Contextual: The Divine Comedy was originally called only comedy by Dante. Reason for this is the thematic trajectory from sadness towards happiness (God and truth in this case), as well the vulgar language and popular style it was written, intended to be read by the common people rather than a minority. Written in terza rima, as a way to represent perfection, the poem is divided by three parts, namely Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. Each part is composed of 33 cantos for the exception of hell which comprises 34. The reason for this, Pr. Mazzota argues, is that the I canto represent a general preamble for the journey that Dante really undertakes from canto II. This journey constitutes the main plot of the book in which is narrate the adventure of Dante descending the nine circles of Hell, going through the mount of purgatory and ascending in the ethereal spheres of Heaven around the planet earth. Conclusion: In conclusion, my essay analyzed the transnationality and popularity of the Italian poem in this days, presenting the main causal factors. These characteristics at the same time, are consequences of the historical importance that Dante and his work represent for the mankind and, as Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes or Homer, he will probably keep its appealing for humanity for, at least, few more years ahead.
