lacking the development in becoming a wealthier nation.
How can there be so much misery and insecurity in the midst of such abundance? One of the first things we see is that poverty doesn’t exist all by itself. It is simply one end of an overall distribution of income and wealth in society as a whole. Poverty is both a structural aspect of the system and consequence of how the system is organized and how people participate in it.
One- third of the world’s population today is living in poverty. Poverty is something that many people face, and it’s not just an issue that we see in the America, but all around the world. People all around us are suffering from this issue, and there’s so many steps that can be done to improve this issue. He says that the United States is considered one of the wealthiest country in the world and has more billionaires than any other countries. However, the United States has families who have low income and low resources to afford the basic necessities such as, decent housing, food or health care. They also cannot afford basic services like child care or doctors. He says that statistic shows that about 12% of Americans do not get enough or suffered other material hardships. In other words, 37 million people who live below the poverty line. 12 out of 37 million people are children who live with families with income below the minimum wage. More children live in poverty now than 25 or 30 years ago and the numbers are increasing. Some reasons behind poverty are, low education level, lack of jobs, high divorce rate or personal problems such as chronic illness, accidents or getting married at the early ages. For example, some people who get married at the age of 16 or 18 may end up having large children and some parents cannot take care of their children. I belong to a country which is facing many problems ranging from illiteracy, health/diseases/low life expectancy, Hunger, Housing to violence, high crime rate and most importantly terrorism. After experiencing many types of misfortunes/events like robbery and witnessing major events like a terrorist attack, I was propelled to study the core issue behind this… so by looking at the people with problems of health/homelessness/education and as far as listening to many interviews of people such as captured terrorists, robbers and criminals. By listening to their reasons/explanations behind this, I came to the conclusion that the major driving force behind all these issues is poverty which is mostly ignored by the society.
