I believe it is true that police and prosecutors become conditioned to rely on scripted responses but there seems to be some differences for this. Prosecutors seem to be driven more by the ability to get a guilty verdict and police seem to be more concerned with seeing harm done and a worthy suspect who is deserving of arrest. Police work in a much different environment than prosecutors and must make quick decisions which they may not have all the facts. Stereotypes of the suspect may be more important such as the look and dress of the suspect. The prosecutor is less likely to take the look of the suspect in consideration since they will be looking through description of the suspect listed in a police report and other written documents. Mears et,. al (2008) focuses on the effect of social ecology as the causal mechanism for recidivism and how it affects certain groups differently.The importance of this research may help reduce rates of recidivism. The first hypothesis is those released from prison who are released into environments that are resource deprived or racially generated will be more likely to recidivate. The second hypothesis is that young non-white males will recidivism more compared to white males. They also predict the effect will be greater for drug and violent offending compared to property crimes. The last hypothesis is that age and race interaction will be moderated by social ecology, and those who live in higher levels of racial segregation, or resource deprivation.
The data used in this study included males who had been released from prisons in florida from the dates of january 1998 to june 2001, this included 49,420 samples. The researchers got the data from Department of Corrections Offender Based Information System which is reliable State held information.
