"Is it the nose one week, the ears the next, and the breast the following week?" This statement comes from Darrick Antell, MD, a New York plastic surgeon concerning the rise in teen plastic surgery. Should teenagers go through plastic surgery to achieve the ideal body image for society and themselves? My answer would be no because a teenagers body is still developing, there are also many risks involved, and society now has put immense pressure for teenagers to have a certain look for examples celebrities. Plastic surgery should not be something a teenager should be thinking about at a young age and this makes it controversial because more teenagers are doing surgery. The effects of an implant can include infection, scarring, hematomas and many other things. These effects occur during the first three years and another negative side effect is that implants usually last around 10 years which means the teens would need more surgery during their lifetime. When teens become women later in life it would be hard for them to do a mammogram since they have the implants inserted. The influence for teens to get plastic surgery comes from pop culture of today accepting plastic surgery from television shows and celebrity influence. Images on television portray the ideal image of how someone should look to be accepted as beautiful or pretty. An example lately in the news is Kylie Jenner from the show “Keeping up with the Kardashians” she is known for having fuller lips and other teens want the same look. “Many celebrities have had cosmetic surgery, and the American public is constantly exposed to images of these altered humans.” Teens need to realize that television and celebrities are not always real and it should not be the ideal image to look beautiful which can effect a …show more content…

Having a birth defect like a cleft lip can be encourage to get plastic surgery because it could affect the teen or child. A cleft lip is when a child’s lip or mouth doesn’t develop properly during pregnancy. Teens sometimes have trouble adapting to school because of constant bullying from their peers. The main issue for teens is being self-conscious when others point out their flaws and for some teens the solution is getting plastic surgery to cover the flaw and be fixed. An example of this would be the case of Nadia Ilse who at 14 wanted to get plastic surgery for an otoplasty which is the pinning of her ears. She was constantly bullied by her peers about her ears and after the surgery she felt more confident in her looks which in the end is good. “Vivian Diller, a psychologist and author of "Face It," questions whether plastic surgery is the right thing to do in bullying situations.” In some situations plastic surgery is not the answer when being bullied because sometimes it doesn’t solve the problem.
