Police Brutality is said to be a big issue here in the United States. But what is Police Brutality exactly? It is a civil rights violation that occurs when a police officer acts with excessive force by using an amount of force with regards to a civilian that is more than necessary. Excessive force by law enforcement officers is a violation of a person 's rights. Excessive force is not subject to a precise definition, but it is generally beyond the force a reasonable and prudent law enforcement officer would use under the circumstances ("Police Brutality Law & Legal Definition."). This can be physically, mentally and emotionally. Some police officers have abused their rights and authority to ferociously assault and manipulate citizens, even when they are innocent. This does not seem to be the case. The only reason a person believes this, is because media focuses more on the cases involving a white police officer and a black victim. While some officers might actually be racist, police brutality is not linked to racism. There may be a disproportionate number of police shootings against black people simply because the police disproportionately patrol black communities, not because of racism but the fact that black communities have a disproportionate amount of crime (Minkoff, Micheal). Why do we not hear about the man who shot a police officer? We never hear stories about cops being shot and killed or even injured, it is always about us citizens being hurt or killed. For example, have you heard about the case where an officer was killed in East Harlem? He was reporting to a gunshot call, as he was chasing the gunman, they turned on him and he was the one to get shot (Southall, Ashley, and J. David Goodman). How many of you could go to a call like this, knowing it could be your last day? Probably not many and that is why police officers deserve so much
