Reflection About Poverty

My encounters with poverty have been few and far between, although the less fortunate have always been on my mind. Especially, since I moved closer to Washington D.C. Mostly because I have found poverty to be much more visible in more populated areas. At every stoplight men and women are asking for help, while thousands of people in hundreds of cars drive by, unsure of how to assist. Poverty has many levels, some more pressing and worrying than others. Families living primarily on food stamps, couples barely surviving paycheck to paycheck, and finally, the most obvious to the naked eye, those without homes. While researching human trafficking last year, I learned quite a bit about prostitution, and the lengths a person will go to survive. The underprivileged in American society live differently from that of most countries, as we do have rather good resources in most respects. However, because of the many possibilities in our country, there are good and bad opportunities that are available to our poor. When every other possible route is closed, I believe a person will do anything they can to survive and prostitution is the only option for some.When backed into a corner a person will choose to live even though the circumstances are terrible. Poverty is different in America, however, it can still be a horrific way to live. A person should never have to live the way many do in America. Barely surviving, hardly enjoy living because of a constant state of fear of losing everything. I bring up prostitution because it is one of the known professions for a person in need of making money quickly. More opportunities must be made available to the underprivileged if they are ever to make it out of this cycle of poverty. There are many programs that are designed to give people better job training and better living situations, as to help them find a brighter future, however America still needs more of these programs.
