Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after you have been through a trauma. A trauma is a shocking and scary event that you can see or that happens to you. During this type of event, you think that your life or others’ lives are in danger. You may feel afraid or feel as if you have no control over what is happening. This kind of disorder can affect people in cases such as: combat exposure, child sexual or physical abuse, terrorist attack, sexual or physical assault, serious accidents, like a car crash, or disasters, like a fire, tornado, or hurricane. However, not everyone develops PTSD after a traumatic experience. In most cases, if your reactions don’t go away over time, you may have PTSD. Some people who go through a trauma only have symptoms at the beginning then eventually go away while others’ can stick with them for a long period of time. Whether or not you get PTSD can vary depending on how intense the trauma was or how long it lasted, if you were harmed or lost someone close to you, how close you were to the event, if you received help or not after the event, your control over what occurred, or how strong your reaction was. Some people try to push the event in the back of their mind because they feel they’ll be okay when in reality, it affects them in the long run.
In most cases, PTSD symptoms develop soon after the trauma while in others’, it may not appear for months or years later. They also might not appear if just reminded of the trauma. They can come and go over the period of many years, but if they last longer than four weeks, cause you great distress, or interfere with daily activities, you may have PTSD. Instead of sharing feelings with others, many may choose to keep them bottled up inside. However, treatment such as psychotherapy, medication or even a combination of the two can keep stability. Psychotherapy requires that you meet with a therapist. In this case, you would need Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) or a Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy. During CPT, you learn skills with your therapist to understand how the trauma changed your thoughts and feelings. PE therapy is when you repeatedly talk about the traumatizing event until the memories are no longer upsetting to the individual. The person also is taken to places that are safe, but they’ve been straying away from since the trauma.
