How many of you have seen an advertisement lately promoting a product with a beautiful woman or handsome male? They 're all around us because advertisers know their consumers best. They know that we want to strive towards an ideal look other than our own, and in doing so they promote their products to us by using a beauty standard that is above what the average woman or man is. However, using this beauty standard has created many problems among our women and men in the backlash of it all. One rising problem is body dysmorphia that is linked to this rise in societies pressure over physical appearance. During my research on the standard beauty, I came across a documentary called the Illusionist. It talks a great deal about how the westernized beauty has traveled to all around the world, and how it 's affecting them. Ruchi Anand says in The Illusionists "Now what we 're seeing is a trend toward an imitation of the Westernized body image. These girls literally are fighting for the size zero, which was never known as beautiful in India." This is a reaction towards what women see as the beauty standard and their insecurities arise drastically. It was also noted in that same project that in Japan roughly 30% of women in their 20s are underweight. This is an alarming number of women who take another approach to get this ideal body. Having this standard beauty that 's above the norm has caused a lot of men and women to go into eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Also, to get that certain masculinity look, males have eased into taking steroids, or even weight loss pills, in order to gain this ideal quicker. Not only that, but males can even damage their bodies by going to the gym for too many hours, damaging their muscles in the process, in order to get the bodybuilder
