Do political cartoons effect the publics views on political issues? Political cartoons can bring light onto problems as well as affect people’s opinions on controversial issues. Just because the images are simplified does not mean that their effects are any less important. Their problems include the indecency of racial suffrage, the disparity in leadership, and the overshadowing of suffering. Political cartoons had a great effect on people in the past, because it showed the political views of the author in a simple, easy to understand way. Also portrayed is a black man being held up by his crutches, who has lost his leg in the war. The white men in leadership are supposed to be more trustworthy, but they are simply trying to become her favorite by giving her compliments. However, the black man is not trustworthy even though he gave everything that he had towards his cause, including his leg. Just because his skin is of a different color, his views and opinions are not to be trusted. This image shows how skewed public opinion can be, the man who fought for his county should be considered just as trustworthy as any white man. That the wealthy stay wealthy while the black man toils in the ground never getting any richer. Many of the matters portrayed, are still applicable today, although many of them in much smaller quantities. There is still have racial disparity to this day and it has been hundreds of years since the cartoons were published. Sadly, the United States still has work to do in order to completely eradicate any racial oppression. During the Civil War, there were people who were extremely prejudiced against the 54th regiment because the soldiers were all different colored skin and the people where used to the idea that different color skinned people worked as slaves. In “Glory,“ Colonel Montgomery, the Sargent that trained and prepared them for war, and the colonel that was in charge of distributing necessities, served as the people who discriminated the African American soldiers. When he was teaching the soldiers how to march, some of them couldn’t tell the difference between left and right. He acted as if all African Americans were uneducated and they were hopeless to teach. Shoes were an essential part of training. Many of the African American soldiers didn‘t even have decent shoes when they enrolled for the war. Naturally, after all the training, their shoes wore down. If the 54th regiment were composed of white soldiers, the department that passed out shoes would already have prepared extra shoes for them. But since the 54th regiment was composed of all African Americans, the regiment was discriminated and there were no extra shoes for them. The other white generals thought the 54th regiment would never go on a battlefield and even if they did, they probably would all die. Therefore there were no extra resources for them. Another fact that there were some racist sentiments was that the African American soldiers only got a $10 pay while the white soldiers got $13.
Political cartoons could be defined as illustrations or cartoon strips that contain a social and/or political message in them. Political cartoons are often based on the current events around when they were written.
Since the mid-nineteenth century, American newspapers have used political cartoons to provide a unique commentary on current events. From 1884 to 1912, Teddy Roosevelt was the subject of many of these cartoons. As his political career progressed, so did his portrayal in these drawings. These changes not only show the evolution of Roosevelt, but also of the Republican (and later the Bull Moose) party.
The United States was a country founded on the basis of freedom. Imagine living in a nation in which The First Amendment did not exist. Where there was not freedom of speech or press where censorship reigned with a king. This picture is that of France for the entirety of the nineteenth century. During this era, Honoré Daumier was a renowned political and social cartoonist. The King and his police persecuted the lithographer Daumier, among numerous other French artists, for his political activism, including jail time and heavy fines. Honoré Daumier was a master of political and social critique. Looking at an overview of his commentaries there appear strong parallels that can be drawn to current American politics. Daumier uses a range of stylistic choices to promote critiques that are multi-dimensional which contain various overt and more subtle satires, meanings, and messages. Learning from and referencing Daumier, I created a political cartoon that mimics his style.
Wallace Terry has collected a wide range of stories told by twenty black Vietnam veterans. The stories are varied based on each experience; from the horrific to the heart breaking and to the glorified image of Vietnam depicted by Hollywood. Wallace Terry does not insinuate his opinion into any of the stories so that the audience can feel as if they are having a conversation with the Vietnam Veteran himself. Terry introduces the purpose of the book by stating, “ Among the 20 men who portray their war and postwar experiences in this book. I sought a representative cross section of the black combat force.”(p. XV) Although the stories in this book were not told in any specific order, many themes became prominent throughout the novel such as religion, social, and health.
He portrays the racist tendency of people to assume black men are potentially violent and dangerous. He describes about a white woman’s reaction when she and him were walking on same street but on the opposite sides during the night. He says that women seemed to be worried, she felt uneasy and she thought that he was ‘menacingly close’. He even shares his experience on how he was taken as a burglar, mistaken as a killer and forced out of a jewelers store while doing assignment for a local paper. The reason behind being kicked out of the jeweler store and women running away was because he was a black man. During that period black men were stereotyped as rapist, murderer, and gang members. These names upon a person’s personality can hinder ones feelings and can also affect ones confidence level. As an example of the lessons learned from family members, Laurel tells the story of how her father requested that a group of Mennonites paint his porch. When asked by one of her troop members, “why… would someone pick a porch?” (51). Laurel quotes her father’s answer, “it was the only time he’d have a white man on his knees doing something for a black man for free” (51). This is telling of the overall perception of race relations that these girls have been indoctrinated with. These indirect lessons, while most likely not meant to be an education of frustration and hostility towards Caucasians, is the foundation for the events of ZZ Packers’ “Brownies”. “The Veteran” no longer wears his uniform and his rifle is leaned back against the chair once again. From now on, he wears crutches since his leg was amputated due to fighting in the war. His actions suggest that he is saluting which marks an end to his service. Also, the drum from the doorway which is shown in the other two paintings is now gone, which also conveys the end of military service since there is no longer a need to rally. In the description, it stated that the African American was returning to the office to receive his pension. It was very known that they received significantly less than White soldiers when it came to a pension. Cartoons date back many generations in time, and have been created for humoristic purposes for centuries. Mort Gerberg shaped cartoons and paved the way for many other cartoonists to rise to stardom. Gerberg was a professional cartoonist, whose works made appearances in The New Yorker, Playboy, Harvard Business Review, and The Huffington Post. Gerberg argues that cartoons cause the audience to think critically and analyze the rhetoric behind each work. He claims that cartoons are made of eight different things: cast, dialogue, caption, gesture, setting, cliché violation, composition, and cultural stereotype. Although all cartoons contain the previous characteristics, there are different types of cartoons as well. The most common form of a cartoon is a political/editorial cartoon followed up by comic strips, web comics, and cartoons in movies. When protesting certain things, people turn to humorous images called memes to gain traction on social media and to bring awareness about their cause. One of these humorous images was a picture of a popular TV cartoon, SpongeBob which was used to make fun at politicians at the March For Our Lives protest (@bynickdean). While this was meant to be lighthearted, it actually made people more aware about the social issues the march was creating because it was using a picture that many people recognized.
