There are positive and negative things about my parents marriage just like every marriage has. Some positive thing about their marriage are; they are very hard working people, they do their best to make our lives easier and fun, and they do whatever it takes for us to do what we want to do. The negatives about it are they fight so much that it affects our whole family greatly, they never like to go to hang out with each others families, and they are always stressed which stresses the rest of us out. My dad drinks every night which scares me because that is not healthy physically and mentally. I would pray about it every day and would think about it in the shower to get closer to god. In the Brashaw book, Bradshaw would be all for calling out to god and being close to him because he states on step that is spiritual awakening which is, “ We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with god as we understand him, praying only for knowledge of his will for us and the power to carry that out” (Bradshaw 94). I learned that I was following after my dad because I would treat my girlfriend the way he treats my mom sometimes which is not okay all and I stopped and thought about how I was acting and I learned to change because that is not who I am inside. I was so affected by him being an alcoholic that I have anxiety attacks at night and always hear my dad and mom yelling in my head and I start to panic. I know my family was affected too and Bradshaw would agree because he states, “ Dysfunctional families are primarily created by high levels of anxiety due to some form of stress. Our ability to deal with stress is a mark of our maturity level, which is partly measured by our ability to cope with the stressor effectively
As well as the long last effect that alcoholic parents have on a child and a loved one. Moreover, McCullers writes his story incorporating the reality of alcoholism to allow people to visualize the effect of addiction and how it a very serious life changing issue that can deteriorate and break apart families. Mucllurs also indirectly emphasizes the sacrifices that parents must do to ensure the happiness and wellbeing of their children and how being disconnected from your social circle can lead to very serious mentally draining issues. As well as how he emphasizes Martins own intentions and how Matin suffers his own dilemma throughout the story for specific
Research of literature depends on the theory or topic one is researching. Research uncovers what the author knows about his or her discipline and its practices. Augustus Napier is a family therapist with vast experience in family therapeutic processes and experiential therapy with couples. In my research of his background, I reviewed his book “The Family Crucible.” In this text, Dr. Napier chronicles the therapeutic process of one fictitious family (which is a composite of real cases) experiencing marital discord. In reviewing the case studies in this book, I gained insight into his style of the therapeutic process, which exposed Dr. Napier’s framework which leads to his assumptions about marriage. The details of this case study coupled with Dr. Napier’s added paragraphs and chapters of analyses with his conclusions on the maladaptive reasons people marry other people make this resource of great qualitative value. Additionally, useful evaluative data revealing a deeper insight into Dr. Napier’s position on irreconcilable differences can be fo...
As discussed before neither of the fiction couples had it. As for the real relationships, it’s a different story. There is somewhat a little emotional support between my parents. They have been marriage for thirty years. Faced plenty of bumps in the road. Their relationship is more than just leaving together though but it’s not a couple on either. They are more like friends that support each other. The loving connection no longer there only when it comes to a kiss goodnight before bed. Even if they actually listen to each other and are compassionate about the struggles each other are going through. They never saw to agree with their opinion on how to fix it. From my perspective, they have the ‘50s style marriage. Were you must agree with what the husband’s views are, the wife is the housekeeper, the husband to quote brings home the bacon and does the yard work. Thus making the emotional support rather one-sided my mom supports and is there for my father but he isn’t there for her. Emotional support is a two-way street, not one way. But when I look at my brother’s relationship with his fiancé Sarah they do share emotional support for each other. Somehow a couple that is only been together for about fours years has more support for each other than a couple that has been together for thirty years makes no sense. Part of me wonders if it due to the fact they are still getting to now reaching
One in five adults can identify with growing up with an alcoholic relative and Twenty-eight million Americans have one parent abusing or dependent on alcoholic (Walker, & Lee, 1998). There are devastating and ubiquitous effects of alcoholism, which vary from psychological, social, or biological problems for families. Counselor’s treating this problem all agree that the relationships within a family, especially between a parent and a child is one of the most influential within a system, but what are the effects on the family when a parent is an alcoholic? Contemporary research has found there is a higher prevalence of problems in the family when alcohol is the organizing principle. In addition, there is copious research on the roles of individuals within the family becoming defined into specific categories, and evidently, the roles may become reversed between the parent and the child. This topic of functional roles in alcoholic families will be analyzed and investigated further. Family therapy has had substantial results in the treatment of an alcoholic parent. These results will be discussed more along, with the literature examining the existing research related, to specific interventions and treatments in family therapy with an alcoholic parent. Before research on the treatment is illuminated on distinctive therapies, it is crucial for counselors facilitating family therapy to comprehend the literature on the presenting problems commonly, associated with alcoholic parents and the effects this population has on their families. Furthermore, the adverse outcomes an alcoholic parent has on their children and spouses has been researched and reviewed.
The 21st century has changed drastically since the 1900s. One of the many things that has changed is how big of an impact children have on marriages.Children can either bring a couple together, and realize how great life is. Or a child can show the significant other how they are complete opposites. In the past century, children have had a bigger impact of making or breaking a marriage.
The strongest and most influential person who modeled alcohol use in my childhood was a male relative. I was not completely aware of many of these impacts until adolescence. As a child, I did not know what alcoholism was, I just assumed that the Beefeater Gin stench coming from my relative was his cologne. However, as I grew older and was exposed to a greater variety of people and circumstances, I slowly became aware of alcoholism. I began to incorporate the new experiences I had in relation to alcohol use with a deeper understanding of my extended family. This new awareness was unsettling and painful to me. Many of my relatives were alcoholics. There was never a family brunch, dinner, or casual gathering that was not centered around alcohol. The excessive and consistent reliance on alcohol fueled the arguments and shouting matches I witnessed between my male relatives. Their arguments were always laden with racist, sexi...
As the result of being raised in a home where one or both parents were addicted, children of alcoholics generally have certain common characteristics that continue to affect them as adults. Members of a dysfunctional family tend to build up defenses to deal with the problems of the addicted family member. Common problems include lack of communication, mistrust, and low self-esteem. Adult children of alcoholics often become isolated, are afraid of authority figures, have difficulty distinguishing between normal and abnormal behavior, and judge themselves harshly. This often leads to enduring feelings of guilt and problems with intimate relationships. In many cases, adult children of alcoholics develop an over-developed sense of responsibility, and respond poorly to criticism. They may feel different from other people, fear failure but tend to sabotage success, and fall in love with people they can pity and rescue. Fortunately, there are a number of support groups designed to help adult children of alcoholics identify their problems, and start resolving them.
Family is the fundamental building block for all human civilizations. The institution of marriage is beneficial to the individual and society. The health of our culture is linked to the health and well-being of marriage. Unfortunately, the standard of lifelong, traditional marriage as the foundation of family life in our nation is under attack. The breakdown of a marriage not only effects the adults but the children as well. Much of the value mothers and fathers bring to their children is due to the fact that females and males are different. The cooperative relationship of male and female marriage blends their differences to provide a child with balance and understanding. There is more than 30 years of social science studies to support the
