Topic: Political Violence In this class on “political violence,” we studied Pakistan. Why should we pay special attention to Pakistan? Explain why Pamela Constable calls her book, “Playing with Fire.” Since independence, while India moved toward a constitutional democracy, Pakistan, despite its early promises, is spiraling out of control toward a slippery slope. What are some the fundamental problems that have contributed to her journey backward? Special attention is given to Pakistan as it has become the main hub or safe haven for all terrorist groups and the second reason being the procurement of nuclear weapons and rocket technology from North Korea. Shahid Javed Burki elaborates on the problems faced by Pakistan that drives the nation in a backward manner. Some of the problems include fiscal imbalance, poor monetary system, weak financial system, domestic savings on a low, increasing debt, low investment rate, rapidly diminishing infrastructure, high growth in population, weak government, poverty on the rise and a non confident legal system. These problems are elaborated as follows: The primary problem of Pakistan has been the fiscal imbalance. The government has no proper governance and regulations managing the fiscal budget. The budget deficits as a result are on the rise bringing down the economy of the nation as a whole. Overall as a result of poor fiscal management practices the debt has increased considerably decreasing the economic growth rate as a whole with government borrowing a lot of money. The next problem is the poor monetary management with interest rates and inflation rates soaring up high. Al Qaeda has been in media recently influencing and asking people to join the holy war against US. United States and their influences in the Muslim regions is the main target of Al Qaeda group and this war against US will continue until the last American moves out of the Middle East province and every Muslim region across the world was the press statement released by the Al Qaeda. The recent reports also reveal that the Al Qaeda groups are very active and live in the online presence and have changed their communication mode to a new level with the use of technology that is harder for US intelligence to monitor and decode their plans. Middle East has been the hub and growing place for Al Qaeda and as seen in the earlier times, Al Qaeda will again rise as a result of these supporting factors.

The pictures in the book bring the whole piece to perfection; they give a visual to what the author is writing. They are appealing to the text and fascinating to look at. This book includes a table of contents, an introduction, a conclusion, a timeline of events in Pakistan and Swat, a glossary, and acknowledgments.
Political violence is action taken to achieve political goals that may include armed revolution, civil strife, terrorism, war or other such activities that could result in injury, loss of property or loss of life. Political violence often occurs as a result of groups or individuals believing that the current political systems or anti-democratic leadership, often being dictatorial in nature, will not respond to their political ambitions or demands, nor accept their political objectives or recognize their grievances. Formally organized groups, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), businesses and collectives of individual citizens are non-state actors, that being that they are not locally, nationally or internationally recognized legitimate civilian or military authorities. The Cotonou Agreement of 2000 defines non-state actors as being those parties belonging to the private sector, economic and social partners and civil society in all its forms according to national characteristics. Historical observation shows that nation states with political institutions that are not capable of, or that are resistant to recognizing and addressing societies issues and grievances are more likely to see political violence manifest as a result of disparity amongst the population. This essay will examine why non-state political violence occurs including root and trigger causes by looking at the motivations that inspire groups and individuals to resort to non-conforming behaviors that manifest as occurrences of non-state political violence. Pakistani citizens have chosen to be part of a democratic government which puts forth the safety of its citizen first. Lahore has been “traditional capital of Punjab for a thousand years” and as being the cultural hub has acted as a magnet to the artists, craftsmen and performers. Lahore has stood against oppression by religious fanaticism and has been compared to London for being the hub of educational institutions and liberal arts and literature. But today the vigour of the city is slowly fading away. Thus it has become ever so important for planners to fight to regain the public realm and protect the future from negative impacts of fighting an internal threat.

One of the regional conflicts were India and Pakistan fighting for their independence. In 1947, India was released under Great Britain’s control and gained its independence. However, the country was divided between Muslims and Hindus, which share different religions. In the past ten years the Afghan Government has been dealing with a number of issues that have caused problems for the country, problems such as illegal drug trade, terrorism and violence. But nowadays they are fighting a problem that has long existed between people, and quite recently has taken a whole new aspect to it. Ethnic conflict is the destructive factor that has caused problems between people for generations, often leading to fights, outbreak of violence and grudge between different ethnicities.

Lawrence Auster wrote an eye-opening blog excerpt titled India and Pakistan: Why the Mass Killing Occurred. The content of this excerpt explore the fundamental issues of identity and religion that led to the violence in 1947. The author makes his point by utilizing current event such as the train massacre in 2002, in which 50 Hindu women and children were burned alive. The blog is for an audience with some prior knowledge on the topic and continues to expand upon that knowledge. The blog is a secondary source because it introduces its own unique ideas regarding the issue and was written after the time of the event. It was very helpful to my research because it simplifies the wordy information often found on scholarly sites and condenses it into something comprehensible and relatable to the reader.
