When it comes to law enforcement, people often feel that police officers should be held to a higher standard and be a trusted member within the community. Officers are supposed to live their lives by a certain code, which includes moral ideals such as professionalism, accountability, integrity, trust, commitment, and service. After all, the power that an officer is entrusted with once they have completed their training is tremendous and should not be taken for granted. We give the officer the power to infringe on people’s rights and the ability to take a life away if reasonably necessary. There are not many professions that we award this type of discretion to and when it is violated, it affects the profession negatively as a whole. There …show more content…
Foster was a trusted officer who worked for Fresno PD almost 30 years and had been the Deputy Chief of police since 2007. According to LA Times, “Foster was arrested March 26, 2015 on charges that he conspired to distribute heroin, oxycodone and marijuana, according to a criminal complaint. The charges came after a year-long investigation” (Rocha and Hamilton). The article also stated that, “authorities say several people were involved in what a federal investigator labeled the “Foster drug-trafficking organization,” including two people believed to be related to the deputy chief: Iran Dennis Foster and Randy Flowers” (Rocha and Hamilton). There was an in depth investigation conducted by the F.B.I. and A.T.F. where they followed Foster during December 2014 as he drove his black BMW to a Rite Aid pharmacy drive-through and picked up a prescription for 100 oxycodone pills. He was later seen driving to the same pharmacy to pick up an identical order where he then dropped it off for distribution (Rocha and Hamilton). The problem in this situation is that Foster abused his position and conducted a drug trafficking enterprise under the nose of the Fresno PD and its

The chapter about police corruption and responses by Joycelyn Pollock focuses on misconduct in law enforcement agencies. Despite multiple cases of corruption being highlighted and broadcast in the media, most police officers are ethical and perform their job with honesty and integrity. It is the select few officers who engage in corruption that need to be addressed, so that unethical actions can be stopped and prevented. Police misconduct can occur in one of two ways, economic corruption or abuse

INTRODUCTION Three police officers were looking for a bombing suspect at Miss Mapp’s residence they asked her if they could search her house she refused to allow them. Miss Mapp said that they would need a search to enter her house so they left to go retrieve one. The three police officers returned three hours later with a paper that they said was a search warrant and forced their way into her house. During the search they found obscene materials that they could use to arrest her for having in her
Since 1829, police officers have been adverted to as peace keepers. However, as of now the reference has become invalid and they are only law enforcement officers. Many still do their jobs to Serve and Protect, while others are more worried about arresting innocent civilians for suspicious conduct. As submitted by Patricia Williams, “We must not tolerate a policy that makes walking down the street or pausing on a street corner or just sitting in a car an inherently suspicious activity.” It has become

Joe Velasquez National University CJA 356 Criminal Evidence Horton v. California Importantly, the case of Horton v. California is a United States Supreme Court case, which occurred in 1990. The use of force by police officers is under scrutiny from both individuals and other police officers. Many people wonder how much force law enforcement officers should use, and at what point does the use of force become excessive. The major research question within the studies provided is: What contributes to the use of excessive force? What causes police officers to go to the extreme when using force? Prostitution Should be Legalized I think that prostitution should be legalized because it is no different than any other service that we pay to receive. Besides, there are far more serious crimes that require the full attention of our police force than prostitution; therefore, policing it is a costly waste of time and police resources. Furthermore, prostitution is already legal in Singapore, Denmark, and a part of the United States as well. In this Essay, I will discuss these ideas; thereby

laws cannot and should not elevate anyone above the law — not ourselves, not the president of the country, and not the cop on the beat. Until a system exists that demands accountability…the credibility of our entire system of justice will exist under an ominous shadow of mistrust and doubt.” Not any person should be above the law especially those who are supposed to carry out the law because that type of power opens a pathway to corruption. Corruption is an issue throughout police forces and there
enforcement. To make the public, and the officers protecting them, feel protected, the implementation of new technology in the police force has occurred. Sometimes, this equipment backfires and ends up doing more harm than the good that it promised. When this occurs, a revaluation of what is going on should happen to make sure improvements are made. As shown by the recent privacy violations to the Round Lake Police Department regarding body-worn-cameras, officers need to become more familiar with the
Police corruption is defined as “an act or omission…characterized by a police officer’s misuses of the official position motivated in significant part by the achievement of personal gain.” Finding corruption in the police force is a difficult task for supervising officers. Police are believed to follow a basic rule among other police, known as the Blue Curtain. The Blue Curtain is a way of saying line officers will not inform supervising officers of immoral actions committed by another line officer
year 2015, 1,086 people have died in police related shootings in the U.S according to Vice News (2015). More and more minority deaths are occurring each year at the hands of law enforcement. Although the police swore to protect and serve, their disproportionate shootings of minorities indicate otherwise; which is why police officers need more cultural training, non-lethal force for apprehension training, and should be subject to harsher punishments for the officers with a history of excessive force
