Introduction to Event Planning
According the the International Institute of Event Management, the U.S. Department of Labor defines event planning as coordinating every detail of such events from the location to even specific details such as printed materials (2013).
There are four types of event categories; which are, celebrations, education, promotions, and commemorations. The following are examples of each category. The main type of events are celebrations which consist of, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, reunions, and fairs. Education events consist of conferences, conventions, meetings, and graduations. Promotion events consist of product launches, political rallies, and fashion shows. Finally, commemorations are events that include memorial and civic events (The Event).
Responsibilities of event planning include research, budgeting, making of a timeline, choosing event sites, obtaining permits for events, organizing the food and drink menus, figuring out transportation and accommodations, selecting a theme, arranging activities, selecting speakers and entertainers, and so on.
During the event, planners coordinate every detail of the event. Event planning as an industry has grown so much in the past 15 years, due to an economy boost and because of new trends in the corporate business. Planning an event may be stressful and time consuming for people who do not have the experience, by having an event planner handy, the event will go smoothly.
Academically Preparing for the Event Planning Industry
To become an event planner, there is no specific major or study requirement. However, business, art, or communication majors are some popular education paths for students who seek to pursue the career of event planning.

Event planning is very versatile, unlike many other professions, there is no need to go into a certain major or degree. To start off in the industry, all that is needed is various internships or even through volunteering for different events. By doing so, networking and recognition is seen through good work. Building an event planning business consists of various investments, a lot of money and time has to go into building any type of business to create a credible name in the industry. Then, the final step is to maintain this credibility and create networks with other industries. Event planning may seem like a simple process at a first look, but once it is broken down to the strategies and time spent on a single event, it may get overwhelming for people who are not used to the business. And this is why event planning is so crucial as an industry today.

Culture is an important aspect to the society we live in today. With the economy so hard to live in, it’s making it harder for the individuals to meet their needs. There are many cultures that are around the world that is different in many ways. One way that many cultures come together is through the cultural events today. Cultural events are events pertaining to cultures, such as a feast or festivals. By attending cultural events, you experience firsthand the diverse offering of culture and artistic expression found in a community. The Essence Music Festival and the Mardi Gras are two of the festivals that many people attend for all over the world.
The first of the two careers to be analysed is an event manager, sometimes also called event organisers or event planners. Prospects UK (2012) describes event managers as being the ones responsible for event production from its conception, right through to its completion. This can include the initial planning and organisation of the event, the development of a management plan to assist in the preparation (Gascoyne Development Commission, n.d.), and the coordination of all aspects of the event on the day its being held (Prospects UK 2012). This career was chosen as I feel like I would enjoy the creative aspects of planning my own unique, memorable and enjoyable events.

All these factors contribute to how well a company excels over its competitors in the market. Moreover, these attributes and qualities brings forth and bridge brand loyalty among its consumers and potential consumers looking for quality services and companies within the event planning business and causes many event planning businesses to stand out and reign supreme over others. From this information the company can determine the goals and start to outline the steps that need to be taken to ensure that the goal will be met. Other planning activities that should be completed are determining the company’s objectives and were they want to be in the future. This will help them to choose their business objectives and strategies. In addition, the company should look at the resources that they have available and determine if they are sufficient to achieve the organizations goals.
The first strength I would bring to the event planning industry is my ability to budget and manage money. With my personal finances, I am very strict about my spending habits, and I am constantly trying to find ways to save money. For example, I spent hours this past weekend researching the best deals on kitchen supplies for my house next fall. I made a spreadsheet of all of my options that fit the perfect balance between price and quality along with dozens of promo codes that could apply, and it quite literally paid off. My ability to organize and manage my own money as well as to save money would be beneficial in the event planning industry. After researching the impacts events have on regional development I have come to agree with the statement ‘The events industry is an effective and appropriate vehicle for facilitation of regional development’. The significance of this thesis is to critically discuss and demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the events industry and regional development while also providing an understanding of the history of events and the increasing significance of the event industry in contemporary society. Real life examples from around the world are used to recognize and justify the event industry as part of the tourism sector and explore specific implications to event management. Various sectors of the events industry are identified and discussed to support the theoretical discussion on how the events industry is an effective and appropriate vehicle for facilitation of regional development.

For example, Sports Authority has recently filed for bankruptcy, which is likely due to a lack of planning skills. With the addition of strategic and operational planning, the risk of going bankrupt could be significantly reduced. The many planning steps and strategies involved in these types of planning are what eventually produce the most success.
